Did you work in a team?
I worked in a team of 3 with an artist and a musician. It was a great experience because I can't do either of those things.

Was the resolution a challenge?
The main issue was text size, which was fixed but using small fonts and minimal spacing.

What an elaborate game!

Love art and overall survival horror aesthetic.

Surprisingly nice survival horror!

The atmosphere is quite on point and it seems to have a lot of content.

As the previous commenter has said: the controls are a bit clunky/broken in some parts, but one gets used to them after a few tries.

The things that I think need some work are…

  • The display/lore screens: You can continue shooting and openings doors even though the overlay is visible. Also the buttons are a bit small and it would probably be nicer to scroll a whole page with only one click

  • Opening doors: You can enter through a door from a distance and still walk around while the screen is fading

  • Receiving damage: I think I would want a bit more feedback from the game when I get hurt

I still didn’t beat it, but I plan to come back for another shot at it.

BTW, this resembles a game my friend made for LowrezJam2020. I think you might want to check it out.

Keep on jamming!

Amazing work on setting up the tense mood in the game. The music is great, and kudos for the narrative work. Love the fat monster as well!

On my first try, I initially thought that the fighting controls were a bit clunky, but after playing for a bit I changed my mind — this actually helps make the player feel in danger. You have to be on high alert and you have to use your ammunition sparingly; it’s futile to mindlessly go pew-pew-pew like in an arcade game. This all contributes to making the player feel the gravity of the situation.

However I felt that picking up items or interacting with doors could be improved. It looks like I can’t press E without also pointing the mouse to what I want to interact with on the screen — I found this counter-intuitive.

If you solve this, I’m sure the game will be a lot more enjoyable to control. Great entry overall!

Cool game! Loved the atmosphere, the music and art were great. I felt like maybe there could've been more bullets for the player to get, or the enemies could have less health. I'd pretty much use all my bullets on one or two enemies and just end up running past the rest. Overall though a solid game!

Good work to all!

It looks great, it plays great, the sound and music are just right, an all around great project, amazing job!

Nice entry, good plot and great ambience. Gfx flicker a bit while moving, particularly the arms, which can be a bit annoying. Scroll button position clashes with the full-screen button and sometimes you just full-sreen rather than scroll text, but mouse wheel works fine for scrolling so it’s ok. Maybe a bit text-intense for the resolution but you guys solved that quite well with the scrolling. good job!

I love the story, and I got the secret item ^^ I wish it was longer cos I was really enjoying playing, first time I sunk all my bullets into the fat thing is it even killable? After a while i would just run past the red guys and take a hit if I had to, and I swear at one point I ran through fatty and took no damage? ,':/
great game! :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! The fat guy is *technically* killable but doing so isn't recommended unless you have a lot of ammunition to spare. I guess we should have made that more visually clear.

Very cool I like that you even got some story in, though reading the computer logs could be a pain having to scroll up one pixel at a time.

Other than that audio was a bit bare, and the sprite and animations were a bit rough, but overall still looked nice.

Cool game! I was a little too bullet happy to make much progress, but I definitely enjoyed the overall mood! The size of the window definitely creates a sense of claustrophobia. Really nice job!

Thank you for the game, i know now that pygame stuff can run in browsers!

The atmosphere is really well done with some great art but it needs polish in many areas.

Developer

Thanks for playing and giving feedback! So we can improve, what areas specifically do you think need polish?

Interaction is probably the biggest problem, grabbing objects, walking into doors, is all inconsistent.

Wow I love this. I haven't played RE much, but it has some inspiration from there, doesn't it? The bullet management, enemies crawling and spawning everywhere, the occasional jump scare, keycodes and medkits. I think this game sets the mood really really well.

I need to confess one thing, I cheated to get to the ending haha. I'm somewhat bad with bullet management (trigger happy), and I accidentally found out a bug and used it to be able to kill everything in my way. You see, when you pickup an item, before you confirm, you can click it again, and "stack" the dialogs. Then you can click to get the item and you'll be able to get it multiple times. So everytime I found ammo for the handgun or the shotgun I would refill the weapon completely instead of getting the 10 bullets.

The huge enemy startled me A LOT, as it appears out of nowhere in a place you already have been (which is cool). The text messages from the crew and the locked doors added a lot to the experience as well. The controls felt weird at times, but nothing bad. One thing that was kinda odd, and probably a bug, is that I was constantly hearing a buzzing sound on the game. I don't know if that's intended but that's the only thing that bothered me a bit.

Oh, and the ending is so cool.  Awesome entry there!

Developer

Thanks for such detailed feedback! The art took some inspiration from RE for sure (as well as Halo, Event Horizon, Alien, and every other space horror movie I've seen, haha). I'm glad the mood & atmosphere was effective (the big guy nearly gave me a heart attack one time during development too, that screech is something fierce lol~).

And that's an interesting bug~ It's not something we knew about until you mentioned it, but I'm glad to hear it (probably) improves the gameplay experience (instead of like, crashing the game, ha). I'm also not sure about the buzzing sound. That's not intended though. We're using a fairly experimental process to get this python/pygame game to run in the browser, so I'm guessing it's related to that.. Anyways, thanks for playing :) Glad you enjoyed the ending!

This is awesome! It's fun, I would like to play it more, good art, good sound effects, and the music is really good. Fantastic job!

Thanks for playing and thanks for the kind words. Glad you liked it!

So minor control weirdness aside, I have to say -> this works way better than I initially thought it would.  At first I felt too close to really get a sense of anything, but then, my assumption is that was intended.  As things gradually got more difficult I really felt the sense of isolation.  I got to the big guy and ran away, but eventually it got me.  Great stuff for the time frame, feels very complete!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and thanks for the kind words! The isolation, claustrophobia, and overall sense of fear was a goal of ours, yeah. And I think the resolution restriction actually helped with that somehow, haha.

Didn't get far, but looks fun. Reminds me of Project Firestart for C64. Nice easter egg at the beginning with the elevator code :)

The game felt slightly awkward to control, between mouse and keyboard. Also, when moving the mouse on top of the character and moving the main character gets a seizure.
