How did you/your team interpret the theme?
You are not the hero, but you're not the villain(s), either. You're an angered neutral party (of chickens) who hates both.

How was your/your team's experience in this jam?
Despite feeling like I procrastinated a lot, I've actually managed to submit fairly early for once, which was a surprise! This is also my first top-down game, and uh... yeah, i'm not gonna try one of those for a while...

Nice spin on a class gag for fans of pixel art Zelda games.

PROS:

  • Surprisingly diverse cast of enemies to encounter and they all have unique challenges to deal with. Also like how they were iteratively introduced over time so players can get used to the mechanic of simpler enemies before dealing with more complex enemies.
  • Pixel art looks great and consistent across the environment and characters alike.
  • Combat areas are nicely spaced out so that there are plenty of "safe" spaces for players to regroup and get a hang of their controls.

CRITIQUE:

  • Played on keyboard and definitely got a "pat your head and rub your belly" feel from the controls. I'm sure with controller it's more intuitive with twin-stick behavior, but for keyboard it would be nice to have the mouse dictate my targeting since that's a broadly used control scheme for twin-stick shooter style behaviors.
  • I didn't feel a lot of time pressure other than when I noticed that the enemies were killing chickens I could possibly pick up. That made me feel bad often because I really didn't have much time to save some of them, but I got a bit numb to it over time because I didn't see much need for more than 5 chickens or so. It'd be cool to get grander or more spectacle attacks/abilities the more chickens I have to give me incentive to save more chickens faster.
  • The environment pixel art looked really nice and beveled to give the 3D top-down visuals, but I could just run over a lot of objects that I thought would block my movement. Might tone down some of the contrast creating the beveling effects and/or hard edges for things if players are supposed to be allowed to walk over them just so that it's not visually confusing where I can and can't walk.

Woah, thanks for the in-depth review! I always look forward to these.

  • Controls - They're already going to be the first thing I work on if I do find time to update. I did try mouse controls but I scrapped them after they didn't work right. I'll see about adding them back in - a few other people have already mentioned them!
  • Time Pressure - I hadn't even considered better attacks for more chickens! Definitely going to look into that, alongside proper powerups and different chicken variants. Those three should theoretically give better time pressure.
  • Beveling - Unsure what you're referring to here. I'm assuming it's the thick grass decor? If so I might have to toy around with that.

The game art is really nice and the concept is fun. Adding a music would be really cool like the others have said. But for me the controls are the big downside of the game, they feels a bit impratical. Maybe moving the target with the mouse and attacking with left click would be better. (I haven't tried playing with the gamepad) Otherwise great game !

So this is how the chickens in zelda got so scary! Fun concept and loving the zelda art

I like this game mechanics.

When want to attack, player needs to go near enemy. It risks to be damaged, but player have to attack.

Great idea.

And nice SNES Zelda-like art work!

Who hasn't played a Zelda game and thought, "I want to be the group of angry chickens?" Nice job! I love your cover art.

Feedback wise, most of what I thought about the controls has already been said by others, so my contribution would be amount you can see on screen. It'd be nice if things were a little more square. Enemies popping up from above or below give no real warning because there's less room to see them coming. Granted, this may feel a little better if the controls were changed up, particularly the target resetting every time you attack.

I had fun! Congrats on submitting!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the review! Hm, this is the first time sticking to the more square Game Boy resolution might actually be a good idea. I'll look into it.

I really liked the concept. The animations felt fluid and the art was nice. Would've been nice with some music. Using the arrow keys to aim the target was a bit difficult. I would've preferred to use the mouse to move it and left click instead of z. Instructions were clear. Appreciated the images in the brackets a lot. Good job. I had a lot of fun!

I think the best part about the game is art! (Don't get me wrong, I like the gameplay too)

I think the gameplay was pretty dynamic, by that I mean you get 10 chickens that die really fast and you have to get more chickens again, and I liked it!

Attacking was pretty hard because it was bound on Z and the chicken was attacking the place it stood on.

Also, you should add some background music to the game, because this would add more "life" into the game. Overall I liked the game :)

Developer

Thanks for the review! Don't worry, background music and better controls are definitely something I'm looking into if I do update post-jam!

Nice game! Loving the art, with its old zelda feel.

Hitting a large group of enemies / objects is pretty satisfying, so it was always fun to go to the lower right of the map, since that's where large groups seemed so spawn.

