Fun game! As others have said combat could use some fine-tuning, but I really liked the story, art, and foundation of gameplay mechanics! Also I'm not sure if this was a bug, but if I was being hit by a melee attack and ranged attack at the same time while blocking (with plenty of stamina) I would still get hit by one of them.
Glad it was a fun game! The combat and shield bug got fixed in a update I made. I'm just waiting till voting ends in order to update the game, but thanks for mentioning these.
This game was a lot of fun. The fighting does need to be a bit more balanced. After restarting a bunch, since blocking taking stamina, I would just turn off fighting stance and jump over all enemies. Especially the "trap". I liked the idea of the two stances. I mean, you really shouldn't be jumping around with a sword in your hand anyway. :P Another idea about the enemies, if they dropped health perhaps (or a key to a door as someone said below) that would not only force the player to kill them, but also reward the player to kill them. Otherwise lazy players (like me) will just get frustrated and just run past them all or quit. But it was crazy to see how many things were implemented into a game jam! Voice acting was great and having a story was great! Anyway, I was very impressed with this entry!
Thanks for playing! The feedback you mentioned I was able to fix all that in a update. I don't think I can release the update until voting ends, but it fixes all you and others had mentioned
Awesome job! I'll follow you so I can see it!
Thank you! It will come with a update log in the itch page once its time as it will list the gameplay changes, bug fixes, and control changes!
nice game. interesting twist on just standard platforming with the sheath mechanic. only problem was the ease of just jumping away from the enemies and running. i think the solution might be adding a greater energy cost to jumping. i saw the walls were blocked off partially to promote fighting but i guess a door/gate would work better with the dead enemy dropping a key maybe? just an idea. either way good job.
Thanks for playing! The enemies are easy to avoid and I had thought of adding like a barrier that forces you to clear the enemies out before proceeding, but it seems a bit difficult to create and may hinder the overall experience. So I decided to just take note of this for my next project as I will be more aware of having enemies play a role in the environment.
This was a decent little game! I was pleasantly surprised to hear voice acting, so bonus points for that. The stance mechanic was interesting, but I don't feel like either stance was too substantially different in terms of movement, besides combat stance having a slightly smaller jump and both stances moving at about the same speed. The enemies also needed a bit of cooldown in their attacks, or at least an opening in combat, as otherwise they'd keep spamming and drain my stamina while blocking. The final boss also locked up when he moved to the center of the room and attacked, and just stood there with his sword in the ground, waiting for me to kill him. Other than that, it was an enjoyable experience!
Thanks for playing. The boss glitch is something I never encountered and no-one mentioned it before, so its possibly a fluke, but thanks for mentioning it!
Very nice was not expecting the voice acting. Had a very comfy feel. I took the crystal so I wonder what will happen....
The voice acting is definitely a nice surprise lol. I do also wander what would the King do with such a crystal. Thanks for playing!
Pretty fun experience! I didn't like the stamina too much as it ended up making me jump (no stamina cost) instead of blocking or backstepping. Lol
Archers shoot maybe a little fast as well. Just a touch slower would be nice. Pretty well polished though! Great, clean use of sounds and voice acting!
Glad you had a fun experience! Stamina system isn't perfect, but was a nice experiment nonetheless. I do agree that the archers shoots a little too fast, so I have their rate of fire reduce slightly in a update once voting ends. Thanks for playing
This was a really nice experience, neat graphics and smooth sound. As far as I got it felt a bit repetitive combat wise, but that might get more diverse over time? Will play more!
Did you beat the game? The combat can get a little repetitive given the sword can only 3 hit combo. That's why I made sure to level the pacing of the game to 3 main levels to ensure it doesn't overstays its welcome. Maybe I got my level pacing wrong and I will try to improve next time, thanks for the feedback.
Very good overall. No complaints here.
Ayyeee! Thanks for experiencing this small adventure!
This was a great platformer! I love the voice acting, especially the enemies' lol. I had a blast playing this game. Great job!
