I was one of the official judges this year, and now that the results have been made public, and I'm free to do so, here is my score and thoughts on this title:

Overall score: 9.5

Loved this game. It was short and sweet, and the puzzles were engaging enough without overstaying their welcome (sometimes when you use the same style of puzzle a lot in a game like this it can feel overly repetitive). I loved the art, and the combat animations were incredibly fluid. Great stuff! I wasn't a huge fan of the combat itself, however. It was pretty basic, and didn't really do anything to add different strategy, especially after you unlocked max rank Tail Sweep. But, the game was still a great entry despite that.

Hey Hawk, loved watching you play through the game. Hope you and the people found some enjoyment in it. Thaanks :D

Resurraptor

by Wumbohek

Hey there Wumbo, thanks for submitting a project to the 2022 IGMC. I'm Drifty and I was asked to judge your game in round four of the IGMC 2022 game jam. Here's some feedback about your project.

I love the art style. It's simple and works well in a game jam setting.

The baby dinosaur cry sound effect is adorable and the writing is cute.

The combat system is pretty simple but it works well.

The puzzles are not overly complicated and I personally appreciate that.

Some skills like the scream and tail whip give the option to select an enemy, yet they are AoEs that hit everything. Maybe consider changing them so they don't require you to input a target if they are an AoE.

I think a really good idea would have been to fully heal your raptor when exiting combat. That would minimize on backtracking by quite a lot and made for a better playing experience.

Changing some of the sound effects and adding new ones in various areas could have been used to customize and further enhanced the experience.

While I appreciate the UI, it's probably a little bit bigger than it needs to be. You could make it a bit smaller to better utilize that real estate.

I liked the twist ending but I feel like it could have come to another conclusion and if felt like it just suddenly ended. Honestly I was hoping for a last boss fight.

I feel like the game suffers a lot from being forced to backtrack to the healing point so much, especially so because the maps were quite large.

Anyway I think that this is an excellent game jam entry and I that you've done a fantastic job! Keep up the great work and I look forward to your future works.

(P.S. There's a game breaking loop bug that replays that last events, but it's after the credits roll so it's not really a big deal.)

hey Drifty. Thanks for the message. A lot of good points to consider. A useful read and I appreciate your time 👍 :)

Hey there Wumbohek , I got your game for judging so here are some of my thoughts. Your excellent art choice made the game really stand out, and playing as a dinosaur made it even better! The story itself worked, though I was disappointed in the ending and wish I had a choice in it (maybe a battle scene when the player could decide whether to attack or guard?). I know you probably ran out of time, but the ending felt rushed.

Battles were awesome to look at since you obviously put time and love into the animations, but I did wish the enemies were a bit more varied. They only shot at me, and since battles always had multiple enemies I ended up just using Tail Sweep and focused on upgrading it. I never guarded since battles didn't last long enough to feel like it was worthwhile, and while Scream was useful at first I found only dealing damage to usually be the best option.

I did feel like the maps were too large, much of my time was spent running up and down hallways when I really would've preferred focusing on the puzzles and battles. Running back to the healing station after a few battles really slowed the whole game down, so I wish the halls weren't so long.

Overall, this was an interesting game with good, straightforward, puzzles, but suffered a bit from the contest deadline. I hope you spend some more time with this game to really bring out its potential.

Hey, thanks hiddenone! I appreciate the message and the feedback. All fair points, and yeah I do plan on giving the ending some more attention in a future version ;)

(+1)

I appreciated it sooo much, go check my very looong comment on game page (i just don't wanna copy-paste it here). Then if You would reply, here i am :)

Developer(+1)

Hey GrafiKaos, I saw your comment! Wow, thanks for taking the time, it was a good read. All fair points and interesting/creative ideas. Your assumption about the ending was right hehe, was a bit rushed. Hopefully I can improve it after the jam! But I'm happy to hear it was a memorable experience :)

It was, at the point i also played Pinky, so similar in same things and very nice too!

Are You going to make a sequel/long game about Resurraptor?

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

I'll probably move on to another project to be honest. But I'll come back to polish this one and add some things, using you guys' feedback. I plan on adding a choice at the end as well, so an alternate ending. But probably not a sequel.

(+1)

Whoa! You're great! Feel free to let me know, even here as a reply on this comments. Do You have some social page/profile?

Developer(+1)

no social pages (I probably should make one :p), but I'd be happy to message you when I got some news on the game :)

Spoilers: We enjoyed it :)
Keep making games :D

Developer(+1)

heey that's awesome, thanks! Loved the predictions ;). And yeah, I did want to give the player a choice at the end who to side with but ran out of time unfortunately. So might add alternate endings in the future, because the rat has a point :p

This game is so cute and completely not what I was expecting from the title. I felt so bad for the poor little dino, getting taken away from his friend and being left to that ending. :(

Great work with this and good luck!

Developer

thanks for commenting and playing, erin! Yeah the dino didn't deserve that :p

Very cute with a well-made look, though yeah, the battles do get kinda repetitive - which is why I respect that you deny us a final battle in favor of an emotional resolution.

