Description
I wanted to focus on making music that gets stuck in your head. Stuff that makes you want to listen to it over and over again because that is the highest compliment you can give any artist in my opinion.
I went with a funky bassline mostly inspired from games like Persona
Mallets are my favorite and the xylophone was inspired by Grant Kirkhope's use of mallets in his music
The chords use a synth to make it sound more "videogame-esque"
The percussion is up-beat and catchy to hook listeners
The wind ensemble is there to represent freedom, flying, dragons. basically all that there is when it comes to soaring above a fantasy world
And most importantly, The Piccolo solo represent the Titular Dragon. The main character of the "game"
The tracks in order are
Dragon Of Azure Skies
The Tarragon Tarries On
Wyverns Abounding
Dispute Amongst Drakes
Dragon of Azure Skies is the main theme of the game. It would play on the title screen. It is dramatic and emotional.
The tarragon tarries on is the menu theme for the game. It would play when the game is paused and in various menus throughout the game.
Wyverns Abounding is the overworld theme. it would play when exploring the fantasy world atop your dragon.
Dispute Amongst Drakes is the battle theme. it would play when in combat against other dragons.
I composed on FL studio and I usually worked my way from Bass and Chords first before making any melodies.
Message from the artist
If you enjoy the music then please let me know! It would mean the world to me to know other people like my music enough to listen to it on their own!
Theme
How does it fit the theme?
I really wanted my songs to sound more like they were from a video game rather than like a movie or something because it is OST composing jam after all.
The main way my music fits the theme is with the very prominent Piccolo that is in every song. The piccolo represent the dragon itself as I imaging the player either plays as the dragon or a dragon trainer.
The wind ensemble is there to represent freedom, flying, dragons. basically all that there is when it comes to soaring above a fantasy world. It also acts as opposing dragons in the battle music

Solid OST, gave me some N64 vibes. I quite enjoyed 'Wyverns Abounding' and 'Dispute Among Drakes', they tied together nicely.
The instrument choice and composition style makes it feel almost like a DOS game, with the graphic on the video as well. Having a short animation is a nice touch, too! Made a lot of music in a short time, too.
Dragon of Azure Skies: Nice and diverse track. The repetitiveness of the melody does not annoy and is quite catchy even (something I read was your goal). This is a great intro track!
The Tarragon Tarries On: Simple and catchy, fitting a pause song. Nice :)
Wyverns Abounding: A nice overworld theme. From this view, I expect the overworld to be very peaceful and calm, fit for exploring at your own times with your dragon pal. I like the occasional reverse cymbal. It sounds nice!
Dispute Among Drakes: This fits a simple battle very well. The repeating base is very nice, and the switch at 0:46 was very cool. This is definitely my favorite: it is just very well-executed, though quite simple!
Overall, I think you've got some very solid tracks here! They are all diverse, fitting different parts of the game, and they fit their themes very well. The sound quality is nice, the themes catchy (but not annoying after a while), and the dragon theme is present. Great job :D
Sounds amazing, I love the instruments
First track is really great. Track 2 and 3 are okay even if I am not a fan of the chord choice. When it comes to track 4, I liked the intro and the synth solo at the end, but the part where the bass goes D - Eb - C in some spots I feel like the highs notes dont fit the harmony. Impressive work overall with such a short time frame.
Thanks for the feedback!
As for the part in track 4 where it goes from D - Eb - C, since it is a battle theme I wanted a touch of dissonance since it is the midpoint of the song to create a lot of tension which is why it sounds the way it does I think.
The very first track caught my attention in a good way. It definitely stands out creatively as something unique. Props to trying something new!
My only issue is that the composition of the later tracks is a little lackluster, but that's not a major problem.
Thank you for the feedback!
I'm sorry you weren't as big of a fan of the latter tracks. The second and third ones were definitely made to be more like backing tracks for uneventful times in the game which is why they were simpler.
my turn to pay it back, I enjoyed this! I'll echo other comments and say that it really does evoke the whole retro game OST vibes, not just in terms of the sounds but also the structure of the songs - it feels like something that would be very loopable
Also, you can really tell you go bass first. It's very catchy and very prominent - my fav track and bass lines are in Dispute Amongst Drakes, very groovy stuff
Thank you for listening and enjoying!
The first track is indeed super cool and funky, and definitely a good main theme. I liked your use of chromaticism! This would honestly go so hard with live instruments (especially that bassline and the wind section).
The menu theme is super cute. It kind of reminds me of the map theme from Castle Crashers, which I personally think has a great OST.
The overworld theme is super unique! It's pretty jazzy, I could imagine it being arranged for big band, and sounding awesome. It's also a really cool take on overworld themes, which I always imagine as being super dramatic and this was kind of out of left field for me, but it's great!
