  • Really like the story and even the art style is unique and cool. Gameplay is pretty good with evolving mechanics for the different enemy type and obstacles. Music is good and controls are decent. Hitboxes could be improved as they are bit weird to tell when you should be hit or not. Having to sit through the dialogue all over again when you die got pretty annoying though, should only show dialogue on first run/be able to skip on subsequent. Having a score/progress bar would've made the game much more rewarding to play
  • Great game i think it does fit rivalry well and in terms of theme could have been improved to fit the mystery companion i na bit better. I did have to play the game afew times to get started really so i think the overall user experience could use osme work. In terms of innovation i saw glimpses of it but perhaps could have used a bit more work. Great submission.

Tell us about your game!

Hey  Farnoway !

How are you? My name is Ilias.

I tested your game, "✶ Freedom In Nowhere ✶"

_______________________________________________________________

Simplistic colored choices can results into nice and coherent content when properly executed !

_______________________________________________________________

At the begining the loading screen takes to much time  , i think it's a unity bug (if u used unity ) , many other jammer had it too on their game entries .

Runner Games can be fun and nice memories !!

Questions:

Did you implement any optimization techniques, or did you choose to use only in-engine optimizations?

What engine and tools did you use to create your game, including the graphics?

How challenging was it to develop your game? Did you face any significant obstacles?

What inspired your game idea and gameplay? Could you share the story behind the game's name?

How did you get into video game development?

_______________________________________________________________

Note: It would mean a great deal to me if you could rate my game. If you haven't already, feedbacks from friends and fellow gamers is valuable to me. Thank you in advance for your consideration and your time.

Thanks!

Ilias.

Hello, Ilias, and thanks for playing Freedom in Nowhere!
I used the Godot Engine as well as Aseprite for my game, and because of its simplicity, I didn't require any kind of optimizations. The only thing that was difficult for me was to make the attacks 'sync' to the music, but at the end, I think it turned out pretty good! I started game development a couple of years back with a small game, and from there on, I have expanded its universe; this game is part of it. Regarding aspects of the game such as the name, and gameplay, they just popped out in my head! There is no hard explanation for that, heh.

I have played your game before, yes, but unfortunately my computer can not run it that good, therefore, I can't rate it properly. I do have one question for you though: What is the reason behind all your games being called "A Little Thing Made out Of Clay"? Whatever the anwser is, I bet it's interesting!

Hey again Farnoway,

From your experience, is Godot easy to learn? Does it have visual scripting for non-super coders?

And was the 10-day timeframe for the jam enough for you to develop your game, or were you forced to set aside some mechanics that you originally wanted to include at first?

Oh, unfortunately, I need to improve my computer too. I have an old one, not as performant as I want. I can't do with it what I truly want to make—too many crashes and too much lag. I need to find a new machine as soon as possible.

Well then, for the rating, no worries. Thank you for taking your time to check my game; it's much appreciated!

As for the name, 'A Little Thing Made Out of Clay,' it is a full game (maybe a series) that I intend to develop. Actually, I've already started. When I participate in game jams, I try to have the playable characters made from the ideas I already have for 'A Little Thing Made Out of Clay.' In that way, all the interesting mechanics I create in the game jams will be implemented in the full game too if properly executed.

Okay, this was such a really really really good entry. One of my favs. Love the concept. Absolutely love it. The white brother & refraction thing was really impressive to me. Fluid responsive controls - great variety of obstacles & such. Very good balance as well. Easy to pick up - Hard to master kind of gameplay. Honestly there are always bits to improve in a game but I only wish to say positive things about this one.
Well done. 👏

Thank you very much!!!
And that's for sure! I already have a list of things that could be 10 times better 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼

Very dynamic game with a great storyline. Passed till the green one :)

For the triangle obstacles collision works a bit weird, sometimes decreases HP, sometime not.

In general the game is cool! Good job!

Developer

Oh yeah... the collision with the triangles is rather small because I wanted to be cool with them. But now I know that I was too generous hahaha! Thanks for yor comment!

The game is responding quickly and well to keyboard commands.
So far I've managed to complete the colored levels.
I still haven't managed to overcome the gray area.

Developer(+1)

That's good to know! Hope you can manage to see the ending!

That was really cool! I like the vibe of the game, very punchy! You might want to change the colors or the value on the healthbar a bit maybe, it’s hard to see your current health, and the collision with the huge triangle spikes seemd a bit off, in the sense that while jumping, our character goes through the top of the spikes without taking damages. On one hand it’s forgiving, but on the other hand it does not give the player a good feel for the precision of his jumps. Other than that, great execution, the game is solid and really fun to play!

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for the feedback on the healthbar! I do  agree on it.
It seems I really didn't measure my 'forgiveness' in the very first attacks lol. I did that on purpose because I knew they were going to be hard, but it can be changed. 👌🏻

I like what you did here. Very coherent entry with fitting music and visuals. I think most of the feedback already pointed out some of the issues, but for it was missing some kind of checkpoint or system to make you progress.

I tried to reach the end a couple of times, but I just gave up due to some difficulty spikes - which are to be expected in a jam, so no worries :D

I'll be checking this out again if you plan to do some small QoL updates.

Also, regarding the companion aspect - I was not sure how this was implemented. My take is was that the brother was both companion as well as the opponent?

Developer (1 edit)

Mch, sad you didn't get to the ending. If you want you can check out a small playthrough of the game below. And you are correct! Apolo and his refracted variants are both the 'Rivals' and the 'Companions' of the game!

amazing game, its very fast, the hitboxes are nice, but yh the begining part is alreayd pretty hard

Developer

Thank you! And yea... the start is hard on purpose because (storywise), the red one is the most angry and difficult to deal with. That's why the generous hitbox size on his attacks lol.

Very nice game! I really liked the idea of the different personalities for each color. The gameplay is also fun.

If anything I would have liked to have checkpoints or at least a way to fast forward dialogs to get back to the game faster.

Either way, nice job!

Developer (3 edits) (+1)

Thanks!
And yeah, I do agree on that. The skip dialog was implemented at the start, but got rid of it so the music could "sync". Will definitely consider the checkpoints and dialog skip for a small update.

The game is very unique and super fun! The storyline and art were amazing. You did a great job!

I'm 99% sure you're going to get first place!
