A lot of mechanics for sure! Neat combat, though I agree about pause maybe or 'repeat last command' sort of mechanic to be present so it won't feel so clunky at times.

Encountering strange bug when I not able to close inventory screen so it forces me to close game and start over all the time though :( Several runs died this way for me..

But its really nice and enjoyable game indeed!

Developer(+1)

Thanks!  A few things auto repeat, that being melee, throwing weapons, and bows.  The game isn't really clear about which do and don't.  The auto repeat also only happens if that exact action is still valid, so it won't change targets when one is defeated.

The main culprit that I know of with inventory issues is having a different resolution than mine, and I didn't find out about this until it was too late to fix for the jam.  Still not entirely sure why that is.

Submitted(+1)

I noticed that items were disapearing when bug was happening, not sure if its related to resolution or not, but possibly - I indeed could click on party members outside of the inventory menu and try to select other comands and such.

And yes, probably why I never understood melee were autorepeating is because I was spamming everything until things were dead! Making it nearly impossible for me to notice... maybe some 'repeating action' icon next to cooldown line or something similar in future (if there will be continued work) could help to show it.

(Also laughted on possibility of wearing only one boot - sounds uncomfortable)

I have found the Altar of Annihilation.

Party creation yeah! Plus some character development as well and localized damage. I never interacted with the inventory, not sure if there's a way to get money of if there's anything you can pick inside dungeons, it's fine either way, the game is furnished.

Overall I like the presentation, particularly enemy animations, character portraits and music and I am happy you chose instant movement. 'S' should probably do something, either turning or moving back is fine.

The dungeons themselves are not terribly exciting but the multiple enemies all look cool and with instant movement the exploration is fun anyway, combat is fine even if preparing while an enemy is walking towards you seems unfair (I guess you don't have to do it). The theme seems to be only narrative, I guess that's better than nothing.

I'd probably enjoy anything with party creation and this was no exception, I had ton of fun playing it, thanks for sharing.

Developer

Thanks for playing and I'm happy to hear you enjoyed it.  There were chests in each dungeon you can get gold and items from, but the art was not done in time for them so they ended up being just these dark purple placeholder squares.  I don't think I ever actually wrote that down in the how to play that you can open them and there was not enough time to add in a tutorial like a planned

Submitted(+2)

Thanks, I wondered if they were chests but just clicked on the chests and never thought of trying a character's Interact command instead, now that I know they are I just checked, your inventory system is indeed quite fonctional. The game is very complete, congratulations.

Do you intend to expand it?

Developer

Yup, we've got plans.  First is just making it a little more polished as it is.  After that comes expanding its content

Great game.
The only suggestion I'd make is, maybe just freeze everything automatically as soon as a player bar is full, and unfreeze once you've made your commands.
You kinda need to use freeze every time to fight efficiently since it takes quite a bit of time to navigate the character commands.

Developer(+1)

Thanks, I'm planning out some changes to how giving orders works.  Hopefully, that might end up being much smoother and it could end up make freeze time superfluous, but I guess we will see how it turns out.

The game is awesome. Lots of mechanics. However, I need to click action buttons and click the enemy to attack. That is quite a lot but I think that's where the time freeze timer comes in.

A little UI/UX polish would make this game even better.

Developer(+1)

Thanks!  I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed it!  Once the rating period is over there will be some updates to fix up some bugs and add some QOL improvements as well

First of all, awesome game. I am honestly amazed at how much mechanics this game has! Graphics are also awesome a bit of a bummer that they were made before the game jam but the final product is nothing short of awesome! Did not see the theme however

Developer

Thanks!  I'm glad you enjoyed it!  Theme was life/death, you need the blessing of the Goddess of Death to kill something that has eternal Life.

Such classic vibes coming off of this one; I am in love!

It feels like there was so much thought put into this and was hooked from beginning to end. As others have stated, the combat was a little awkward at first but I got the hang of it after a few tries. I really enjoyed it!