Developer

Hey thanks for playing and stopping by scitydreamer. A fair comment! :)

Submitted(+1)

Hey I played this one yesterday and I really enjoyed it, especially the characters, pixel art and animations in general! :)

My only complaint is that the battles become a bit repetitive due to the poor variety of skills and enemies, but the fights are fast enough to not drag the experience down. The puzzles are ok too!

Well done! ^^

Developer(+1)

hey that's awesome MissingSeven, thanks for playing and leaving a message! Yeah, it kinda needs more enemy types, I think you're right about that ;)

I got this game for judging, so here are my thoughts posted rapid fire style.

Oh my! This game is so cute! A dinosaur!

I like how you make early battles easy as I learn how to make my way through the game and get used to your battle system.

Puzzles are well done. Not too confusing or anything.

Eating my foes for the win!

That rat!

Ok those don't really tell you much but its also because I didn't want to spoil it for anyone else. But I really liked this game, it was well done and well polished. Battles were well balanced, and the dinosaur upgrade system was neat and well implemented. Ending was a little sad though, but it fits the game.

Developer

heey, thanks for playing and sharing your thoughts! Good luck with the judging bgillisp! :D

I really liked the art and sprite work! The opening scene  really set up the relationship between the characters well. Nice work!

Developer

heey, thanks for stopping by Nowis337. Making the art was definitely good fun ;)

I really love the pixel artstyle for this game. After I tries to play this game, the scene for this game remember me film Jurrasic Park, interpretation the MC like "Blue" the named from daughter raptors. But my first impression to play this games is confuse how to play it. Maybe I suggested you can try to cover, with tutorial that can help a newbie player to understand play this games. Overall this games is good. Well done!!

Developer

haha that's awesome, I love jurassic park! And thanks for the feedback, it's good to know if things are unclear to the player.

I - MUST - PROTECT - NUGGET!

I really love what you did with this game: the starting cutscene was amazing and you are immediately taken by the story. The graphics and animations are well-done, especially during battles! There are little quality of life you can do it to improve the game (in some menus you can see the cursor shift to the raptor when you exit or the last cutscene) but in the end I think it's an impressive work, kudos!

Developer

hey Thund! Happy you played the game. thanks for stopping by, SoulsSpectrum is awesome btw ;)

Halo! I played about half of Resurraptor on stream. I left some points, but please feel free to ignore me, I just thought I’d leave my comments on the vid here too.

  • + Custom pixel art is cute, the raptor is great! The animation is lowkey amazing.
  • + Raptor REE noises are adorable.
  • + The amount of custom art is impressive and pretty good quality (tho I’m entirely partial to the raptor and animations over anything else).
  • - Once you cover the tutorial, game feels sluggish. It would help a ton if it was snappier, as it is it doesn’t feel like it “fits”.
  • - Gameplay (combat, puzzles etc) feels kind of stock and filler. Again if it was much faster and snappier it wouldn't be so bad.

 Suggestions for future polish, maybe?

  • I feel like footstep sounds would go a very long way in this game.
  • The skill learning scene definitely needs some work, it’s very awkward.
  • TL;dr this would be rgeat as a much snappier and fast paced game, it's too slow now.

This is definitely a great effort within the time frame, but as a game alone it lacks some much-needed snappiness and polish. It just feels very “basic” aside of the cool art now, which can only take it so far.

As it is right now, for the IGMC 2022, I got bored and stopped playing at the midpoint after clearing the second hand-locked door. It’s such a pity because the art is great, but I understand everything takes time and there probably was not a lot that could be done. Cheers!

wow, thanks for taking the time and share your thoughts, Indrah. It was a good read and fair points! :)

What made me want to play this was mostly because of the title, so I decided to go for it. What I got was a neat and engaging puzzle game with a heartbreaking story, sweet graphics and a quite cool combat system as well. It's just the transitions that could be a bit more clean and after the final credits, the game doesn't end and instead the last cutscene is repeated. Other than that, I didn't find any mistakes. It was definitely worth my time and I enjoyed this game a lot. Very good job, lemme give you a 5/5.

Developer

That's awesome TwoFaceGames! Thanks for playing and leaving a message. Yup, transitions could use some cleaning up  ;)

This was beyond adorable and I loved every second of it - and not just because I love dinosaurs haha! Lil running Nugget sprite was precious. Puzzles had good challenge, but never difficult enough to slow the gameplay. How dare you hurt me with that ending.
Also, very minor issue, but after the credits, it doesn't return to title screen and just loops the ending event again on a black screen. Game on a whole was amazing and very enjoyable.

Developer

awh, that's such a nice comment, Cythera! you're right to point out the credits thing, that's a little oopsie on my part, hehe ;)

Watched a friend play this game for a bit. The amount of custom art and animations is fantastic! And adorable. It would have benefited from a bit more fast paced gameplay, but the amount of work that went into making a unique looking game and adorable raptor is worthy of praise alone!

Developer(+1)

yeah making the art was definitely the most fun part! thanks MakioKuta for stopping by :)
