This is very well done. The art and music blend well together to create a chilling, eerie atmosphere that managed to capture me from the opening cutscene. The key mechanic is introduced well and is an interesting twist on the theme. If you want to expand the game, there is certainly potential in creating all kinds of interesting and challenging puzzles with that key mechanic.
The controls are fine but could be improved a little. For the future, you could look into coyote time for example. Implementing that would make some of the platforming sections (especially those involving smaller platforms) feel a little smoother.
Great job on using temperature and health as a mechanic - a very interesting choice, that worked very well! Having obstacles sometimes be useful to decreasing your temperature was a neat idea too, and it put an interesting spin on the typical platformer style. One thing I would say, though, is that the key temperature and your temperature being different was a little annoying, especially when having to go back to heat it up, and not being able to see the target temperature at the start made for a lot of backtracking and wasn't too fun. It was quite a challenging game too - though that's not a bad thing!
The artwork was very nice, and I especially loved the background. That giant skeleton is so ominous, and it looks so good! The lighting effects around the fire helped distinguish it from the rest of the level, which was helpful when looking for them from afar. The freezing animation on death was a idea, but it sometimes didn't properly work, namely when I jumped on a bat - why I was jumping on a bat in the first place, don't ask. The music was a good choice for the game, and the sound effects added a lot to it as well.
I always love a good story-driven platforming sort of game, and this is no exception! There are a lot of good ideas, so very well done for making this game!
Thank you very much. There is definitely lots I would have prefered to polish out, finding the freezing on the bat thing was one I found after the jam submission so didn't patch (it's always the obscure ones that catch you out). Yeah the key and player temperature being seperate did cause some issues. If I had some better indicator that was a bit more accurate might have helped. Sadly I was hitting that deadline and I'm sure you could tell there was a lot of systems for me to playtest haha.
Thanks so much for the detailed feedback. I really appreciate the depth you went into and of course the time you took to write it!
The animation and the beginning voice was so atmospheric! it felt so much like shadow of the colossus, it brought back so much happy memories! I love the sound, music and art for this game! The key heating system is also very original and a nice hat tip to "temperature is key"! Nice work!
Haha thank you. I had really thought lots of people were going to use the tkey idea. I come from a bit of a voice acting back ground so knew I could definitely sell the game on the sound haha! Also thank you so much for the kind words!
Very nice game liked the little puzzle elements with the keys making them snow flakes and such to open the doors. Not sure if you made the pixel art or one of the people that helped you but they were really well done.
I like how you implemented the theme into the game having heat as your health was a nice idea :)
Was unable to get any ending but the one were the thermometer explodes.
Thank you very much. Yes I made all the pixel art, tough though it was. I never thought I was much of an artist but people seem impressed haha.
For the other ending you have to refuse the offer and leave the mountain again. It is something I might have to make clearer in future games.
Thanks so much for the feedback!
ah well then I should have tried that out going to have to replay again with this knowledge then
Definitely an interesting experience. The music was pretty good and the sound effects worked well. It looks great, too! My only gripe is, as was mentioned, that last level with the bats can be a bit challenging, and the lack of a checkpoint sending the player all the way back to the start gets frustrating when it's caused by them. Overall solid game. Nice job!
Thanks, yeah balancing the difficulty is definitely a difficulty, particularly with the short time span, but had I the extra time there would have hopefully been more playtesting. I've not worked with checkpoint systems so far so it will have to be something I experiment with for my next game. Glad you enjoyed it!
This was a beautiful game - the background and sound effects really sell it! I really wasn't expecting something of this quality to come out in a beginner's game jam!
Good work!
Your comment has made my day, I'm delighted you think it's of high standard! I am proud of it and did put a lot to try to make it a good experience!
Great ominous ost, wish it was leading to something, felt like the end would be dark instead of it being a cliffhanger (or in this case cliffgazer) . Gameplay was intuitive and easy to pick up, i highly value that in games.
It was atmospheric game, i enjoyed it, although i would enjoy it more if it didn't had scaling issues on FHD ( 1920x1080 ), that broke my immersion:
All in all i'd love to see it as full fledged story game release. Good job guys, keep the good work up.
darn I thought I removed the ability to full-speed for that reason. Thanks for letting me know. That was something I realised after uploading to itch and thought I could cover up with itchs settings. It seems not haha. Thanks very much for the kind words!
A very immersive experience. It was a good idea to combine health and temperature, feels intuitive. Also, there are multiple endings? How do you get them?
One gripe: when I go through the door at the end of a level, it looks like there's nothing behind it and the character falls down offscreen, with the camera following him for a split second. Look a bit weird, you may want to change that.
Otherwise, a very good entry!
yeah that was a bug I found the day after submission, I didn't get enough plastering in it seems. Thanks for the comments I appreciate it!
