I just found myself frustrated with the game. I wanted to like it though and I know that a lot of work went into this game. Has some tongue-in-cheek writing that many folks will likely enjoy. I'd love to try this again once it has a bit more polish to it because it has some great ideas! One thing I'd like to see in the next build is the option to have a fullscreen mode because the current version looks a bit wonky as is.
Anyway, based on the comments I am glad people have been enjoying this one. The dev earned it! :)
Ah, I did not know this! I just had it running in default, which had the window off-center. I'll give this another go tomorrow (it is a bit late now) and see if that makes the experience a bit better for me.
I hadn't thought of this when I did the original write up, but the trashcan by the stairs is in a bad spot since the loot inside you can't actually pick up if you knock it over from the side. I thought you might want to know that.
Sounds like my goof of not taking into account all the resolutions when starting a game jam game is biting me on your playthorough as well.
The screen is off center because the camera width doesn’t adjust based on window size. Simple oversight and was easily fixed.
I have an updated version with better multi-resolution support. I will upload it as soon as I can.
Ah. Good note about the trashcan. I was planning or reworking those. I only put so many in the game because you don’t have usable items yet and I don’t want players to get to low health and die repeatedly.
Ah, well at least you know what's up and can fix it easily. Just a shame you can't update the contest version because that would help the game. Anyway, at least now I know how to change to fullscreen so I will try this again and probably upgrade my rating for you since it should be easier to play now.
Makes sense on the trashcans. I figured that's why they were there, just wanted to give ya a heads up in case you decide to keep some of 'em around.
I have a better working version that is exactly the same except for the fix for resolution issues that I implemented after the close of the competition.
If you want to try it just for the sake of giving feedback, I can make that available. But of course you should rate the game based on what I submitted before the deadline.
Played again today and have to say that having the fullscreen did make a difference. However, there were a few more things less tired me picked up on with this version. The first being that the enemy's back row is never visible to the player. If this is intentional to spike the difficulty, I personally don't like that. Some of the attacks happen a little too quickly to avoid too, namely the foxes, or whatever they are. Last thing, and what I felt yesterday but didn't really have words for, is that the experience feels really grind heavy. The repetition just doesn't sit well with me, which really isn't your fault but the reasoning there is more complicated than warrants explaining.
I do like the art though and the world feels pretty big despite how restricted it actually is (I explored everywhere I could, even where I wasn't supposed to; found a place to slip through but can't recall exactly where). Slightly better impression this go around but if people are reading this to decide whether to play or not, I say at least give it a try :)
The presentation in this game is A++ Great graphics all around and the few characters we get to meet are wonderful as well. I love Raccoon's walk animation so much, especially his forward walking sprite strut. It's got a lot of personality.
Battle took me quite a bit to get used to. I only ever unlocked pigeons and 1 snake card. At first, I was taking battles far too frantically, when I slowed myself down a bit, things started to go better. Curse those squirrels though! Their frantic behaviour is a force to be reckoned with!!
There's not a whole lot of meat here to chew, but what is here is great. It's a funny spin on the whole pokemon-esq animal collecting and the grid based battle system provides some interesting strategy. And again, these graphics are just *chef kiss*
I'm curious though... did money have a use in this build?
Ah yes, one random side note - it's possible to retrigger the scene with the robots over and over again. To the point of, if you run forward while they are shooting you, and then try to exit the scene to the left once it's over, you retrigger it again right away! A small mishap, but worth mentioning. (You can also trigger random battles while being shot in the face by robots. Rude! haha)
Congrats on submitting your demo and bringing something so charming and unique to the table!
Oh, yeah! I think that's a great idea. I didn't use the animal cards too much until I had more HP because it was so easy to take hits there. The gun was more reliable for a hit and run. (I used the pigeons a lot more later just to block people from running away from my gun) A grace period to position the animal attack sounds fantastic.
Love the meta humor! Really enjoy the hybrid pixel-illustration art style too. Combat is responsive and engaging, rewarding careful play and environmental awareness while requiring you to be quick on your feet. Obtaining the ability cards after each battle feels very rewarding and interesting. Very impressed by this prototype!
I kinda bumbled into the art style half way through the process of making the game. So obviously I will need to go through and make everything more uniform. The Burger Bomb building doesn't match up well. I really look forward to adding more and more animals to the game. I laughed till I cried when that awful turtle animation crawled across the screen the first time. but it obviously needs to look a lot better. I was just trying to cram as much in there as I could and make it good enough in some spots to get across the point that things would look that good everywhere.
Thank you for pointing out the humor. After working on the game and seeing the same jokes over and over again I start to second guess if they were funny or not.
