Good game, liked the feel of the gameplay. the dash was a little bit slow, felt less flowy than Celeste, but not bad for 48 hours or less. Unless you reused code, if thats the case, I hate you.

Good game nonetheless, cool color switching mechanic

I liked the mechanics of this game a lot, the platforming was satisfying when you got it to work. I felt the difficulty was a little uneven sometimes, where it would spike one level then get easier again, but I understand it's hard to balance in the 48 hours you have. I also think the moving platform could use a line that shows where it's moving exactly possibly.  Great work overall though!

Thank you for playing!

I need to work on more of balance of level design but I'm glad that you love it!

WOW this game was HARD, but like the good, engaging kind of hard that made me keep playing.  I knew exactly what I needed to do, I just needed to execute properly.  I didn't even realize that by the time I finished the game, I had spent almost an hour playing!  (I suck at platforming, lol)

Anyway, really fun game!  Interesting mechanic and super nice visual effects!  Great job!

Developer

Thanks for playing and really appreciate your comment!
And I am so glad that you spent an hour for playing!

I loved the visual style and the colors made everything pop.

I like the music and the usage of particles and the general idea, but got some critique.

First - level design quickly deteriorated into "here are some thin platforms with colored lasers to jump around". I think adding a bit of theme to groups of levels (like chapters in celeste) would improve how the levels feel.
Second - the response for dash doesn't feel right - character weirdly freezes in the air, and only then dashes.

Developer

Thanks for feedback!

I'll work on improving the feeling of control, but its a long way to go and tricky to get right!

Still hope you enjoy the game XD

What a pleasing game to look at but dang is it hard. I'm not into challenging platforms so I'm not a good judge on this kind of game but I felt that it had a lot of polish and great execution on its ideas.

Developer

Thank you so much for playing!

Your game is absolutely insane and unlike mine u need big brain to come up with those level design!

(Also need a big brain to play through lol)

Nah don't sell yourself short!

I got stuck on the color switch level. I managed to get the cheese just fine. But the door to the next level was on an upper floor which was all background image so nothing i could really climb up. I was probably missing something but yeah i wasn't able to work it out.

Otherwise, the particle effects are really pretty. Controls a little clunky but i got used too them.
Great job.

Developer

Thanks for playing!
You can actually infinite dash after turning into yellow!

Submitted (1 edit)

Controls were tough to use for me on keyboard, but dang the effects are so pleasing.

I was surprised that touching a wrong color platform would kill you instantly, I felt that you should phase through them which would give reactive players a small window to dash up and switch to the right color. Also, giving a freeze frame for switching colors might have helped on some of the jump and color switch levels.

I had fun with it! Good work.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for your feedback and sorry about the over-punishing mechanic!

I am not sure if adding pause to switching colors since there are already really long pausing for each dashing, but I’ll definitely consider your suggestion! And the instant-killing platform might just be a wrong decision as well. Thank you for providing helpful advice and glad you had fun with my game!

This looks really solid and ALMOST feels great to play. It might just not be my genre of game, but I found having to manage that many keyboard presses alongside tight jump timings to be pretty intense (direction + dash + timing a color shift.) It would have probably felt a lot more natural on a controller.

The movement also felt kind of mismatched for the precision the levels required (which I know is basically the pot calling the kettle black considering my own game's problems.) Jumps almost always sent me flying farther than I wanted to go (or never quite far enough. Trying to land on the tops of those thin vertical walls was pretty janky.

I expected to just fall through platforms that didn't match my color, rather than them being "deadly". Kind of a minor complaint, but felt a little overly punishing.

Fussing aside, music fit well, aesthetics were spot on and generally lent themselves well to the game's vibe. And like I said, I have a feeling this just wasn't my kind of game. FWIW I also don't think I'd have a good time with Celeste, so if anything you're in pretty great company there.

Found a bug by the way. On the... fourth or fifth level? The one with the upside down cacti and exit door - I fell after making everything turn gold. My character didn't reset back to the top of the level like it had in previous levels and instead got stuck outside the world. I tried dashing repeatedly to get back up but I guess it was caught outside the map border's colliders or something. That level skip option was a really smart addition to deal with things like that. Great job!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thank you so much for your in-depth feedback and sorry for the potentially over-punishing mechanic.

Making the character falling through platform is a really good alternative! I will think about adding these kind of platform and replace it as majority.

