Description
This is my submission to OST Composing Jam: Crunchtime 04! Hope you guys enjoy listening to it.
The game I imagined is as follows:
In this game you play as May (the person in the picture), a girl who has the ability to turn transparent when in contact with intense light. For most of her life, May has been been held captive by researchers who want to study her abnormal condition. Throughout the years she has come up with a plan to escape the research facility, and now that she's grown it's time to give it a shot. Time to obtain freedom.
This is a stealth game called "Now You See May" (pun intended)
You would go through various levels which would represent rooms of the research facility, and you'd use May's ability to hide from researchers so they don't find you're trying to escape. Ideally there would be some very bright spots in rooms which you would need to take advantage of to be able to turn invisible, and maybe even a limited amount of mirrors you could use to reflect that light somewhere else as well, but the rooms would generally be dark.
THE SONGS, IN ORDER:
--- Now You See Me
This would play during the first levels of the game, it's supposed to express uncertainty and confusion to reflect how May is not entirely confident her plan will work, but also some slight hope to reflect her optimist side.
--- Now You Don't
This would play during the final levels of the game. The researchers have found out that May is trying to escape and now security is tighter than ever, but it's too late now, May is almost free, and nothing will stop her. I thought this piece should represent how confident May is now that she can break free, I tried to make it very full of hope but also badass.
Wish I could have made like two songs more for this but my weekend was kinda busy

Message from the artist
As always any feedback is greatly appreciated!! Thanks for listening
Theme

How does it fit the theme?
When I saw the theme image along with the word freedom I thought that the girl was probably locked in a room against her will, she's locked somewhere and she wants to be free. In the picture then I also saw her arm was a little transluscent and there was an intense light in her arm, so that's where I got the idea for her cool ability.

Yeeey! My favorite Surge!
Dynamic, beautiful, detailed tracks - wow! A small synth in the right ear? Give me two! Powerful slightly bitcrush drum rims? Give me three!
In general - nice, groove, fun! Thank you!
P.S. rAWR
I loved these tracks!! I was groovin the whole time i love the high energy, it really captures the feeling of freedom really well. I'm especially a fan of all of the synth choices, they all fit together super nicely. The progressions in both tracks are super interesting too! Quality of production and mixing were fantastic as well, im super impressed! Great work :)
Really fun and groovy feel throughout!
I think the only thing stuck out to me while listening, was that in Now You Don't you could've had parts without the little arp figure, since it's pretty bright so it got a bit repetitive feeling on the latter half after hearing constantly (this might just be a subjective thing for me 😅)
Good stuff!
Yooo, it's you, the Cakewalk bopper behind "Stratus" the other jam. Glad to see you again.
This time I felt like you interpreted the themes in an awesome way, I loved the time signature work (like in Stratus) and the vibes of the songs or whatnot. But at the same time i felt like some parts are a bit grating in both songs, and things can be hard to make out. Don't take that seriously please because it's way better than what I can do right now.
tysm for your feedback! don't put yourself down like that though, I listened to your entry and thought it was very fun and good composition and quality wise. In any way, I appreciate feedback regardless of who's giving it, so thank you again I'll take it into account :) (whether you want me to or not)
Super cool track, I enjoyed the funky bass alot and the rythms section was very well done, its nice to listen to some different rythmic variations, good job :)
Very solid, the music correlates well with the theme of the game, I got that feeling of hope and power on the second track.
Loving the choice of patches and voicings in Now You See Me - as you've noted yourself, it captures a kind of uncertainty. Seeing someone but they're always just slipping out of sight so you're hurrying to keep up and keep them in your sights. Percussion in this is nice and straight-forward, and the bass has just enough groove and sauce to it to keep it interesting. Melodies are fun and a little mysterious at times, while the supporting elements in the background do a good job of propping up the mix.
Now You Don't has some wonderful 16-bit vibes to it off the bat. A lot happening melodically here, and I'm noticing some of said elements are panned accordingly to really use up the stereo-space and keep the ears from fatigue. Percussion is more up-beat and faster in this. There is a definite air of confidence and hope in this, with just the right amount of tension to drive those feelings forward. Noticing that the bass moves around a lot more in this and isn't afraid to rest plenty to give some nice motion to the low end.
Great work, these are both solid tracks and work well with the concept and theme. Production is good, no notable mixing issues on my end. Fun listen!
I like the creativity behind the concept of the game and how you interpreted the picture, and the bright energy of this OST, it's really engaging. I'm a bit doubtful though that it would fit a stealth game, where the gameplay is about hiding, being discreet and waiting patiently. It's maybe too colorful for this type of game. Cool OST anyway !
Cool submission and concept !
I like the "cute" vibe of those themes, it really fits with the story you're trying to tell
Favorite of mine is Now you See May, really loved the groove and melodic aspect of it.
Well done !
Love all the creative ideas here, such a great vibe.
The chord movements in Now You See Me were interesting, to me it feels very happy and upbeat like a beach island. That's probably from the movement in the bass going back and forth on the major scale and I'm not sure if it matches the vibe you're describing ((for me)) but I definitely get a sense of confusion and wonder from that movement around 0:46, that goes hard. Stripping back the arrangement at parts to give each melodic idea it's own time in the spotlight could also be a good addition, though I'm just rambling ideas at this point. Great vibes and love the time signature.
Now You Don't goes crazy, I love this. Reminds me a lot of Ghost Trick which is my favorite game of all time and I am legally obligated to tell everyone to play it, so funky. The sax-like solo and those plucks with delay on the left aaaah so good. Everything's great here and any critiques I'd have here would be entirely personal preferences. Amazing stuff. :)
LETS GOOO A FELLOW GHOST TRICK ENJOYER
But for real tysm for your feedback :)
Loved the harmonic movement in Now You See Me. And any song with 7/8 gets +2 in my book (don't ask for a frame of reference for that number I don't have any). And Now You See May has a great energy.
Great work all around!
Awesome stuff, really unique instrumentation but in a great a way. I really love the arpeggios in the second track, really enjoyable listen.
Wow this is really polished! i think the way you interpreted the image is really cool, and im liking the bangers
i'm pleasantly surprised by the upbeat, brighter atmosphere of the tracks you went with for your videogame concept! the combination of realistic and synthetic instruments is always a treat, and it's quite fitting for the setting you brainstormed :3
"Now You See Me"'s 7/8 time signature is GREAT, throws me for a loop as i listen to it. i love how groovy "Now You Don't" is! i'd love to hear the lead instruments a bit more in since they sit very cozily in the mix.
Realllllly sick work. I think it was all the harmonic stuff that I really loved. The way chords moved, how rich and full they were with all the added extensions. Unreal.
oh i love this. the instrumentation evokes digital fusion flavors for me a bit, the optimistic tone makes this such a joy to listen to, and i especially like the 7/8 time signature in the first track. this is really exceptional work!
Oh baby a Fuimals entry! I am already excited going in because your tracks never disappoint!
The second song has an incredible hook! Right from the get go I knew it was gonna go crazy and I was right!
It is appropriately intense while staying upbeat and invigorating!
And then the melody that kicks in around 50 seconds! Beautiful.
I think my only criticism is that the chords in the right ear got a touch grating over time but the song is still a bop.
Very nice tracks I liked them a lot !
The theming with the backstory is very nice (really liked the transparent powers of the protagonist because the image had her arm very bright, pretty well thought out) and the tracks were pretty great too.
I quite liked the asymmetric feel of the first track and the triumphant touch of the second one, fits nicely with the concept and story beats you thought of.
Anyway nice job !
