I like the presentation but I could not get anything to happen after trying and consulting the controls multiple times.  I am sure I am missing something.

Developer

Hi! Make sure you have the game focused in the browser window (we canā€™t capture system-wide input). Pressing Enter/Return should toggle the pause menu. (Left) shift causes the selected bird to fly out, and from there you should be able to play. Let me know if it still does not work!

Submitted

I was only ever able to toggle the pause menu, nothing else worked, sadly.

Really fun game! The visuals are stunning, and the mechanics and overall theme of the game are also really nice. The music is pretty catchy, too. There are a few small bugs, but they don't affect the quality of the gameplay too much. The controls are also pretty intuitive once you figure them out. An amazing entry overall!šŸŒ½šŸ¦

Thank you for playing! Glad you had fun and got along with the controls. āœØ

5 points for the awesome tunes that instantly starts banging! Great style :)

Developer

Yay, thank you! Itā€™s completely stuck in my head after debugging this game so much! šŸŽ¶šŸŒ±

Fantastic take on the theme and presentation! Only comment is that the controls are a little bit hard to remember, maybe having prompts next to different actions would be helpful? You came up with the best title in the jam btw :)

Developer

Thank you!! From the moment we added crows, I knew we had to call it something with ā€œmurderā€ :D Thereā€™s meant to be some input hints (the key you can press is shown above the crow), but it seems they didnā€™t render on the web version sadly. It only works on the Linux build, I think because of differences in itchā€™s web implementation of OpenGL. Hope it didnā€™t stand too much in the way of gameplay!

The music and graphics go perfect toghether, great game! The crow is really cute even if it's being a bad boy stealing crops :)

Developer

Happy you liked it! I think Iā€™m on the murderā€™s side here; they bring a balancing force to keep the farmer from overworking themself. Or maybe Iā€™ve just been won over by the crowā€™s cuteness, too! Hereā€™s an early crow we left in as an easter egg. We moved away from this more myurderous look to the cute crow you see ingame, but theyā€™re still internally called šŸ”Ŗ myurderers.

Very nice presentation and an interesting idea :)

Developer

Thanks for playing! :)

Very cute game with great visuals. I loved the crows. I got to about 3 the first time and then the game froze, but i tried again and got further. I think my main piece of feedback is that the controls are a little obtuse and could use some simplification and streamlining. perhaps focus them more around mouse clicks and wasd. On the presentation side, I have no feedback really,  I think the games presentation is excellent. Overall, good work and congrats on finishing the jam.

Developer

Thanks for your in-depth feedback! I agree that using the mouse we could simplify the controls a lotā€¦ gotta refresh my matrix math but itā€™d be worth it. Sorry about the freeze! Itā€™s a custom engine and some parts are a bit rough around the edges, but freezing was not meant to be a feature! If it happens again, I would really appreciate if you can get a stack trace (just expand the error message in the browser console). This will allow me to find the code path thatā€™s crashing and patch it up. :)

really loved the idea! Also a really fun soundtrack, suitable for the game.
I have a bug to report tho: after a few minutes the game froze and nothing worked, but the music was still playing. I had 4 crows if that helps :)

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it! I love the music, too; was so happy when we got permission to use it.

Sorry to hear the engine crashed on you! If it happens again, could you please get the stack trace (expand the error message shown in the browser console, youā€™ll see a list of C++ function calls)? I can try to debug the crash in my engine with this information, as I was unable to reproduce it myself.

nicely done! my only piece of feedback relates to the controls, maybe point and click would have been more suitable for the game

If you can find the time, would you please check out our game as well?

Our twist of the theme is that a critic tries to play your unfinished game, and you fight from inside the computer to make him like it. Hope you'll like it!

Really pretty game! I definitely struggled with the controls, and I think this would be a good area to improve in future. Super impressive on making a custom engine too!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Learned a lot with this yearā€™s engine compared to our previous entriesā€¦ namely aiming to write ravioli code rather than spaghetti code. Glad I could push web support in time as well, since OpenGL is really iffy on browsers, but hey it works and only the button prompts got borked. I agree on the controls, it got a bit out of hand with all the binds. I might rewrite it in the future to support mouse input to fly out to peck a crop, so we get rid of WASD, Space, and Shift all in one go.

The presentation of this game is fantastic! As others mentioned the controls are pretty finicky, but I pushed through because the gameplay loop is really fun šŸ¤šŸŒ½

Developer

Good to hear you had fun! šŸŒ½šŸŒ½šŸŒ½

Man, the controls were really difficult. :D I think it might have been easier to just have buttons for the actions - but maybe chaos was your plan all along. :)

I really enjoyed it though. :D

Developer

maybe chaos was your plan all along

Letā€™s say it was that :) Glad you enjoyed it!

It was hard to play because of controls but I loved the game itself so much that I suffered through it :D Very fun concept and presentation is neat as hell, great job!

Developer

Happy to hear it was worth it! Thanks :D

Very cute game with a fun loop! As some others pointed out, the controls were slightly awkward, I think maybe a mouse-based control scheme would work nicely. But the game of balancing the amount of corn stolen is very fun! Well done!

Developer

Thanks for your feedback! Getting the numbers right for the corn economy was a challenge, so Iā€™m happy to hear it worked out well. I actually wrote mouse support in my engine just for this game (you can see the camera pans to follow your mouse), but we found targeting the corn with the mouse would have been quite challenging math (it goes through a bunch of transformations to achieve the parallax 3D-ish effect), so we left it as a stretch goalā€¦ and there it stayed. Looking back, I agree it would have been a better way to control than what we have now.

Submitted(+1)

Love the art style, the controls were hard though

Developer

Thanks for playing! Learned a lot from this one about how fast keybinds can grow out of controlā€¦ hope it doesnā€™t stand too much in the way of enjoying :)

Submitted(+1)

Very pretty art. I feel there were one too many controls to have to remember and they were a bit confusing. Enjoyed regardless

Developer

Happy to hear you enjoyed the game! Controls seem to be a weak point for us haha, though thankfully this time we had time to add them in the pause menu (you can check it during gameplay!).

Submitted(+1)

Cool idea and art! I might have simplified the controls a little, since it's hard to remember so many buttons at once

Developer(+1)

Thank you! The controls are indeed a bit convolutedā€¦ note taken for next jam. You can check the controls at any time in the pause menu, but admittedly it can be hard to resort to while in the heat of pillaging this poor guyā€™s farm.

Submitted(+1)

Very well made, the controls are quite solid once you get used to them. The art style is also very nice.

Developer

Thanks! Glad you got used to the controls; we got a bit carried away there šŸ˜…

Submitted(+1)

Really beautifully drawn and actually a cool game when I finally got what I am supposed to do. I would say it could use a little more feedback so that I know when a certain action has been or needs to be performed. Overall a pleasant entry for sure.

Developer

Thanks for your feedback! We added controls hints above the selected crow (to show what action you can perform), but I think the rendering for those did not work on the web version. This will be corrected post-jam, as it really is an issue!

Submitted(+1)

Pretty creative idea! The controls are a little bit confusing and it'd be nice to see them again in the game somehow, but I could see this being a great game with some more time put into it! well done

Developer

Thank you for playing! The controls are viewable in the pause screen (enter) as a reminder :)
