Verge of Defeat plays exactly like the title says: you always feel "On the Edge" of dying. (that and we were right on the edge of the project not getting submitted at all :p)

Nice game ! I love games where the dash/roll movement gives me invincibility frames and i think it was well implemented here to dodge the lasers. By the way, those are really cool patterns! Great work!

Developer

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it!

Geez, that boss doesn't play around in that third phase!

A fun, perfectly-paced and scoped jam game. I enjoyed my time with this. I do wish I could destroy the mini-robots he sent out to attack. Don't make them one hit kills or anything, but I would have like the extra strategy of focusing on them or just moving around them.

You didn't really indicate it to the player in the directions or gameplay, but it appeared I was invincible during the dash, because that's how I'd dodge the larger laser beams. A small sprite shift, even if it was just the color, would help a lot in relaying that to the player.

Overall, great work. I'm glad I got to play it and I hope your team continue to develop games.

Developer

yea I wish I had a bit more time to fix some animation for the dodge but sadly I just did not have enough time for that, this is only my 2. game jam so working effectivly is not my strong suit yet, also thx for playing!

Cool game ! Those laser pattern were really cool ! A lot was happening on screen and yet I never felt cheated, it always seemed fair and not too hard.

I enjoyed it !

Developer

Thx for playing and I'm glad that you liked it so much!

This is fun and works good! I like how your goal is simple and notable straight from the beginning.

I was hoping there would be more feedback from the bullet hit. I were missing some boxes laying on the ground to hide from the lasers and the bullets. Also missing the gun-wielded robots to shoot visible bullets while the other characters shoots visible projectiles as well. While the characters pistol wont go trough the enemies, it would be do harm to the robots as well.

thx for the feedback! To be honest there were alot we should have done that we purely did not have time for unfortunaly, but the drones are supposed to be invincible to not make it too easy, we should maybe have made that one a bit clearer. Honestly alot were forgotten or was fine because we knew the game  but did not think about the other ones that would be playing.

very satisfying 3-phase boss fight! i was very pleased that the drones had super-clear tells, PLUS their attacks were still satisfying dangerous and scary :)

i knew the drones were invincible because i read the itch-page description, but otherwise it might be nice to maybe give them a more muted color to make them feel less damage-able, or give them a "clink" sound effect when you hit them so it doesn't sound like you did anything. that and maybe changing the boss's color to be higher contrast, like maybe a gold or white or something!

that was a long sentence to say - i really enjoyed the game, and there was some info that i had to get exclusively from the itch page, and once that is conveyed in-game as well it'll be even better!

thx for playing! And many thanks for the input, it really means alot. As anyone says: we did not have enough time to do everything we wanted, but it is something to do if we are going to make an update

Developer(+1)

Nice game! I love the small but crucial feature of being able to just hold down on the mouse button and continuously shoot. That made the game so much more convenient to play. I just had a slight problem with the tutorial screen not popping up but was still able to pick up the controls due to how intuitive the game was! Great job to the team!

Developer

Yeah, the tutorial/exit buttons may or may not have had functionality (but the controls are listed on the game page). I'm glad you liked it!

Nice work, Good art, music and sound effects.

It misses player feedback, I was shooting the drones first until I saw the boss health.
Then I shot the boss. Great design on the boss btw, and the turrets really got up in there!

Excellent!

Developer

I'm glad you liked it! Yeah, the end of the jam was kind of a rush so I wanted to prioritize the game being playable (and I'm not sure how I would have feedback that the drones aren't getting damaged, so I just stated that they were invincible in the controls on the game page).

Developer

Thx for the feedback! I only think if we had more time we could have gotten the tutorial button actually working xD