The controls felt a bit weird, mainly Z being to "attack" when its right underneath WASD, making it hard to do both at the same time.

I can see some additions of maybe different chicken types that can have different abilities or effects.

Overall a nice fun game!

Developer

Thanks for the review! I actually considered adding different chicken types in development but didn't get around to it. Nice catch with the difficulty moving and attacking too! Controls are definitely the first thing I'll change if I do update

Good cock, awesome chicks
Also, targeting is a bit hard without gamepad

I saw you posting your progress on the discord server during the jam and was super excited for your game and I love what you've created :) The pixel art is absolutely amazing, I love Link's Awakening and you have perfectly captured that style and atmosphere! And you have even designed your own logo for the game, that is such a cool thing and I really like it :)

First I was super confused by the controls because I didn't know how to press all that buttons with only two hands so I switched to a controller which worked better for me though the gameplay is still very challenging but that's not a bad thing. I like the fact that it's not only you vs the heroes but you against everyone, that totally fits those angry little chickens :D

Overall you did a great job, thank you so much for sharing your game :)

Great art, gameplay is a bit hard (I mean attack target control), but that makes it unique. I think you should add music to this game

Submitted(+1)

very nice art style and fun game.

Attack control is a bit difficult in my opinion.

good job.

Submitted(+1)

controller support is a nice touch, although for some reason I seemed to need to press an arrow key to get the curser to show up before aiming on a controller. I love the concept based on the theme and being a third party makes the combat feel more dynamic.

Developer

Thanks for the review! Nice catch with the bug with the controller support, I'll have to look into that. Glad you liked the fact you were a third party, too!

The art looks absolutely amazing, love the art style and all the different enemies, they're cute. This game reminds me of Zelda when all the chickens would come to attack you if you hit them too often.

though I must say for someone who has a Qwertz keyboard the controls were a bit hard. ^^

Well done nonetheless

Developer

Thanks for the review! The Zelda chickens were exactly what I based the game off of, haha. You're the second person to have issues with the controls on a German keyboard, so I should really find a decent control setup that's fairly universal. I'd like some suggestions in that area.

Submitted(+1)

I guess a suggestion I could make would be:

1. Just simple use C instead Z, so it's X and C, and not Z and X. That's the closest layout to the current one which would help remove the "Z and Y is switched on some keyboards" problem.
2. or you could really give "Roles" to each hand, so left hand moves with WASD and Right hand controls attacks with Arrows, Right Control, and Right Shift. That way you have one hand that focuses on movement and the other that focuses on Attacking.
3. or just add the ability to let people choose their keboard layout.

That's just some suggestions ^^
I hope that's some food for thought.

Developer(+1)

Hmm, I'll see about doing 2 and 3 if I do update. Thanks for the suggestions!

Submitted(+1)

Good job! Very welldone. Liked art style. Gameplay aa little hard at beginning.

Submitted(+1)

The art and the sound effects are good. Music is missing though. The controls are also good... although you first have to get used to them. I also like the story, the concept. There is one thing that I have to criticize though. The chickens you have to collect die waaaay to early and can't defend themselves so most of them are dead by the time you have collected only some of the chickens that you found. The chickens also don't respawn... at least I didn't see them. If they respawn they probably die too fast...

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the review! Nice catch with the chickens dying too quickly to collect, I caught it in testing but thought it was fine. I'll definitely give them some more health  if I do update.

Submitted(+1)

I love the art style, the game is fun and the controls, although not very intuitive, are good. I love the concept and the chickens are really nice.

Submitted(+1)

Fun game! I love the zelda aesthetic, the concept, and art.

The controls are a little clunky, but you get used to them quick!

Well done!

Submitted(+1)

Really nice arcade game with a nice variety of enemies and difficulty progression. The art / palette are great. I wish there was music!

Game play controls well but not the most exciting. I'd love to see this expanded with power ups / more levels or areas to explore. I can imagine a whole RPG around this concept :)

Developer

Thanks for the review! I was planning on making it a full zelda clone, but I cut it down to make sure I didn't run out of time. I'm glad someone else saw the potential! I'll see about getting music and some powerups if I update post jam, too.

Submitted(+1)

A good idea well executed. Lovely pixel art.

On a german keyboard layout x and z are far apart :/

Well done anyway. Great work.
