I loved the ambience from the sounds and the rain.

The only issue I noticed is that the text seems to be blurry at high resolutions while the game art remains crisp. From what I can tell, it's caused by the Stretch Mode being set to viewport instead of canvas_items. Alternatively, maybe a font designed for pixel art would work fine on the viewport setting.

Developer

Hi!

Thanks for playing. Yes, the blurry text has already been fixed. It gets solved with subviewports and camera zoom for the main scene. So the next update won't have blurry text.

I'm glad you liked the ambience, thanks for playing!!

As others have said the sound design is so good! I'm not usually one for clicker games but i enjoyed this one and played it all the way to the end.  I can see this being built out into a full blown game with more upgrade options and goals.

I did come across a bug where the menus (options, instructions, selecting upgrades, etc) would overlap if i tried to open a new dialog without closing the previous. Other than that, the game ran really well and felt polished!

Developer (1 edit)

Hi! Thanks for the feedback.

Yes, the menu issue is easy to fix, I'm adding it to the backlog. I'm also hoping to turn it into a full game after the jam. I'm working on it right now.

Thanks for playing it, I'm glad you liked it!

Submitted(+1)

Really good! Really liked the ambience and theme, the ending was especially neat imo.

Nice work, a good lil' idle game!

Developer

Hi, I'm glad you liked it, Thanks for playing! I also loved your game, great job!

The sound design in this game is sooo good, just the right mix of creepy and cult-y to really set the tone. I especially loved the whispering / chanting voice. The gameplay was really fun, and the ending where you finally get to summon the sleeper felt so satisfying! Nicely done.

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot! I'm so glad people enjoy my game. About the sound, I'm not even a sound designer really, here's how I achieved some of the audio if you’d like to peek behind the curtain :-)

I'm glad you liked it, thanks for playing!

Um yes I love seeing how the sauce is made!It reminds me a bit of Cult of the Lamb, where one guy did all the voices and sound effects for the cultists and characters in the game, which resulted in something that felt both cohesive and very unique to that game.

Anyways, thanks for sharing your dev logs! I followed you cause I'm interested to see more behind-the-scenes stuff, and it seems like you have big plans for Masks of Madness

look mum! I blew up the planet!

congratz on such a unique clicker game! Took me a while to figure out the right click spammed chants, but after that it was smooth sailing! Really enjoyed your choice of having the tutorial always available at the top explaining everything, great work!

PS: The shortcuts were really helpful!

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

Thanks for the feedback!

The very first sentence you see when the level loads explains that you chant with right click, but it's ok, it serves me as a reminder that some people (myself included sometimes) skip the tutorial and want to jump right into the action. And that's ok, I'm not complaining, I just have to take this into account and adapt it to the player's behavior and convey the information in a way that is not as invasive for them. I'm redesigning the tutorial because I'm getting comments of people that either skip it or find it a bit overwhelming at first.

In any case, I'm glad you could go past that and enjoy the game. Thanks for playing!!

Submitted(+1)

no no! You are right it was there! But I didnt think I could click on the main dude to activate it I was clicking all around instead hehe :)

You do have the information always available, its a super win in my book

Great game, i think its the most unique and original idle game ive ever seen. I loved the animation when you summon the sleeper it reminded me of the good ol days in pokemon dungeon :))

Developer

Thanks for the kind words, they mean a lot, every comment motivates me to keep working on the project. I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for playing!

Really nice game with awesome look and feel. I kinda missed the button to place followers, but after reading help again, it all made sense :) Great job!

Developer

Hi! Thanks for the feedback!

Yes, the followers button will be centered in the next update to make it more clear, I already added it to the backlog.

Thanks for playing! I'm glad you liked it!

Cool clicker game. I like how atmospheric it is, and how the environment changes the closer you are to summoning The Sleeper. I also love how you chose the cosmic horror theme which brings the spirit of spooktober.

At first, I didn't know you could summon followers using the button at the top right corner, because it felt more like a resource tracker alone.

Sacrificing feels good.

Overall, nice game. Keep up the good work.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for your review!!

Yes, I will be making the mechanics more clear in my next tutorial. I will also place the followers counter in the top-center, above the High Priest so it's even more clear. I mean the tutorial already explained how to buy them, but like me I'm sure most people just skips tutorials and want to jump right into the action, lol. I'll take this into account since you're not the first to point that out.

