Escaping a prison is no easy feat. being a pawn trying to escape from the enemy castle with a wild magical bishop blocking the bridge home... That's a moonshot of an idea...

Nice visuals. I gave up on the boss. I kept dying after I got the shield. But overall it was pretty cool! I was lost a bit in the third(?) building with all the enemies which took me a bit to find the door. I was a little hard to see. But the game overall had a very nice atmosphere which definitely gave you the feeling you were trying to get out of somewhere. Nice job!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback, man. One of the things that I am enjoying struggling through with this design is that Black and White environments make Signs/Feedback hard to produce, because the signs sort of blend with the environment. I can't use  specific colors to grab the eye like most modern games do, because my pallet is VERY limited.

I was thinking last night, that a pingpong lerping grey to white would catch the eye, if I set the color of interactive objects to sort of glow like this, it could do it. If you can't use color, you can use motion?

Anyways, thank you for your time. I really appreciate all of the energy people are putting into playing and responding to our game.

Good game!

it lagged on my end a bit though

otherwise the atmosphere was dope

Developer

Unfortunately the web player doesn't utilize GPU as well as I wish it did.
I'm glad you were able to enjoy the environment, though. Really that is probably the most admirable feat that we've achieved here.

Such a cool looking game! You should definitely dig this artstyle even more! Just to report it was a bit laggy on my side but I guess it's because I don't allow my browser to use too much of my gpu...
keep it up!

We are actually committing to developing the World of Pawn for a year long development timeline. We plan to have a finish game by this time next year, and we're really excited- Kickstarter is forth coming so keep an eye out for it!

Nice! Best of luck with that, you have potential!

the game was really good especially the art style of 2.5D game the only thing that i really hoped that it had checkpoints cuz its really frustrating dying and starting at the beginning

Submitted(+1)

I love the art style, but my eyes are getting tired after playing for a while .. But still an awesome game.

Developer

Man, thats the danger of B&W. Eye fatigue was one of my concerns, so I wanted to blur it out with a depth of field so it wasn't too harsh all the time, but in the end- I think a person can only take so much of that contrast.

I wonder if it was not hard white and hard black if that would soften the eye fatigue?

Submitted

I think my eyes get tired mostly when the character has a similar color to the background, say both are dark or grey, so I need to concentrate to figure out which is which.

I enjoyed the visual style , sound and effects. The game play was fun and understandable although I didn't like the camera.   Keep up the awesome work. The boss is defiantly worth it!

Developer

OHH good, can you tell me more about the camera, and why you didn't like it? I don't particularly love it either.
I'm thinking the rotation was unnecessary, and I could have build the levels without the need of it, but I wonder if you have different/better feedback.

Developer(+1)

I encourage everyone to play until the boss... I spent a lot of time on it, and it's pretty fun.

The visuals are great! Love the high contrast, hand drawn look. The lighting strikes looked very cool. I thought the enemy FOV was readable (and a good use of subtle color), but I often died going through doors where I would expect to be safe. I wanted to be able to use my knowledge of how chess pieces move to predict enemy movements, but I had trouble reading which pieces were what.

Overall, stylish and fun!

Developer

having the chess pieces act like chess pieces was the original idea.
The room you died in was a puzzle trap.
There's another door that gets you into that room and you can use the upper-level to drop crates on the bad guys bellow, cleaning up the room.

Super fun and I liked the stealth gameplay. The graphics were amazing. Plus I am a big chess fan.

Developer(+1)

It was just an artist and myself, and the artist made some AMAZING assets for me to work with.

Repeat from my thread:

Had some trouble with the stealth because it sometimes felt like they were able to spot me even when I was outside of their range. I sadly made it right before the third area before dying to a rook.

Amazing graphics tho so incredibly good. How did you make them?

Great innovative gameplay, awesome music and outstanding visuals. But sadly just unrelated to gamejam's theme as far as I can see...

Developer

It's not landing for everyone, the idea was that it's moonshot thinking to escape from the enemy castle.

I'm glade you like the gameplay.

Before I talk about the gameplay, I have to mention this art. It is amazing and so nice to look at. As for the gameplay, it was simple and intuitive. After a few tries of just running through everything I eventually gave stealth a shot and even though I'm not the most patient person, the game still flowed very nicely.

Developer

I'm glad you gave it more than one try, that was my concern. If someone tries to play Quake, this game is very frustrating. Did you end up getting to the bishop at the end?

Submitted(+1)

I didn't make it to Bishop; however, I plan on giving this game another run before the game jam is over.

Developer

just watched a guy play it on twitch, its really important you get the sword in the courtyard, and use the door on the right. I never should have included the door on the left- it's a trap, and frustrating.

Submitted(+1)

that's gread.

the visual is splendid and the difficulty is very engaging. the player is easily attached to NPCs, other than that I didn't find any problem.
congratulations

Developer

I'm really glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for playin!
