Liked the game overall, but I agree with other comments that there should be a way to tell which "power up" you got after you ate the apple haha. Also, loved the animations! Nice submission!

A very fun game! I really liked the level select menu actually, the different effects are fun - although I'm worried how accessible this is for color blind people. Jumping with w also felt very unnatural, I'd prefer space for jumping and eating with maybe e, or just allow changing keybinds.

That aside, the gameplay and graphics are great! The sound design is also very fun

Developer

Thanks a lot for playing our game! We’ll definitely take more in count these accessibility features! Same for the control we learned our lessons ahahahah

This was a really fun game! The audio was a highlight for me, I really enjoyed hearing the dialogue sounds! The different apples affecting your moveset also complemented the level design so well, especially when trying to figure out how to beat each one with all 3 apples! It would be useful to know what consuming apples do at first, since I had a hard time at the beginning. Overall though, I had a really great time with this game from start to finish!

thanks a lot! We would definitely do it differently now we received all this great feedback, indeed the Apple effects are not obvious at all, I’m glad you liked my audio and our game!

Really fun game here! The core mechanic of eating the apples to get different abilities is really cool. I also loved how goofy the sound design was; it honestly reminded me a bit of the fun sound design from Yoshi's Story on N64. I think a sound effect for when the player gets hit would be really nice to have, just so it's a little bit easier to tell when a player gets hit.

Nicely done!

Thanks for playing our game! Yeah I was reaching for a goofy and simple sound design I’m glad you liked it!

Like others, it took me a second to figure out what was going on, but a really solid entry. I loved the biting animation.

Very fun take on the theme! Communicating the effects of the apple could really help reduce friction for the player.

Nice take on the team and also the puzzle mechanics is fun once you get to know the effects of the apple being eaten

Haha this is dark! I liked the different powers, very creative.

I really like the creative jump mechanics especially the reverse gravity jump. The librarian lady was really tough and annoying :D but other than that its a really cool game :)

Very solid first game.

But, to be honest, I gave up after failing 15th time and having to listen same intro. Took me a while to notice that other apple changes way jump works. Af first, I guessed that since one apple makes you small, so other would make you big. But, since it didnt - it should make you normal size. Tried getting somewhere as small apple for few too many times.

Took another 3-5 tries to get to end of first level. Since camera can’t zoom out, I was only hoping to guess where top spikes are.

So, few tips for future projects:

  1. Make effects more explicit. Make sure that player that looks at apples that you can eat have some way of predicting what power will it result. Maybe design of those apples, maybe objects next to it. Maybe effect of apple would be more guessable, if there’s other apple next to it, that player knows effect of.

Unless you wanted to go puzzle way and player will have to remember all types of apples.

  1. If you can’t show player full path - give them anchors. You almost got it with area you had to jump over (2nd after broom), but imagine if player could walk right into wall, “jump” and get to safe space without moving. This way player can be sure what exact place they should jump from and should they move or not.

  2. Skip full dialog option. Specially if you plan to make player start from same place multiple times.

OR

Start game loop after initial dialog is over. So player will listen it for sure once, but every restart will start after dialog ended.

Again, VERY solid first game. Maybe just not my type of game, that happens too.

Yeah, our goal was definitely to mix platformer and puzzle game mechanics. But yeah, we probably should've spent more time refining the look of each apple so their effects were clearer. Thanks for the super helpful feedback!

A fun game. I got all of the apples on all of the levels, although level 4 only shows 1 apple. It was very devious to have the slippery ice power past the librarian.

Developer

Guilty as charged. I have to admit I found it really funny to imagine players facing that level with the ice apple. I'm a bit ashamed, haha

Fun game, I first didn't get the power from apple colors but once you get it's really nice :)

Fun game. I really like the art and the animation of the cannibal apple taking a chomp out of someone. As a nitpick,I think the game would benefit from telling you what each apple does, or atleast letting you solve a room with 1 powerup at a time until you understand their uses well. Also that level select screen is very creative. Good Job!

I like the presentation of everything but the main character is a little psychotic. I think the kirby-esque mechanic is interesting, but I got stuck at the second level. I felt like I was missing a mechanic.

Developer

Hey, thanks for your comment! For the design of the main character, we thought it would be funny to create a contrast between this psychotic character and a cute world!

Very interesting and well impemented mechanics. Hard to understand at first what each apple does but once goofing around its easy to follow. The controls could be smoother but thats just my opinion. I also loved the level selection screen. Great work!

Interesting take on "bad apple". It worked well for the theme.  The puzzles were nicely done for figuring out with trial and error. It would have been nice if the menu also used the keyboard, as everything else used it. Otherwise something on the screen should indicate to use the mouse.

Fun game, I think I've played a few games this jam that used this eat power up type of mechanic but you all have somewhat different takes on it.

The look of the game is cohesive and the level select screen being falling apples is a nice touch.

I also enjoy the little narrative you put in the game as well and using the final battle to test what you've learnt so far, great job.

Congrats on your first game jam game!!

Was an interesting and fun game when I figured out what worked. There were many tedious points where you had to just trial and error to find the path forward then take 10 seconds to reset and go through the dialogue again.

I loved the SFX of the worm in the boss fight lol

Since you asked for feedback: I think it would be better to introduce the player to one powerup at a time. Design your levels around each power up. then more complicated levels with multiple powers. this teaches the player how to play slowly. The first level didn't need the shrinking apple. Some indicator that you are powered up would be nice as well. The first time i ate the gravity apple i didn't know anything happened, so i went and ate the smaller apple and got stuck for a bit.

Really nice idea on the menu with the apple falling, great detail! Congrats on your first game jam, nice job!!

Developer

Thank you so much for your feedback! It’s true that we didn’t realize soon enough how hard it was for players to understand what bonuses the apples gave. It probably deserved a bit more time and attention!

I love the graphics, sound and music. Very ingenious use of abilities. I managed to eat the king apple.

The 3-jumps ability is very hit or miss, so it could be more polished and easier to control.

For a first jam well done!