Ayyee, glad you had a blast playing!
Really fun! The stance mechanic is very good and I enjoyed needing to switch back and forth based on the situation. Character design is nice and the parallax really makes moving through the level feel good. Music and sound are great. Voice acting is so good! Really adds a lot to the game. The boss fight was a great "final test" for the rest of the encounters in the game. Overall, really fun.
Some notes:
There was a time I had my shield up and had stamina but arrows were still hurting me. I just reengaged the block and it worked.
Would have loved to play on controller!
I think adding some gravity on the down of the jump (so that you fall faster than you go up) would make it feel nice.
On the run animations! Especially on the passive stance, those knees should come up for the run cycle. The upper arms as well! In combat, it makes sense not to move as big, and the sword and shield hide a lot of that anyway.
A really fun game!
Thanks for the detailed feedback! There's a bug where if two things attack the player at once with the shield (arrow and slash for instance) the shield can't fully protect the player. I don't know how to fix it, so for the meantime its there. Controllers didn't cross my mind on release, I be sure to add that in when voting ends. Gravity being more powerful down is definitely a nice idea to consider. I'm not really good when it comes to movement animations, but I'll see if I can polish that better after voting. Again thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed the game!
The voice acting and pixel art are my two favorites in your game!
I was struggeling with the controls. On Central Europe QWERTZ keyboards the Z key sits in a completely different place (at the Y key position). This is mostly unknown to devs not living in France or Germany.
Tried to play with the mouse instead, but there are certain lags and character orientation issues, so I got a lot of hits.
Glad you enjoyed my pixel art and the voice actors performance! I never knew keyboard placements over there is very drastic. I hope it didn't hinder your experience too much. I would need to look into those keyboards for future projects as well then
So good that I played it twice just to see what happens when you select "destroy it" (although doing that I encountered a bug where the boss started with zero HP the second time). Besides the "being able to ignore enemies" thing people have brought up, I thought the combat was pretty engaging. The presentation is clean, and I really enjoyed the voice acting (though part of that could just be ironic). My biggest issue is the keyboard mapping on sheathing/unsheathing. The 1 and 2 keys feel too out-of-the-way for both keyboard schemes, and I'm not even sure why there had to be two separate buttons for sheathing and unsheathing; you could've just had one to switch between the two modes. Otherwise, really good job.
Thanks for playing the game twice! The boss hp being zero on the second run is due to me forgetting to reset his stats after the player beating the game haha. The keyboard mapping is a fair point, I will try to think of a new spot to place them in then. I originally planned for one key, but had some coding issues with it which strayed me from that. But I will see if I can update the things you mention once voting ends! Thanks for the feedback
Tha game works very well and the graphics is awsome. The sound is great!!!
Thank you! I'm glad the graphics and sound were able to enhance your experience
Loved the voice acting and story! You can really see that you put it a lot of efford into it. There are some balancing issues making it most efficient to just run through the level ignoring all enemies, but aside from that very solid work! Good job
Thanks for playing! The balancing issue of being able to run past them is something I'm still learning how to deal with. When playtesting I figured it was fine, but had to make sure some areas are blocked off which forces you to fight.
Nice voice acting! I really liked the sprite work, as well as the paralax scrolling background.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the artwork and the voice acting!
This game was fun and charming. The voice acting was a nice touch and I was short and fun enough to make me play it twice to see both endings. 2 minor issues though. The audio did not work well at all in browser play. It was very choppy. It worked great on a desktop version, but still thought I should mention this. I also killed the boss in one hit on the 2nd playthrough. Not sure what caused this to happen, but I assume it was a bug. Despite those two minor things, the game was great.
Thanks for playing! The voice acting really adds a whole new dimension to this. As for the audio being choppy is pretty weird as the playtesting my team did on the web didn't encounter that, but glad to hear the download version worked well! Hmm I understand the issue you are talking about for the 2nd run as I must've forgot to reset the boss hp at the end. Thanks for pointing that out!