I'm glad you liked it, thanks for playing!!

Great game! The progression is pretty good. I tried to rush the ending, forgot about the masks and after having 300 followers I really understood what they did XD. The visuals are amazing and the final cutscene was really well made!

Developer (2 edits)

Thanks a lot! I'm glad you liked it, I tried my best with the visuals even though I'm not an artist, I'm pretty happy with how they ended up looking. I'll probably improve them after the jam ends. Thanks for playing!!

Submitted(+1)

Love that ending cutscene. Put my turbo click mouse button to good use.  Good work on this one.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I'm glad you liked the ending, thanks for playing!!

Really cool atmosphere for this game, I liked the way the intensity ramped up over time. The way the sped up sacrifices added to the feeling of suspense was surprising, such a neat touch. And the ending cutscene is fantastic, great to have some story in jam games. As a lover of eldritch horror, I really enjoyed the vibes here

Developer

Thanks a lot for your review! I'm so glad people are enjoying my game, especially the ending. And on top of that, getting compliments from fans of the eldritch/cosmic horror genre means a lot to me.

Thanks for playing!

Very cool clicker game! Binding the two resources to the different mouse buttons was an interesting way to balance the two resources.
Also the end cut-scene was pretty sweet, it's worth plaything through the game for that alone.

Developer

Hi! thanks for the feedback! I'm thinking about making it one-click friendly, I just have to get around the idea of how (maybe two buttons at the bottom of the screen?).

I'm so glad you liked the cutscene!! Thanks for playing!!

Amazing game! Short and sweet!

Nice! I'm glad you liked it, thanks for playing!!!

Fantastic game! The art is super crisp and clean. The UI and tutorial are super great getting up to speed and were intuitive. It starts a bit fast with how quickly you get followers so I thought it would be over quickly, aswell I was also confused why you would want to summon 5 followers at once lol. Once the lightning started immediately made sense. Sacrificing your followers was shocking in a good way and really resonated with the theme. A real inspired idea! Also makes established mechanics have further depth killing your own money makers. I did not expect it at all. The ending cutscene was absolute cinema too making it end off on a high note. Just an ominus ass tentacle

Overall I think you could have easily made it 3x as long by nerfing the speed of prayers and chants. Defiently dont wanna bore people in a jam but some of the upgrades I was getting so fast I got them before I could read it even. I get why you wanted to guarantee people get to the cinematic with how good it is but defiently want to tease them a little longer with benefits of upgrades. Really great work though!

Developer (1 edit)

Hi! Totally agree, it was hard to find a balance between people who enjoy a challenge and those with shorter attention spans, lol. Nowadays everything’s fast, TikTok-like, and people don’t enjoy slow burners as much as they used to. Plus, they have to play and rate lots of games, so it would be unfair, and a bit selfish of me, to expect them to spend an hour on mine. I just hope people see the game’s short length as a bit of sportsmanship on my part toward the other contestants.

Other than that, I’m glad you liked it! All the art was done by me, it took a lot of effort, honestly. Lots of tutorials, since I’m not really a pixel artist, I’m a programmer who can make passable art. I know it’s not perfect, but I try to learn new things every day. Still, I’m pretty proud of how the ending cutscene turned out, so it makes me really happy to see people enjoying it.

After the jam, I’m planning to give the game a more balanced pace, add a prestige system so you can replay it, and include new endings, buffs, and so on.

Anyway, thanks a lot for your review! It’s so wholesome seeing people enjoy the game I poured my heart and soul into for nine days straight.

Super glad you liked it, thanks for playing!!!

Yea your not wrong to air on the side of fast reward, expesially if you want them to see all the content it needs to be accessible. An early version of my game was super grindy took my freind 30 minutes to complete it and I knew no one was doing that so made it so you can beat it in under 5 if you really lock in lol!

Also updated my game to have html if you wanna give it another try! It had flagged as a virus for you. You defiently have the accessibility aspect way more down then me lol. Kind of trickier with 3d games though web exports. Trying to review every game for this jam as a lot of jams where people dont play other jams is depressing. Also you learn so much from playing others game moreso then even your own project lowkey! It also just means so much when people take even just 10 minutes to give there game a shot.  Sometimes you find some gems like this one!

