Wow, this was great! The visuals were fantastic and I love being able to play with a gamepad! Thermal vision is an interesting idea but I wish it worked between rooms better, you could keep it up, but the camera shift made it jarring (not sure how to deal with that) and if there were enemies, obviously being in thermal mode was not ideal.

I didn’t understand the chasing enemy’s attack, it just seemed like I got hurt randomly. Since respawning was quick, it wasn’t a big deal but did detract from the combat, also making block not feel useful.

Kudos on the generated levels. That was something I was hoping to get in but wasn’t able to get it working well enough for the jam. Great work!

Developer

Hey! Thanks for checking out the game. The camera shift on the thermal vision was an artifact of how it was rendered. Godot doesn't give you a ton of control over the render pipeline so our graphics guy always needs to do some crazy magic to achieve our crazy ideas. In hind sight I think if the pipes went through to the next room where the door was it would be easier to follow the pipes through to the next room. We went back and forth about being able to see the enemies with the thermal vision. It makes logical sense but we didn't want people to just play with the heat vision on the whole time. This lead us to decide that the "downside" of the thermal vision was you couldn't see everything. (You couldn't even see the player character in the early days). We wanted to make some enemies show up with the thermal vision as part of their mechanic but ran out of time.

The Chase enemies don't do damage until they blast steam out. The block should work against them (though it is a bit directional). If you didn't associate the damage dealing with the steam puff then I could see how it would feel more random.

We tend toward doing some kind of random generation in our game jam games. It can work well with the time constraints in giving a bit more replay value to things and is also kind of fun to try. This time we used a generation method that allowed for the lock and key stuff to generate in a solvable way. I just wish we had more time to build some more room types to spice the game up more.

Again thanks for playing!

That was great! It looked like a small demo of a published game. The graphics look great and I enjoyed the music. Maybe it was because I was playing in easy mode but I didn't end up using the block function very much. I had fun playing regardless!

Developer(+1)

The combat wasn't as robust as we wanted due to time constraints and issues with the nav mesh not behaving properly earlier in the project. Still, I'm glad you had some fun with it. Thanks for playing!

The game looks very polished and I like the music. Still, it feels a bit repetitive, as all rooms resemble each other. Also, the boss battle made the game lag. But, I did not give up and reached the end of the game.

Developer (1 edit)

Sorry to hear you had lag during the boss fight? Can you tell me if you were playing on PC, mac, laptop, etc? Unfortunately, I started out too ambitious with the assets I made, so I ran out of time decorating the rooms to make them feel more polished which I think might have helped with the repetitiveness. Live and learn, right? Thanks for playing!

Still, good work! As for my PC, it's a Ryzen 3 2200G with 16 GB of RAM (Windows). If you ask me, the lag may have had something to do with particle effects. I have encountered that before.

Developer

Thanks so much! It'll give us something to look into for the next one we do.

Really liked the graphical overlay for the steam goggles mechanic. I also appreciated the locks having different shapes for anyone who is colorblind.  Was able to get to the end and defeat the boss! Thanks for the submission, had fun!

Developer(+1)

Glad you had fun! We realized we were pretty colorblind un-friendly at first, so thankfully another of our team members found a colorblind color code to use. Thanks for playing!

Very nice art and vibe - almost like ff7 in steampunk :)

I didn't quite enjoy the fight though - it was a bit too repetitive, and tbh I hate when I face enemies over and over in the same area and have to traverse that area so often.

You really like the "steam-goggles" mechanics :) Although I agree that it is a bit underwhelming.

Great submission overall! :)

Developer

Thanks! We had some issues early in the week that prevented combat from being where we wanted it by the time the game jam ended. Plus with the game loop taking less than 10 minutes to complete, the enemies respawning didn't seem so bad to us. But it's been a common comment, so something we'll definitely need to take into consideration for our next project!

What a charming and whimsical game :)

Everything about it reminds me of the kinds of games I'd play as a kid, in all the best ways.

Developer(+1)

We were going for a nostalgia vibe, so I'm very glad it reminded you of some old faves. Thanks for playing!

Cool game! Very impressed with the graphics and randomized level setup, and the minimap was a helpful addition as well. I'm glad my uncle doesn't challenge me to a heat vision bossfight in his manor though. Nice one!

Developer(+1)

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! One of the main goals was to do randomized levels, so our team will be pleased to hear that you called it out. And you never know with Uncle Mortimer. 😂 Thanks for playing!

This one was cute! A nice little challenge, and I liked how much mileage you get out of a small map

Developer

I'm glad you enjoyed the game. Thanks for playing!

I really enjoyed the steampunk artstyle in this.

The backtracking got a little old for me 2 or three boilers in though.

Developer

Thanks! I had fun working on the environment art for this project. We realized the gameplay wasn't going to be for everyone, but thanks for giving it a go!

Nice game! The art and music are beautiful, and the atmosphere overall is well executed. I really liked it!

The main mechanic is a really cool one, but it's a bit underwhelming. Turns out you can just go through any level without it and it'll be fine, since every door and boiler is color/shape coded. I appreciate the effort for accessibility purposes though!

I think you could have pushed the use of the thermal goggles further! Like in combat, or in more variations for puzzles and exploration. Make it feel like a true central piece of the game!

Well done to everyone!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! We had talked about not having the boilers being color coded at all until after they were unlocked thereby forcing you to use the goggles, but in the end decided it would make the game too "unfun" for most people. We definitely wanted to add more combat types as well as puzzles, but in the end we simply didn't have enough time. Thanks for playing!

This is a surprisingly nice dungeon exploring puzzle game! The combat is a bit repetitive, at the end I just prefered to ignore fights if possible...

But still really fun!

Developer

Glad you had some fun! We had wanted to do some additional enemy types, but for the first half of the week we were having issues with nav mesh. If only there was more time! Thanks for playing!

I love the art.

It took me a while to understand the heat vision as I spent a long time trying to follow lines before I got to the tutorial bit :D

Good job!

Developer

I'm glad you enjoyed the art! We had planned on adding a second tutorial that would have better explained things if you found the locked door before find one of the boilers, but we ran out of time. Thanks for playing!
