Verge of Defeat plays exactly like the title says: you always feel "On the Edge" of dying. (that and we were right on the edge of the project not getting submitted at all :p)

Which diversifiers did you use, if any?
We didn't aim for any, but the "Quick Run" diversifier suits it perfectly

Fun game with a good boss battle. Managed to kill the boss with just one health left. Unavoidable laser damage putting you on the edge of kill or be killed was a fun idea.
thx for playing! also for people who find it difficult (like me) there is an option for dodging the lasers using space to make it better for everyone.
Very nice ! Love the art, it plays very well & just the right amount of challenge without getting too frustrating (which is a very hard balance to get).
Great job !
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Nice job on this one! Enjoyed both the art and the gameplay. For me personally the difficulty was right in the sweet spot. I was able to one shot the game, but barely had any health life left and the final boss was definitely pretty difficult. I like game jam games that are short dense little packages, but this one was almost just a little too short. Probably a testament to how fun it was. Definitely better than having it be too long though in my opinion. Good work!
Thanks for playing! I always take it as a compliment when someone says the game is " just a little too short" xD
Was really quick to pick up and play, only thing that was slightly frustrating was the drones being invincible as they blocked the bullets from hitting the boss. Other then that good job!
Thx for playing!
I really liked the concept of the game and the art is looking fantastic. The music really fits your theme and playing was absolutly fun. The only critique is the difficulty. It was really hard to doge the laser(second drones) and resetting the live in a new scene would have been great. All in all a really polished and fun game!Great work!
If you did not know you can dodge when pressing space, which allows you too well dodge the lasers, unfortunaly I did not have time to animate the dodge so it might seem like you are not doing anything
Also, many thx for the compiments!
That difficulty curve is REAL! I had a lot of fun playing this, but since the two first phases were so easy, I was a bit too unprepared for the real deal in the final one. That's were I had the most fun, however.
I loved the music, too. The only gripe I have is (besides it being too short) that it took me a while to realise I couldn't hurt the little guys.
I'm glad you liked it! I would've liked to have a more consistent/engaging curve but I was a bit rushed to get it working and playing well.
I agree, the music is awesome thanks to our excellent musician. While I mentioned that the drones were invincible in the story on the game page (if anyone even reads that lol) I think I'll put a note directly below the game because a lot of people seem to be having trouble with them.
I like who smooth the controls were in this. like comments below, its not obvious at the beginning what you're suppose to shoot, and the the drones being invincible doesn't help. But I'd did like the the bullet hell aspect of the drones with the laser and being able to dodge through them. I get that its a computer A.I. boss, but the fact that its stationary allowed me to just hold down the mouse in the same spot and just worry about the laser, which made it easier than expect, not sure if that was the intention or not.
Pixel art and music was very solid.:)
Thx for the comment and I agree we should have explained it a bit more on what you are supposed to shoot, but we did not want it to become too hard hence the stationary boss.
Really nice old school feel, nice solid controlls and nice retro music and sound effects :)
I didn't manage to kill the minions, don't know if that was intentional, and couldn't shoot through the "lasers" which felt a bit odd. but all in all a nice play through.
Yea you cant shoot through lasers or the drones, it is very intentional to make it more unique
I like the pixel art I had to unlock ultra instinct for some of those attack patterns tho. It was fun
always fun to hear that someone like the pixelart!
I didn't understand at first that I was supposed to shoot the big computer mainframe and not the drones, but once I figured that out it was pretty fun. Some of the patterns those drones made were quite difficult to navigate, and I died after getting the final boss to about half HP.
The bosses' designs were cool, and I liked the drones' lasers a lot too. They looked dangerous!
Since you intended for the drones to be immune to the player's attacks, it might have been nice to indicate that in some way. Perhaps a force field flashes when they're hit to show it's being blocked? I'm not sure.
oh thx it is quite a good idea! If we do an update then I should be able to implement it.
But too be honest if we had time to make the tutorial we would have explained it, so sorry about that one.
Fun game! A fun future improvement would be to make the robot monkey laser heads destructible by the laser.
Lol, I'd never think to describe them like that...
