Feels really nice when you get in rhythm and are just mowing things down! Not being full screen/cursor locked to windows bounds in the web version can create some sad moments where you click out of bounds. I was able to count the first 3 tracks, but the Scorchpot desert track really alludes me. Like others, I think strong visual indicators/UI representation of what is considered "on beat" could go a long way.

Making multiple unique tracks/loops is an impressive feat. I'm glad folks like you with the musical/audio chops went for these games on the theme Loop. I had ideas for music based games myself, but don't quite have the skillset for that (go listen to my super basic/generic loop in my game to sample the peak of my musical prowess 😅)!

Developer

Hi! The game can be put into full screen. The button may be hard to see.

Thank you for your feedback! Honestly Scorchpot Desert is in 11/4 so it makes sense it's hard to get the rhythm. The enemies bounce to the beat. I could add an indicator like in CotN but I honestly kind of dislike that indicator, it takes away from feeling the beat. Maybe I can figure something out.

I like the premise here a lot, im a fan of how the ghost pattern essentially "forces" you to use the next music loop to survive the volume of ghosts. i do think some polish could do this game good though, specifically some indicator of when exactly the beats are visually would be very nice (and it would also make the game accessible for people who are hard of hearing ;b)
Art-wise aside from the assets being a little basic i do think the art direction itself could be a little better, right now its all a bit disconnected, id like to see a specific style of music played, with a connected visual style, such as having a minimalistic tron-esque art style with electronic music for example, although the enviroment switching IS very charming.

Developer

Thank you! Jsyk, there is an indicator of where the beats are visually, it's the bobbing motion of the ghosts.

As for the style of music, I will admit to being more interested in making music for characters and environments rather than for specific styles.

The speed the ghosts come at scales up as you speed up the song at a constant rate so it doesn't actually make it any more survivable. Faster songs just dramatically increase your scoring potential.

Thank you for playing, I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

Nice Artwork and Sound!

I would love your rating to my game!

A fresh spin on the theme "LOOP", I appreciate that it's not yet another "play my level again and again" kind of game.

However I wish there was more to the gameplay, and making a rhythm game relying on music for a web build can be dangerous (input and audio lag)...

I understand that yours doesn't, but then it makes the game off-putting ever so slightly.

The visual art leaves a bit to be desired, I know you were alone in this but consider teaming up with people that you trust and can do the art, or working on your artistic skills if you are so inclined to really do it on your own.

The game is very punishing, miss a beat and you're in trouble, it doesn't seem fair as this happens straight from the beginning as you are trying to get used to the game...

Overall a fresh game, but lacks a bit in quality.

Good luck!

Developer

Hello!

I agree that it can feel punishing. I had some trouble balancing this game for sure! I included health pickups if you have trouble but they drop randomly so I understand it could be really difficult for some players...

As for the input and audio lag issues with the web build - yeah I agree that it can cause issues. The system I'm using specifically accounts for it, however... so it shouldn't be an issue more than it would be in any other game that uses timing.

As for the visual art - I'm normally a pixel artist, this artstyle is completely new for me. I wanted to try something new, and I agree that it could've looked a lot better.

Thank you for your review!

Ahh, a fellow music game entry, loved it. I really loved the track. Took some time to figure out the rhythm but got it later. Got around 1k of score, hehe. Really loved it. Would appreciate an effort if you could rank my game too.

Developer

Hi! Thank you for playing, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

It's ambitious to make a music game in a game jam , It's a good base with nicer graphics, I'm sure it would be really cool!

Developer

Thank you! Honestly making music is like half the fun of making games for me so it wasn't as hard as it might have been for others :)

Today I learned that I am terrible at keeping rhythm. Still, fun game!

Developer (1 edit)

Don't worry, you can get better with practice and time :D

Thank you!

Love the idea of combining a rhythm game with a top down shooter, lots of potential for the idea to be expanded here!

Developer

Thank you! Honestly I've gotten so many good ideas from the feedback people have given, so this might be expanded in the future.