The battle theme I could absolutely listen to just for fun. Again super funky, but also really energizing and fitting for a battle theme. Also, the kind of 'improvisational' flute solo is awesome. Probably my favorite track!
To be honest, the only reason I think could make someone not want to listen for this just out of sheer catchiness is the 'production' (in this case, mostly the digital instruments' sound). It works for a game jam, but if you could - and I know not everyone has the ability to - get some better 'gear' (DAW, VSTs and etc.), I think anyone who would hear this will immediately get hooked.
Despite all of that, the sheer quality of the composition is visible and stands for itself.
Great job!!
WOW thank you so much for taking the time to review it so thoroughly!
I’m not great at making things sound realistic yet and since it was on such a tight deadline I decided to use what I am familiar with and do a great job rather than half bake a more realistic sound.
I greatly appreciate the feedback and compliments and I do agree it would sound awesome in a big band style! I am impressed at how realistic others got their compositions to be!
Oh yeah i totally get it. The time limit kinda "decides for you" in game jams haha
I love the dragon animation! Very cool funky vibe mixed in with the orchestral elements like the flutes. Great job!
thank you for the compliments! I enjoy making little animations to go with my music so people have something fun to look at while listening!
I'm not very familiar with Persona, but I did catch flavors of Forager in the first three pieces, both in soundfont and song layout, which is a game I absolutely adore! Dispute Amongst Drakes has to be my favorite tho, it's so frantic and disconcerting in places, while still being fun. (P.S. great job on reviewing every single submission, you madman lol)
I have played forager but that was like 4 years ago or something so I don't remember the soundtrack I will have to listen to it. thanks for enjoying them!
Amazing to see how much you were able to create in such a short amount of time! It sounded like you had a lot of fun with the pieces. I liked how you used the Piccolo throughout your soundtrack to represent the dragon - great work! :)
When I thought of the piccolo representing the dragon I was very happy and I am glad it translated well. I really did have a lot of fun writing these and yeah I think I work pretty fast. I made all 4 within 24 hours since I was finished with everything halfway through the jam.
Thank you so much for listening and enjoying it!
I'm a fan of that playful lead synth in dispute amongst drakes! My favourite is Dragon of the Azure Skies, it's an absolute vibe. Your music reminds me of the side-scrolling games/JRPGs of the 90s, it's got loads of charm and creativity. I like how intentional you are about the instrumentation too :) good work on these.
Since I prefer going for more catchy anything music over fitting the theme exactly, I have to find other ways to fit the theme and the easiest to me is to have a reason for every instrument to be there other than just because it sounds nice.
Thank you for liking it!
Nice playfull retro OST, good job.
I appreciate it!
Really feels like and 8bit RPG soundtrack, I love it!
Thank you so much!
Really sounds like playing some old SNES RPG or platformer. Catchy music, nice rythm. I liked "Dispute Amongst Drakes" the most, it was interesting to listen to, had some good small sections witch little changes and got stuck in my head the most :D Good work!
Dispute amongst drakes is my favorite too! I am glad I made short and sweet sections because I didn't want listeners to get bored.
These are catchy and so easy to vibe to. I think you did a great job with the prompt. I can imagine myself bopping along to Dragon of Azure Skies while flying a big dragon around in a game :)
Catchy is exactly what I was going for. Thank you!
Very nice - really enjoyed the listen! My favorites are "Dragon of Azure Skies" and "Disputes Amongst Drakes"
Thank you! Dispute Amongst Drakes is my favorite as well! It was so much fun to make!
I listened to the whole soundtrack through on YouTube! I love how upbeat, funky, and light all your songs are. :) The fact that you had a little animation of a dragon flying was a nice touch. "Dispute Amongst Drakes" is my favorite; the bass and piccolo go crazzzzyyyyyyy. The xylophone is honestly the winner more than anything. Great entry!
I like making the little animations because I like having something to look at while listening to music.
The piccolo solo was super fun to make and I agree I love the xylophone a lot! Thank you for the compliments!
Man all the songs feels super fun, energetic, and bouncy. Great job. I'm vibing pretty hard.
Fun energy is absolutely what I wanted from my music so thank you!
Dragon Of Azure Skies - Dat bassline!
The Tarragon Tarries On - Secret of Mana vibes! Groovy.
Wyverns Abounding - Very fun and upbeat track! Getting "flying" vibes from this.
Dispute Amongst Drakes - Cool battle theme. Loving the touch of Phrygian in the bassline at times.
Getting a sort of SNES/Genesis vibe from this OST. Great work!
Thank you for the kind words! I appreciate that you enjoyed the bass lines since they really were the foundation for each track and I enjoyed making them!
