Theme incorporation
The theme implemented is a heist. I mixed the heist idea with the chicken parameter and got an idea of stealing eggs from a chicken coup.

I really liked the size of the time window during which player input was accepted as on beat in the rhythm fight. It’s something that’s very hard to get right in my experience playing jam games in general.
Unfortunately the movement controller is quite buggy, doing half steps, and making me get stuck in walls needing to restart the game. There were also some weird things going on with the floor while turning and moving.
The fight also, and perhaps more problematically had a bug that made some of the direction instructions invisible. Which made me have to guess at when and what direction to press. This made it impossible to get past the last battle.
I also didn’t fully understand the logic of the egg meter / health? in the top left corner. It seemed to load into an arbitrary start value, not reflecting what I had at the end of the previous level. And when I died in the last fight and the last level reloaded, I had a different start value than the first time I entered that level.

Another rhythm entry! Lots of chicken puns! Not terrible overall but needs some work. The concept is good and silly and I'm finding myself liking rhythm games now (I need to play some old commercial ones I gave up on!), but needs a good bit of elbow grease to squash the bugs.
The movement felt like half-stepping, you'll see in my video I point out you see the corner of a wall and feel like one stop forward should allow you to get past it, but you are not which is a bit awkward. The rhythm combat is a good idea, but it doesn't seem to actually line up with the beat of the music and it's the same song every time with harder speeds. Some of the button presses for the challenge bug out and are invisible, causing a missed note. The missed note threshold was a bit inconsistent as well. I also got off grid and out of bounds as well you will see in the video.
I hope to see this one polished up with a post jam release. Gameplay below
Idea sound good but the bugs are game breaking such getting stuck in the walls and combat was breaking if was not in the right location for the start of the fight. I think game could be be good with the idea of it but need more work as the bugs are off puting
A fun idea for how to combine a rhythm game with a dungeon crawler. There were a few bugs, but I saw and enjoyed what you were going for.
I like the concept, but I was hit with bugs too. For some reason the arrows were turning invisible. I had to just spam every button to get through the game. Thankfully there was no penalty or input delay for pressing the wrong button.
That aside, if you try a style like this in the future, its very important the the arrows are on beat.
I took two steps and got stuck in the wall. The tiles are a bit to small and makes you stop facing a corner, which is not what you want in a tilebased crawler.
The combat works breaks if you are not facing the enemt when it starts. I was missaligned and couldnt fight the enemy since the arrows never entered the hit area.
The combat system itself is a good choice, but it has to be tuned a bit and be balanced and consequent.
Keep at it!
Great start! I included it in my compilation video series of all of the games from the Dungeon Crawler Jam.
awesome! Thank you.
Hey, nice rhythm crawler, I quite liked the battle portion of it!
I’ve encountered a couple of bugs: sometimes directions in the battle will show up only for a frame and then you have to guess when you need to press the button and what button to press. It wasn’t happening that often, but it happened several times.
Another bug I’ve encountered was related to the FOV of the game. As it’s quite narrow I mistakenly tried to walk into a corner of the corridor and got stuck there.
But other than that it’s a short and nice dungeon crawler which I’ve enjoyed completing, well done!
thanks so much for your comments. This is my first go at a jam so all the support and understanding is really awesome.
Good news, I was able to play it after all!
I could start it with
-screen-fullscreen 0 -screen-width 1920 -screen-height 1080and then it ran like a charm!Right off the bat, or chicken, as it stands, I love the chicken cultist in the title, I want a plushy of it.
On to the gameplay, I think the star of the show is the rhythm portion. My favorite thing about it, which I’ve not seen done in other rhythm games, or at least not in the ones I’ve played, is that you highlighted in two ways when I should make a move: once by having the arrow center on the shield/target, and the other is highlighting it red. Thank you. I love rhythm games but I’m bad at them because I can’t always tell exactly when I’m supposed to hit the key. This removed the ambiguity and made it really fun.
I only wish there were more songs, or at least longer ones. By the time I got to the end (I promise I won’t post on chickentok :D), I was ready for more.
I also really like the the humor and all the egg puns.
Well done :)
Oh, I'm so glad you were able to play it. I appreciate all of your great feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I do plan on expanding it. I made the hitbox for the inputs pretty large and didn't punish the player for pressing a key outside of the right moment just for simplicity. I didn't want the players to get frustrated so I decided to keep it simple. I do plan on expanding on the idea and making the loop a little more challenging.
I like the environment and wall textures. However I think mixing the very crisp high res textures with the very blocky low res sprites does not match all to well but that is of course a matter of personal preference.
I had to restart quite often (which I dont mind) because I got stuck in a wall or even got out of the level, it is a common problem when just using single raycasts for collision detection.
You should turn the player towards the target when entering the dance phase, I had some occasions where was supposed to see the rhythm but was facing another direction leading to an lose.
Looking forward to a more bugfixed version!
Yeah, first time ever participating in a game jam so most things probably took me a lot longer than they would require with more experience. Nonetheless, I had a lot of fun. Thanks for playing and I do plan on polishing it, for sure.
I didn’t leave a rating because I couldn’t play the game, and you shouldn’t be penalized for that. Unfortunately, it seems that it stretches out for non 16:9 resolutions. This is what I see. It’s really unfortunate because I was looking forward to this one.
oh man! I’m sorry about that. I’ll see if that’s something I can solve in the future. Thanks for not holding it against me.
I promise I won't upload the fights on Chickentok.
The rythm game is fun and so the game is fun.
Is it intentional that the arrow keys to the right disappear as they appear though? It's eventually fine especially as the game allows to mash the button but it's disturbing at first, I died a few times before understanding what happened. You must be very careful not to walk into a wall or you can't come back from wriggling. Finally the steps are far smaller than I like, I would prefer if they were at least twice bigger, especially as movement is also quite rigid.
Once again I enjoyed the game anyway, thanks for sharing.
I tried to avoid over complicating the rhythm portion because I wanted to make sure people could get through it despite not having clear instructions. So the being able to mash is intentional for now. Lol. Sorry for all the bugs and thanks for playing. 😊
oh and the arrows disappearing is not intentional. I have to fix that.
Hi, I don't know if it's a false positive on my side, but I got a malware alert while trying to extract your game's files:

You should check your PC.
I'm not sure how that happened. I will check.
Cool game. Small bug when I started, took one step then turned and took another and got stuck in the wall. Also wasn’t sure how to battle the rhythm part of the game but well done overall!
Yeah, it ended up pretty buggy. Sorry bout that.