Also, sorry I forgot to answer your other question. Ending 1 you take the offer and pick up the sword, ending 2 you refuse the steep price and leave the mountain in search of another option
The intro is amazing, it really gives me Chrono trigger to even SoTC vibes. The platforming was really good and wasn't clunky at all. and the temperature health was a very good idea on your part. Overall, this is a really great game with good atmosphere and Gameplay.
Thanks very much, I am really proud of the cutscenes, took ages to make too haha
Gives me heavy shadow of the colossus vibes with audio and plot! Great idea making the temperature sort of a healthbar. Fun trying to speedrun your way through the level before you freeze to death. Very good job!
My friend said the same thing. I think its just the sad atmosphere, bringing someone back to life, and the giant skeleton really reminds people of SOTC
Looked great, sounded AMAZING! I loved the bit of story you had, and the mechanics fit in perfectly. I would love to see this become a full fledged game.
Excellent work. Story setup was awesome and the temperature mechanic was done super well. Animations and backdrop were all gorgeous. 1 bug I ran into, you can clip into the bats if you jump on them while they are near the ground (tough to repeat but was able to do it twice). Also, was very hard to progress in last level with bats since they don't stop chasing, had to cheese them away to progress. The bat AI might feel more intentional if you limit their area and create an "idle wander." Great job and excited to see this expanded on if you choose to :)
Thanks for the suggestion. I had a few others mention the bat AI was a bit tough, particularly in the last part. A patrol zone is definitely a good idea I will make use of in the future, thanks for the suggestion!
Love the game. The art, sound and overall atmosphere is a lot of fun.
Thanks so much it was fun (and sometimes stressful) to make haha
Well, your work in it shows ^_^
Fantastic game! The mood/tone was set immediately, and I loved it! The music went great and totally gave me some dark Metroid vibes haha. Great game! (I'm not really sure how to get a different ending as I didn't see any different paths, but I got an ending where I collected a sword at the end) ((I could just be blind and missed a different path lol))
The other ending is much shorter, you just refuse the "offer" by deciding to go back down the mountain. Very minor difference and both are kind of left open to the player as what happens. Thanks so much for the comment and the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed the experience!
I really liked this game from the main screen to the end. Art was really well done and you achieved that "cold feeling". I played it twice to get both endings, there is two right?
Thank you very much. I am proud of what I got done. yes, only two endings. Didn't want to overdo it too much. After seeing both I'm sure your left feeling very sad haha
Wow, really well-made platformer. I love the atmosphere and the clever use of health=temperature=key, it makes a simple few platforms wide path be a really challenging game. I struggled a bit with the controls as they feel a tiny bit too sensitive, but overall very good job. Good luck in the jam!
Thank you very much. Yeah, it seems the controls are finicky sometimes, I think if it misses a frame it has some trouble. Given the time I would have definitely fixed those. Thank you so much for the feedback! I appreciate it :)
A really good platformer with amazing art and level desinn. The mood of the game was also immersive, although I didnt understand the ending, but thats probably my fault. This could very well become a full game.
I might have been unclear on the symbolism, but I don't want to outright give away the ending. I guess it's one of those things were my goal was to make you stop for a moment and ponder on how you feel at that point and how you interpret the ending, ya know?
Yeah that makes sense.
I'll probably replay it later to experience it again
Hi Lgro, I think I figured out the problem. A minor bug where if in the final cutscene you spam the "D" key it will skip all the dialogue before it appears and hence you will just be left with the end choice, this can definitely remove the gravitas at the ending. I can't fix this yet due to the ongoing jam but if you do play it again, go to the next dialogue with space. I guarantee that will make it make a lot more sense and hopefully impactful!
I've replayed it now and got it! I chose the going back ending.
Replaying this made me really appreciate how well made the art is and some details you added that weren't necessary, but really made the game feel more immersive.
Ah thanks so much for giving it another try. Sorry again about that bug, I can really see why it confused you at first now haha
This is a really neat use of the theme. You do a great job with the level design, too. Some very challenging sections! There are some leaps of faith, but replaying a level lets you avoid those pitfalls the second time around. I liked that it wasn't simply "enemies" and "health" but literally managing the elements as needed. Very well done.
A really good concept, and some of the later levels were quite challenging (in a good way!). I really liked the pixel art, especially the stags, and the choice of music was good too. Good job!
REALLY GOOD USE OF THE THEME, I LIKE IT, IT IS SCARY, THE BG IS CONTRASTING FROM THE SPRITE, MAYBE YOU SHOULD HAVVE USE PIXELART FOR BG TOO... TQ
Thank you! I tried to make the BG a bit more detailed to give it a sense of depth, but it is definitely somewhat of a jarring difference from the foreground stuff. I'll take that with me for my next game. Thanks again!
