Description
UNTANKED is inspired by Ecco the Dolphin. The tracks are chiptunes that were composed using milkytracker. Track 1 "Into the Blue" is meant to be the theme of the first level. Track 2 "Predators" is meant to be a theme that plays during an encounter with predators that turns into a chase sequence.

Theme

Freedom
Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
The idea for this game started with the concept of a dolphin escaping from captivity and entering the ocean for the first time, and I tried to capture the sense of wonder that comes with that freedom in the soundtrack (especially track 1.) Track 2 is more emblematic of the perils and thrills that come with freedom, while still holding onto the wonder.

Really love this, it's nice to hear some retro-style tracker music being submitted. Reminds me of some of Dean Evans' work on the SNES (e.g. Waterworld) with those lovely chord samples in the first track. I love all the unique instrument choices throughout too. Nice work!

Wait... that's, uh.

DOLPHINS!?!?!?!?!?!!? BOTTLE PERCUSSION?? WAH!

I loved it...

It feels like something about trackers conjures this ability in people to make the most smooth and interesting chord progressions out there. The pads on Into the Blue just feel so open and mysterious, perfect for the ocean. Predators is a great contrast to the softer first track, though I do feel like some of the oceanic spaciousness was lost (though it came back when the pad was reintroduced). Super cool stuff!

I'm always impressed with good tracker projects, it's like a completely foreign language to me haha. I definitely hear the Ecco the Dolphin inspiration. You did a good job with instrument selection, each one helps me imagine an ocean adventure. I think one cool thing to add would be a lot more sub-heavy instruments in Predator to create a sense of a looming huge threat. Nice work!

i can't pin down what it is in "Predators" specifically, but the interesting melodies with their dissonance really captivate me. i've never played Ecco but i was very excited to imagine some of what i know of the game as i was listening to your work!!

"Into the Blue" is so strong as an underwater theme that has some sense of mystery and uncertainty, fitting for your videogame concept. overall, nicely crafted!! i really wish i could hear even more of what you might've composed for this project. :3c

I used to play Ecco the Dolphin when I was like 6 ! I remember it pretty well, and your OST is a great proposition. I totally get the vibe of the game. It's interesting also that you illustrate freedom as something also dangerous. The second one looses a bit the ocean vibe in my opinion and almost has this urban dissonant beat feeling but maybe that's just me ahah. Good job !

Thats so cool! Nice vibes and great work man! Keep it up! ^w^

It's pleasing to hear something made using a tracker (I use them too mainly openMPT and famitracker). The first track was so relaxing, I wouldn't mind if it was longer. You nailed the 16-bit nature with the transposed pads and the low-bit samples. The second track is a little uneasy and disharmonious, it's still a bit groovy but the drums could have been more present, I still enjoyed it though.

great work, really really love your choice of sounds, they capture your game theme so perfectly. I will say that the melodies are a little reductive in their complexity, your ost really shines when it's leaning on the more atmospheric side

Nice work! Very vibey, love that you're using a tracker!

Oh wow, the feelings that "Into the Blue" evokes are something else. The instrument choice sells that feeling of being submerjed...
And "Predators" is quite funky too, hehe.
(Btw, the animals which kill dolphins the most go by the name "humans", I find it ironic)

I was so excited to see tracker submissions and you did not disappoint AT ALL.

The first song really captured that watery sound

I love that part with the house-ish synths in song 2!

Great job overall, keep making that tracker stuff!!!

I was listening without really watching and I thought it auto went to a different thing because the second track is so distinct from the first one! That's not a bad thing either, just something interesting.

I really liked both tracks. They felt like, weirdly otherworldly which was a vibe!

Developer (1 edit)

haha, yeah I definitely got a bit carried away with track 2 lol. Glad you enjoyed!

OMG this is so cool! What DAW is it that you used for this?

I love the chiptune vibes, there was something so nostalgic about listening to your track while watching the scroller. Super cool work :D

Developer

Thanks! I used Milkytracker.

Ooh a tracker piece! I love the idea of using them but can never quite wrap my head around it.

Before even reading the description, Ecco the Dolphin was the first thing that came to mind. Effortlessly captures that same underwater vibe; a vast open expanse of water, dark depths concealing who knows what. Nails that kind of mystique that came with that game, and I love how it simultaneously feels as though it could function as an early PS1 title, too. Choice of soundscape is great and I really like the use of the water SFX to further sell that ocean vibe.

All in all this made for an enjoyable listen - I think my favorite of the two is Into the Blue, but that latter half of Predators is genuinely super groovy and enjoyable to listen. Bordering on some breakcore sounding pads and progressions at points! Good work.