Developer

I know the feeling. I'm also someone who tries to play as much games as I can, right now I'm half way through, I have 60 rated and 55 not rated. And I'm hoping to get them all by when the jam ends. At least I always play the game of people that review mine.

And yes, thanks! I was able to play yours, thanks a lot for the effort and sorry for the inconvenience. Cool idea! I love the secret maskarade party/secret society vibe, sort of like eyes wide shut (I actually made devlog post titled that, lol!) anyways, thanks for making the html version, I left you a review, cool idea that could be expanded upon with even more crazy ideas, lol! :-)

(+1)

5/5 I would love to see this expanded upon. Can't vote in the Jam, but you're a five star in my heart.

Developer

That's good enough for me!! Trust me, I'm not even worried about the ratings at this point, the reception has been so positive, I mean your comment and everyone else's just made this all worth it.

And yes, I'm planning on expanding the game, here are a few ideas I will implement after the jam.

Thanks for playing!!

Submitted(+1)

As a fan of anything Cosmic Horror, I thank you for this - even though it was short (although how you managed all this in 9 days I cannot comprehend) I had a blast growing my very own cult so summon some kind of cthonic old one! From the graphics to the sound and the ease of the mechanics I can easily say it's my favourite so far!

Developer(+1)

Thanks!!! I also love cosmic horror, so seeing people enjoy my game is incredibly satisfying!

About the process, all the art was done by me. I'm a programmer, not really an artist, but I'm learning pixel art and following tutorials. I know my art isn’t the best, but I think it’s decent enough for now, at least to convey an idea. I didn’t use AI (just in case you were wondering), and I documented as much as I could in the devlogs. Feel free to check them out!

I worked about five hours each day during the week, barely slept, and I worked as much as I could during both weekends. I was really focused on this project (still am!), and even though I already had a lot of experience with Godot and my fair share of game jams, I still learned a lot during these nine days. With every project I make I feel more confident, and I’m sure it’s the same for you too.

Anyway, I’m so glad you liked it, especially since your game is visually far superior to mine, that’s a huge compliment coming from you.

Thanks a lot for playing!!

Submitted(+1)

Really impressive work, especially for a solo dev!
At first glance it’s a simple clicker, but the atmosphere, art, and music turn it into something special. The mask theme fits perfectly — with an interesting upgrade system that actually feels meaningful.
And that ending… when the portals open and the whole world gets pulled into the unknown — absolutely chilling. Whatever waits there (Cthulhu, maybe?) feels truly terrifying. Amazing job! 👏

Developer

Thanks!!! I’m glad you appreciate all the work I put into the game.

Yes, the entity is called “The Sleeper”. It’s supposed to be a Lovecraftian, cosmic-horror creature or deity. I’m hoping to expand the lore with the prestige system so that, in the next prestige, you’ll be able to summon a different entity with a different cutscene. But I don’t want to say too much, haha… I guess we’ll have to wait and see. :-)

I’m really glad you liked it, thanks for playing!!

I won! I saved humanity from sin :)

Developer

You won... but at what cost??

Haha, thanks for playing!!

Great submission, the game loop was quite fun and it all felt really intuitive so easy to get the hang of. Super satisfying getting everything to max level. Congrats on your first GWJ entry! It's awesome to hear you're planning to continue working on this, I'm excited to see how you build on it!

Developer(+1)

Hi!! I'm glad you liked it!!

Yes, I'm planning on expanding it, I do believe this project has a future, the feedback has been super positive and I'm getting a lot of plays from outside the game jam. So yeah, the reception has been awesome, I'm not even worried about a place in the jam, even if I get a low place (jam voting is weird) I still believe in this, I made a devlog post with my plans for the future.

Thanks a lot for your positive feedback and thanks for playing!!

Submitted(+1)

Super cool concept and a really thematic one! Congrats on that!
Really liked the whole vibe and especially the balance of the sacrifices, consuming your followers (so you have to be attentive to how many you still have).

I think the tutorial could be a little bit more easily laid out, though! Besides that, super cool concept and the cutscene in the end was great too!
Keep it up :)

Developer

Hi! Thanks for the feedback!!!

Surely, I take everything you people say into account and the tutorial will definitely be one of the things I'll rethink to make it more natural and concise.

I'm really glad you liked it, thanks for playing! And I loved the dystopian vibe of Masking Department, great job!!