For the bug, I think possibly you just pass right between the reset collider and the blocking collider outside the whole map, which is definitely my fault, sorry about that! And great to hear the skip button kind of due with it!

I got a very pleasant (also painful LOL) time with Celeste and it is one of my favorite platformer, and the diagonal dash is definitely inspired by Celeste. Therefore it makes me always unable to realize the learning curve problems I have when I make this type of game because when I get used to it I would consider it will be acceptable for other player as well, but I realized that's not the truth.

I really appreciate your comments and I will do my best making games based on more feedback from playtesting instead of a majority of my own experience!

Hope we can both got some precious experience of making platformer during this jam, really happy to meet u!

Wow I can tell you put a lot of effort into the polish and it shows.  Love the feedback around dashing and changing colors and your level complete effects is so satisfying.  Great work!

Super cool but man I am not very good. I had a couple of issues where it felt like my inputs were slightly delayed from when I pressed the key - the sound triggered but the movement felt delayed? My pc may just have been lagging though.

Loved the audio trigger on getting the cheese and all the glows. Nice work!

Developer

Thanks for playing!

Can you specify which part of the movement you felt delayed? Jumping or walking? I wish I can fix it

Submitted

It was jumping ! I'll download it today and let you know about the windows build.

Developer

I’m sry but could you please try the windows build and see if it have the same problem?

I loved the game it's extremely polished and soundtrack is really well done as well as the Win music and the Orange Glowing Door when you finis a level. Dashing feels a little bit weird because it seems like it's delayed a bit. Besides that amazing game and very well done :D.

Developer

Thanks for playing!

The soundtrack was done by my roommate and I believe that he would like to hear some positive feedback!

Your game is fun as well! Nicely done with the music and gameplay.

Really enjoyed the mechanics and the polish!   The controls are a bit tricky, but I also prefer a controller for platformers usually.   Good job!  :)

Developer

Thanks!

I also played your game! It is so well polished and the atmosphere feels terrifying!

I am also learning Japanese so I love that you used 死 as the death screen message, it reminds me of the similar death screen of Sekiro and make me wanna try again after seeing that Kanji lol.

Submitted

Thanks!  :D  I actually made that kanji out of bits from the asset pack too!

Developer

OMG your patience was legendary lol. Didn't even recognize that was not font

I loved this game! the lighting effects are really cool and I like how when you havent gotten the cheese yet it shines a light on the background then it is fully revealed. I also like how the whole level glows orange when you beat it, very satisfying. The gameplay is really fun too.

The criticisms I have of this game are all centered on the controls.  The controls scheme is a bit wonky, and took me a while to get used to, I'm used to having space as my jump key.  Also, I feel like diagonal dashing is really wonky and it sometimes eats my inputs causing me to die.The character is very very fast, which isn't an issue in any of the levels except for the ones you have to get into the keyhole. It is really difficult to fit him in that tiny hole.

Overall though one of my favorites I've played in this jam so far, well done!

Developer

Thanks for feedback! Really happy to hear someone enjoyed my game so much!

The diagonal dash is a little bit punishing if you don't get both keys on horizontal and vertical axis (Ex. up and right) pressed, then hit dash, it won't register as diagonal dash. I am still looking for ways to fix this problem to make it more responsive.

The keyhole problem I just realized it because normally I just jump or dash right into it lol.

It is so so helpful that you point out problems that's nearly impossible for me to realize by playtesting along!

I may work on a custom input system if there's still time lol, already spent most of the 48 hours  I think.

Again, thanks for your feedback, it really helps me a lot!

I really liked your game that's why I took the time to playtest it a lot! I always value when people playtest my games  because I never expect myself to get it perfect on the first go. Just spitballing here, but could it be effective to add a buffer time to inputting the dash directions? there seems to be a short pause before you start moving anyway so maybe if you input another direction during that time it would register it and change the dash direction.

Developer

Yes I think that might work lol.

I had think of it at the beginning but I gave up because at that point I don't have the short pause for dash, and that lead me to think this might work differently unlike jump buffer.

And once I got used of it I just didn't realize...

Thank you so much! Really appreciated for playtesting and useful advices !

I just downloaded your game, hopefully I can help you polish your game as well !

Submitted

ya I wasn't sure how the underlying dash mechanics worked so I wasn't sure if my suggestion was helpful, just an idea though! Thanks for trying out my game, I hope you enjoy it!
