How does your game fit the theme?
iKNOTulation is about drawing topological knots, In the mathematical field of KnotTheory, a knot may be definied as a loop which crosses over itself in a way that cannot be undone without cutting the loop.

I like the maths aspect to the game! Very unique take on the theme, and I like the graphics. Nice job!

Nice idea! The mechanic is very cool and can be expanded into something deep. I love drawing pentagrams. Good game!

My brain size increased by 3,14159265%, and yet, I still can't wrap my head around it...

Developer

Make sure your line ends close to where it began (you'll see a circle light up around the area you'll affect) and try stuff - paying attention to the crossing counter above your mouse

Sorry that was a pun x)

I've played for a bit but as the number of cells to kill kept increasing I assumed that there was no end.

Very neat takes on the theme, very polished and nice humour. I had fun, good job to the team!

I'm so autistic oops. The writers basically modelled Phoebe's dialogue on me so i dunno if you could have guessed 😅

trauma centre but MATH!

Developer

I hope this is a positive reference, I'm not familiar.

Submitted(+1)

Trauma centre is fun. Half visual novel/half surgery game, same kind of perspective. Congrats a good jam!

Incredibly well made with a neat take on the theme. I don't know if this is intentional, but I noticed you can sorta cheat by drawing a huge circle and then crossing some edges to get the "knot/crossing count" needed.

Developer

It's intentional, crossing count is the only thing that matters, Phoebe's tutorial is only meant to show examples of knots that will work.

The mass enemy kill sound is really satisfying. I also love the clarity in the player's action before they let go - the number, the area, all conveyed clearly.

Loved the game and the characters! The gameplay was also super satifying, especially when getting multiple viruses at once in the more complete knots. Awesome work!

This game solved my main problem with "draw a shape" games. Before I release the left mouse button, I know will game recognize cercle, how big it will be and how many intersection in it. 0 frustration.
Great design, great art

Impressed with how much you were able to put in this game in such a short amount of time! Great job!

I was drawing the most random shapes, and yet the game was an absolute blast to play!

The gameplay mechanics of drawing knots and having viruses die on specific amounts of knot crossings go together very nicely while also creating unique gameplay and fitting the jam's theme. The visuals are well made and detailed while also clearly communicating information to the player. The sound effects make the viruses feel very satisfying to kill while the music is relaxing to listen to. Finally, the dialogue between the 2 characters served as a nice bonus to the main gameplay. Overall, very well done! 👍

Such a cool (and nerdy) concept. I like it! I was really bad at drawing trefoils, though. :D Kudos for such a "technical" game.

Submitted(+1)

Genuinely impressed by putting such thing as a game! Awesome idea! Love the art and the goofiness of some dialogues

I'm must admit I like math so it was a pleasant suprise to see a game about topology. I never saw knot theory mentioned in a video game before.

By playing I learned how to form a a trefoil and a figure-of-eight, so congrats it was nice learning something new!

Concerning the game itself, I did have a slight bug where the tutorial repeated itself, and tutorials could overlap each other if I met the objective before finishing the current dialogue. But I really enjoyed the tutorialisation with the narration, and also enjoyed the visuals and feedbacks of making loops with intersections.

Great job I had a good time!

Developer

Yeah the tutorial repeats itself when the waves reset to the beginning, it's all just one "!" where it shouldn't be, been ironing out kinks like that in between rating submissions for a post-jam update.

"you'll NEVER take me alive math nerds!!! NEVER!!!!" I say as I get taken kicking and screaming into the topology dimension

the presentation is stellar, but in particular, the character design was especially charming. i really like the dialogue between all them as the knots were explained.

This is a gem. I was playing it for very long, experimenting with lines and shapes, going with my gut-feeling of with what might work... and it rewards you for it. The audio+visuals matches the gameplay very well too. Great job!

I can't believe you're tricking me in learning knot theory

The concept is super cool and creative, I doubt I'll find a lot of people that managed to come up with topology as a theme for this jam.

The UX works really well, the loop trying to auto complete and showing all points that would add a knot makes learning the mechanics behind it pretty easy.

I was afraid I would be stuck when the 7's started showing up and there were no more knot fun facts (tutorials) but knowing you need the 8 figure for evens made it pretty easy to find all numbers I needed on the fly after getting into it

(with only slighlty different theming, this mechanic also would work as a good way to draw spell circles lmao, its very satisfying)

Developer(+1)

Funny you should say that, because a Pythagorean wizard using knots to cast spells was one of the first visual/narrative ideas we had for the knot drawing premise - so much that Phoebe and Tau are supposed to still be sorta "magical scientists" even if that doesn't come through too clearly in the designs (what else can you do when you're designing and drawing them at the end of a last day sprint?).

Another submission that reminds me a lot of Pokémon Ranger and I love it, hahaha, great work! The Visual Novel-esque conversations are brilliantly implemented, even with an auto and skip button. Nice change of pace, as the “Run Game” button has been changed to “Run Experiment” :D

I'm a math and a surface-level topological nerd, so I love figuring out knots as well as math games so this game does activate the neurons for me! The art is charming, particularly the characters!  Gameplaywise, I did somehow find a few bugs (somehow got a virus to escape containment?!), but none that detract from the game's feel or enjoyment. I admit though, I did lose the game by leaving it on to read the idle easter egg dialogues, but it was worth it! Congrats on making the game!

Fun technic of destroying viruses. I also like the narrative, kinda unusual

Submitted(+1)

I love the idea of making a loop intersect with itself to clear the viruses. Once I got the hang of drawing the loops, it was super satisfying drawing the knots and figuring out which knot is needed for each virus. A very cool concept!
