I brute-forced learning this game which actually ended up being a satisfying experience all on its own when I finally figured out enough of it to win.  Then I thought to check your itch page and saw how many additional mechanics I'd missed, lol.  Definitely fun!

Nice! Thanks for playing!

Great showing from your card system! One day when I inevitably try to make a digital card game, I'm probably gonna try and use your framework. I'm curious if this jam exposed any blind spots in your framework that you hadn't seen before!

The game itself is really neat! Definitely feeling Inscryption-like in the foundation. I think there's definitely some stuff that's unclear though - it was difficult for me to mentally keep track of what all of the cards do or how they behave, and it didn't immediately click how the health of my cards worked or that I could stack cards on top of one another - on top of all the suits interactions which aren't immediately made obvious visually. I also never really figured out what the colored outlines meant on certain play spaces? The orange, magenta, and blue. They seemed to change every round but I had no idea what they meant.

Thank you so much!

Yeah. The cutting room floor is littered with UX and tutorial content, so I absolutely sympathize!

It's miles better than it was a week ago, but this has been an interesting lesson in how even simple card games require a LOT of UX to properly convey mechanics.

As for blind-spots: The framework held up pretty well, but I did find a few details that need polishing.

This is based off a template you made available to the public, right? That's neat if so. I didn't notice the link to check it out on the itch page, but you should add it, it looks great here!

Yeah! The card system is something I've been developing for a few years, and I'm trying to test it out in jams and small projects to test it out before public release. You can find my latest progress on the ICG discord resources channel: https://discord.com/channels/760943228697444402/760943228697444408/1355666340148...

After this latest jam, I think it's just about done, and I'll be refocusing my attention on API docs for it. I don't have faith that the code comments, alone, are enough to get people to understand my methods.

Thanks for playing!

Certainly needed some instructions on game rules! I think I understood the vibe with like a Hearthstone-style battle system (attacks units and if no units attacks player). But I couldn't understand how the different suits equated to attack/defense. Seemed like a Jack attacking a six should just destroy it but it would seem to do a random amount of damage to it. Communicating those rules to the players is needed here.

But certainly a cool concept! I feel like this could be the next Balatro, if you go a deck-building approach with adding "powered up" cards to your deck and stuff like that. and nice usage of your SDK! Cheers

High praise! I am honored by the comparisons, and thank you so much for the feedback! Thanks for playing

Ooo reminded me of Inscryption, super addicting mechanics. I think if I weren't familiar with that game though I would have struggled a little more, your itch page was super helpful but building in some of those instructions into the game would be super helpful, it took me a second to realize the damage icons were shown on the side and didn't correspond to the card number, once I understood how the UI was working it clicked but maybe there's another way to distinguish some of that info. Super fun though, looking forward to a potential future update!

Thanks for playing and great feedback!

Deff took me a few tries and some flipping between the game and the itch page for it to really click. The early game is pretty difficult but the way you can snowball towards the end and just DUMP on those oligarchs, which does feel great. The moment it clicked for me was when I realized you can stack cards on top of one another, which helped me enable come crazy strats. Biggest thing id suggest is maybe a suits cheat sheet to refer to during gameplay, cause once I had it down what suit did what, I had a lot of fun planning ahead! Great work!

Developer

Absolutely! Totally fair feedback, and I look forward to putting that in.

Thanks for playing!

i'm a big fan of inscryption, and this gave off a very similar vibe! after a bit of a learning curve, i found myself playing out game-winning combos on my turn that were super satisfying! i did find it a bit difficult to understand the rules of what columns the Oligarchs affect when there were an odd number of them, however. the only other gripe i had was wishing that there was some sound to add a little extra oomph everything, but overall i had a great time, and i would most likely come back to this game in the future!

Thank you so much!

Inscryption is an all-time top 5, so this means a lot to me. ❤️

Audio is definitely one of my weak points as a game maker, so I definitely feel the absence as well.

I did a lot of scope adjustments to meet the deadline, and I had such great fun making it, I am definitely continuing to a more polished 2.0 version, in the near future. Just need a break to get some perspective. :D

Thanks for playing!

Nice game! It was kinda hard for me to figure out the rules at first, but I got the hang of it pretty quickly and ended up winning! Pretty fun strategy game!

Developer

Thanks for sticking with it! Thanks for playing!

Glad you enjoyed. :D