I would absolutely play a polished and bigger version of this game. Great job!

Developer

Thanks!  I'm glad to hear you liked it!

This really gives off a classic CRPG kind of vibe, I can dig it!

It feels very well put together, and is very engaging to play. I was little confused by the way the UI worked at first since it feels very mouse based, but I got it pretty quickly.

I like your use of a grid based UI although on my display the hitboxes for the grid seem to be off quite a bit, but that's not a deal breaker (I'm using a 1440p monitor, also consequently since my monitor is big it's a bit uncomfortable to read the text since it spans the entire width of my display.)

I'm a little surprised you cannot seem to backpedal though!

Developer

I'm glad you enjoyed it.  I'm still working on figuring out how to get Unity to just have the UI do what I want consistently (inventory issues are the prime example) and the game could definitely have benefitted from some hotkeys for sure, rather than your combat actions only having on screen buttons.

Submitted

Haha, I don't even know what I'm doing with the UI in Unity... I also had inventory issues because I wanted to make it in 3D world space, and mine is much simpler than yours!

A nice little crawler that resonates with me because of the retro aesthetics and instant movements. The combat was a little bit confusing at first but I started getting into it. Nicely done!

The game is a little bit rough around the edges but with some work and polish it could be a solid crawler.

It ran well for me without slowdowns.

  • +1 for instant step
  • +1 for a correct perspective view that shows parts of the floor and corners of current tile
  • +1 for (kind of) a character generation
  • +1 for elaborate character stats and inventory system
Developer

Really glad to hear you liked it!  We are already talking about ways we can polish this up for a v1.1 release after the rating period ends

The game runs at about 7 FPS, but that's probably just my proton instance being weird.

There is a strange interlacing effect when anything moves,  I am not sure if that is a problem on my end.

I managed to escape the dungeon with the zombies and arrived in a town, but I was broke and entered another dungeon.  I was defeated by the inventory screen that appeared that I could not close.

Decided to start again, but this time none of the zombies can move and I could not target anything.  Hitting escape and then closing the escape menu cleared that up.

Technical issues aside, I think the time freeze should last as long as you need it, rather than have a set timer. It's a bit of a struggle to setup all the attacks in the time you get, especially when there are multiple enemies.

All of the stats and items are a nice touch, and the grid based inventory is always good to see. I really liked the sound design in this game also. I think given some polish and bug fixes, this could be a very interesting game to play through.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback!  I definitely should have planned on having less dungeons so I would have had more time to polish overall.  I'm sure Lisa will be glad to hear you liked her sound designs.

I always love being able to name characters, pick portraits and build a party. Not many crawlers this jam have that so thanks for including it!

My biggest challenge with this game was the UI. It had a real-time element where I was clicking on characters to get a popup menu and then selecting from it during a times. That was a bit stressful, I think if you're going with real time then the fewest clicks possible getting to the action is the way to go.

Well done on a complete game!

Developer(+1)

Thanks!  Yeah, I think my implementation of the UI needed some extra time in the oven, but I had overscoped the game and was bouncing around so many places at once it ended up falling through

Submitted(+1)

Sounds like every game jam ever :)

Submitted(+2)

The game feels pretty nice but I encountered some massive UI issues that eventually got me stuck. The Inventory slots were all very offset (hovering over a chest or ground tile was offset by several units on the X) and opening the settings menu in town completely stuck my game since the sliders were in the upper right corner and I couldn't exit the menu anymore, not being able to reach (or tab) to a button. :(

But I did go back and go through the whole game and I quite enjoyed it. Would have also liked some hotkeys, because I was clicking like craaazy. But I got to the altar with all the ritual ingredients and won the game. Good job overall!

Developer

Glad you liked it :)  I think I accidently did something at 3am that broke the inventory UI slightly, but there were only a few hours left of the jam and I was too tired to even figure out how or why.

For the setting menu... that's just a big oversight on my end.  Forgot to test it and it slipped my mind
