Yes - I'm new to game jams!

How does your game fit the theme?
Just Get Started: It focuses on the need to actually start and do work, instead of pushing it off, very reminiscent of student life and pushing things off (and sometimes not being punished).

This game was very fun! Love games where you choose your own upgrades and choose what to upgrade, makes my runs feel personal and more strategic. I did find myself barely ever getting -%distractions as I never really got hit by them so I feel the upgrades could have some balancing. I did lose at the end of week 2 though (addition is really stressful okay ;-;) but for what I played it was fun. I could see this being very cool with more upgrades and like different behaviors of some distractions to add more to the unpredictability but for it being made in 9 days and your first game jam game, you did a great job!

Haha, this is a really fun game honestly, I wish I had played it during the rating period so that I could have given you the 5/5 ratings it deserved.

My strategy was to study everyday and I suppose being a good student does pay off haha. I was able to get enough upgrades to actually stop distractions from spawning after a few seconds into the round.

A few little nitpicks I would have is that, there is a little ping sound every time the bar fills up for the next question, but it doesn't ping at the start of the round, making me sort of like didn't realize the round has already started and not type in my question (kinda weird feedback but I think after you had conditioned the players to type after every ping, you should also include it at the start of the round). Another one is that it's pretty hard to type with one hand, so I don't know how you could alleviate this problem but yeah.

Overall just a really good entry!

DAMN WEEK 4 IS INSANE WORK WOW

Also that's actually interesting feedback with the ping noise, didn't even consider that and will keep it noted :D And yeahhh it's a little hard to type with one hand even with the way I put in the description, but I appreciate you still trying out my game even after ratings <3

Pretty neat game! And your game description and instructions was insanely well setup?!

Developer

Thank you! Yeah I had to compensate for not being able to put detailed instructions within the game, so I spent a whole day just making sure I had the page setup right (and I still had mistakes I fixed in the middle of the jam LOL), I appreciate you trying out my game :D

Really nice seeing people using pico 8 as the jam engine, loved the art and sound effects really matches the game art style also loved the gameplay of having to protect the brain with the mouse and calculating the mathematical results on the left not easy but not that hard, great job.

Developer

Thank you!! Yeah I love pico8 as an engine, it has such a nice charm. Thank you for trying out my game <3

Fun: more fun than I expected tbh, trying to solve the math equation while protecting the brain, also items to help, very nice, need a better tutorial though, it took me a while to know that I need to press space.

Presentation: simple yet good art style, love it, the sound design was good as well, did you draw or use assets?

creativity: really cool idea, fighting to start studying, fits the theme well, great job.

Developer

I drew all the assets! Pico8 has a built in sprite editor so I had to fit a bunch of social media logos into an 8x8 pixel grid, and yeah I definitely wanna try to add an interactive tutorial because I don't expect people to read the description for in-game mechanics. Thank you for trying my game out and giving feedback! <3

I like the concept, really neat, having to keep up with both the math and blocking the distractions makes for a fast paced gameloop and once balanced I think it could be even used as a teaching tool, since it gamifies the learning process... add a leader board feature and boom, the kids will want to score better than the colleagues and put in the work to get better at math. Good Job!

This was fun! It actually made me think so hard even though the questions were really simple! Great work!

Love the concept of this game! did take me a while to realise space was the new line button :/

That was a really fun game to play! I love the quick mental math you have to do to, all while defending your brain from the distractions. The presentation was very nice and I know you said you didn't balance the game but it was still fun and I see myself coming back to play it with future updates!

The game is very fun and addictive. Although i wish it was a little more easy (but i could just be terrible at the game) and a tutorial could be good to teach the player the controls. It is one of my favourite games in the jam so far. Great Job!

I liked it,

there is a problem with too few time limits, in the first 3 classes I did not miss a single thread in the brain. Still, didn't have time to finish test,

But it worked out second time

I really like it, if it was a minigame in a larger project, it would be a great minigame.

Really love the art, the sounds and the game overall! At first it was kinda hard to use the controls but after reading the description I understood how to play the game. Good job!

Wow, this is your first jam game? Its so polished and complete. It's pretty difficult, tbh, but it was fun so I didn't mind. I just kept getting distracted by how cute it looked ( I guess PICO games tend to look really cute like that?) I found it kind of addicting, it's a great game and a great addition to the jam!

Submitted

Simple but pretty cool! I just wished I could play it better... hardly got a level... I think I'm gonna procastinate a lot playing this.

Very cool for many reasons! PICO game with those nice graphics! Fun gameplay loop! Made me doubt my math skills!

This is one of my favorite games from the jam, the way the theme is implemented is really creative, the graphics are very cute and it just feels polished and fresh. The gameplay loop is simple but addicting, I really think with more items and mechanics this could become an actual full game, my sincerest congratulations!

EDIT:

I'm dumb and misunderstood the directions/controls, this is actually really fun despite being a lil stressful lol

I won't rate because I think I ran into a bug

I'm unable to answer past the first question, typing anything just updates the first line :/

Really cool seeing a Pico-8 game in the jam!

Super fun, how the hell are you supposed to pass day 5 though? Even though I got every question right on days 1-4 and got items (I took pencil every time bc it seems to be the strongest out of the three) on day 5 I still lost with like half of the questions remaining. And pressing O to procrastinate does not work. Especially for a pico 8 game this is very good though.

Developer

YEAHH the balancing is the main thing i wish i could fix after submitting (also the O to procrastinate is technically bound to Z since the O key symbol for pico8 is bound to Z, but obviously i coulda just put that instead of the pico 8 lmfao) thank you for the feedback :D

Submitted

oh jeez. Another game I  struggled with. For some reason, I was taking damage, but I couldn't figure out from what... nothing showed up on screen. The game was great,t though.

Submitted

Was tricky at first (mainly cause I didnt realise you needed to press space to submit an answer but figure it out pretty quick) but was neat having to multitask like that