For rhythm game, highliting the rhythm more visually could work. I had hard time to know when to shoot and in the end option to just spam shooting worked as well as my rhythm skills.

But that’s my only issue, the combo system added needed depth to the game.

Developer(+1)

I've been getting this feedback a lot and unfortunately it kind of doesn't really match my vision for the game I guess - a more visual system would prevent people from really getting a feel of the song's beat and bpm - but I understand the frustration I guess.

The enemies do bob on the beat, though, if that helps at all. Obviously the level of difficulty I found ideal doesn't work for everyone.

I found it fun to keep trying on this one, and got the hang of it on the first track, but didn't fully understand how it worked for brittle mountain -- was it it on the tempo or the notes for that part ?and are the enemy movement / animation cycles hints towards those? =o  great work regardless, just was curious on those as tips for next play through =]

Developer

It's the rhythm, not the notes, for all of them... I wanted to avoid having to explicitly cue things so I didn't want to make people have to guess. And yes, the animation of the enemies outlines the rhythm!

Love a rhythm game, get to flex my music skills! Managed to get to 1759, but was defeated by Mt Chilli's Pot unfortunately!

Developer(+1)

Wow, great job! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Thank you for your review!

I'm naturally bad at rhythm games and sucked at this one pretty badly too. But once it clicked, it was so satisfying to one-shot purple snouts especially once it gets too many of them and they are closing in
🐽🐽🐽🐽🐽 ☀️🔫

Developer

I was hoping it'd be satisfying...

Thank you for your kind words :)

Developer

Also, very funny you thought of them as snouts! That was definitely not the intention.

hmm okay. so I think mechnically it was working fine. Once you figured out the song sound i felt the games enjoyment immediately fell off. I think a good addition to add would be after song loops x amount of times change the song change the bpm. or introduce new enemies each new song with faster or drasticallyt different bpm. that would allow for more intensity and more player panic as these tower defense games are simple already and need more interaction.

UI could def use some more work here. it was fine since it was a jam but you could improve on making more consistent ui text and overall buttons etc.
i think the song wasnt as annoying to play to but longer i heard it the more i wanted to stop.

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

I see... you can switch songs on the fly, as long as you've unlocked them. I thought about adding unique enemies to each one, and I think I will in a potential post-jam edit. Did you end up seeing all 4 songs? If not, I think that's what you'd be looking for. If you saw them, then I think I understand what you mean.

The UI was very much thrown together.

Thank you for your criticism!

hmm no ill try again in a few minutes. the first song was just enough looping for me lol. tbf these genre of games are not my forte

Submitted

update okay i got to the other songs. i still stand there needed to be more to do besides shooting stuff.

Developer(+1)

You're probably right. I'm a fan of these keep the beat style games so I didn't really even think about that.

I'll probably try something out after the jam ends! Thank you still :)

Submitted

ofc. yeah my wife is a big fan of like those beat games like uhh taiko no suijin aka maser of the drums. but she liked it for a bit.

Developer

I haven't played that one yet! I've played an equivalent game on Osu! though

Submitted

Nice job! Very fun to build up a combo when you lock into the beat!

Developer

Thank you! Loved your game as well :)

Submitted

I have AWFUL rhythm so I was very bad at this game but you did a great job !

Developer

Thank you! I'm sorry it was too hard 🥲

Submitted

Don’t be sorry !!

Submitted

Hi there! As a person who has never really played rhythm games, it was really hard to identify the underlying beat, even with the enemies bopping to it! I wish there was a better visual cue, or a way to reduce the music on top for it as a setting. However, I love that you created your own music and your own animations and sprites for the game! It makes me super happy to see people being creative with their own styles! Best of luck!  ( •̀ ω •́ )✧

Developer

Thank you! Im sorry it was too difficult... finding the rhythm of the music is kind of integral to the game, but I think I will probably add a count-in at the beginning.

This game is hella addicting! At first I was really REALLY struggling with having to move using my trackpad and it took a while to get used to but after getting shots, and bopping to the music it was all good! Love the concept and art <3

Developer

Thank you so much! I can't imagine playing with a trackpad though... good on you!
