The music and art are great, and I like the general idea of this game. It was a little tricky fighting smaller narwhals without running away and coming back really fast, which I found was an imperfect strategy, but this is a very well-made and polished game otherwise.

Developer

I’m so glad you like the art and music! We have a few ideas for improvements if we plan to release it post-jam. Thank you for playing and rating!

Great game! I liked the idea. I felt the ramp up in difficulty was not as steep and needs to be tweaked, and I also agree with other comments in the sense that you can add more stuff to keep the players engaged (I ended up quitting but didn't lose).

Developer

So glad you like the game and idea! There is certainly room for improvement on multiple front, as is true with most entries to a game jam. I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t finish, and we certainly plan on tweaking difficulty and adding more engaging feature after the jam. Thank you for playing and providing feedback.

is it just me or i the narwhal's movement actually the final mouse position and not the direction of your swipe? kind of makes it hard to control at times, also the random "teleportation/warp" inside of the room make gameplay quite unpredictable at times and somewhat easy to farm endless fish while staying far from other narwhals, when it's consistent and not random.

Otherwise great game and great concept! had fun until i started getting frustrated sometimes for some bs ways of dying ;)

Developer(+2)

That's an interesting question. The controls work by spinning your character towards the end point, then adding the delta between the two points as velocity. So yes, it grabs the distance between the two points and applies it towards the second point.  A better strategy would've been rotating the player in the direction of the anchor. Nice catch!

The game play feels pretty relaxing. Art is fantastic and I like the concept. I think the controls are a little cumbersome on mouse but would work great for mobile. I don't really understand the choice for screen wrapping. If you revisit this maybe add the surface of the water and have the narwhal breach the surface. There could even be rewards for doing so. I think this is a really good start to a game that has a lot of ways to expand upon it. Great work!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback! I agree the mouse controls on desktop are not ideal, and a surface to the water would definitely be a nice addition.  I could see adding some birds too for bonus points 🙂

Nice game, remembers me Ecco The Dolphin I don't know why LOL. When I hit a narwhal's it do some damage?

May you rate my game too?

Developer(+1)

Yeah, hitting narwhals does damage, although we should've found a way to indicate narwhal health.

Submitted(+2)

This game was fun for a bit, the gameplay does get a bit stale after a while so this kind of game would probably play better as a time attack game. It would be great if I could get some responsiveness though, like whether I'm really doing any damage to the narwhals or not you know?

But aside from that the gameplay, art and music is really nice, I love the dither effect too!! (makes it look like some really old retro arcade game!)

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

That's some really good feedback, and I appreciate it, thanks!

I liked the design of the narwhal, I had a problem at the beginning, I could not enter a name because the window to put it closed by itself. The controls are a bit difficult using the mouse, but it looks good for a mobile game.

Developer(+1)

Interesting. The name submission window is a bit odd. It uses playerprefs to load the name and closes itself if it finds values. Clearing your browser's indexeddb might help, but honestly not sure about this one.

Nice game.

1, The control scheme is very hard to master, and top that off with very fast narwhal enemies and you get a very very hard game.

2, The credits don't work.

3, The volume slider only effects the music.

Besides these, nice game.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Addressing your points:

1. The intent was definitely to make an obnoxiously difficult game, and I understand that's not for everyone :)

(although the mouse controls for desktop are a bit iffy)

2. Yeah, didn't have enough time to implement credits, so we put them on the itch page.

3. Yep, definitely true.

Thanks so much for the feedback!

That is really nice concept for the mobile game. Nice and intuitive. Yes, you have the work to do with graphics and gameplay. But I liked it. It's not over difficult.

Developer

I’m glad you enjoyed the game! It is intended for mobile, and if you get the chance to try out the Android APK, it’s a bit more intuitive. What about the graphics and gameplay could be improved?

Thank you for playing!

Interesting idea. I enjoyed trying to get behind the enemies to damage them. Unfortunately, it can be cheesed pretty easily by constantly going in one direction. Since the world wraps around, you can easily avoid fighting the enemies entirely and just collecting a bunch of fish while doing so. In fact, I had so much health after while that when I was done playing, it took like a while 5 minutes to get the enemies to kill me haha. Either way, fun game. Thanks for making it!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Honestly I was hoping someone would play long enough to notice that strategy. All cheeses are valid.
(also, you killed 192 fish and 24 narwhals, just for the record!)

Submitted(+1)

Really cool concept, and I especially love the art! I wish the narwhal was a bit faster though.

Developer

I’m really glad you enjoyed the art! We actually had to limit the max speed the narwhal could move because you could move across the entire map in one swipe, but we’ll keep tuning it after the jam. Thanks for playing and providing feedback!

Submitted(+2)

I've learned that narwhals are bullies. I'm just trying to eat my fish in peace! Fr though  good job, I love the art. I do wish you could somehow see the health of other narwhals. I never knew how many more hits it took to kill them.

Developer

They are a little bit of bullies aren’t they? I’m so glad that you love the art! Along with a UI component for enemy health, we had other features planned, but didn’t have time to implement them as is common in a game jam. Thanks for playing the game and providing feedback.

My 2nd favourite spore game ;) So cool though!

Developer

Haha thank you, Spore is one of our favorite games too!

Submitted(+1)

Amazing game! Loved the art so much. Gameplay was satisfying too (until a pack of 3 narwhall ganged up on me lol) Great job!

Developer

Thanks so much for the feedback, I’m glad you enjoyed the art! It’s definitely difficult but easier once you get the hang of it.

Submitted(+1)

The movement feels smooth, its fun to play, love the art and the music is AWSOME!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback, I’m glad you had fun! c:

It’s great to hear that you like the the art, and I’ll pass the feedback to the musician!

Submitted(+1)

I really like the idea ! Quite intersting gameplay mechanic. the game gets repetetive quite quickly. and the map edges make a wierd glitch in color and in position of other items in world.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! Unfortunately we only had 48 hours to make the game since we had work on the first day, so I understand the lack of depth. The map loops you around to the other side, so that may be why you see the weird color glitch and object positioning.

Submitted(+1)

Nice work. The music is nice and the idea is really good but the movement and the enemy spawning on me right away, makes the game even harder to play but once I got the hang of it, it was really good and enjoyable experience.

Developer

Thank you! I’ll pass the feedback to the musician. There was a bug where the enemies weren’t spawning correctly, it’s been updated to fix this bug. Give it another play if you have the time, and we’ve included an Android APK download, as we were targeting mobile for controls.

(+2)

Creative game! Maybe just bad luck, but every time I started I was attacked by 2+ immediately. Tough learning curve to move. Nice job on the graphics, and I like the option of music control.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks! There is a bug that somehow makes it possible for narwhals to spawn right on top of the player at the start, even though there's specifically logic meant to prevent it :/

Submitted(+2)

The first time I spawns an enemy was immediately attacking me and it took me a moment to realize which narwhal I was. I love the idea, it reminds me of joust, the arcade game. the controls for movement felt a little clunky but worked over all. The art looks nice and the dithering gives a nice scaly look to the fish. the background feels a little visually noisy but not in a way that effects gameplay very much.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback. This idea was actually originally a jousting game, in fact we did consider using ostriches, but decided not to. Appreciate the feedback on movement, we could've done more to make it play nicely on the desktop version. We had mobile in mind when designing the controls. There's a weird bug with enemy spawning on web that makes that possible unfortunately.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! We’ve added a patch for the enemy spawning bug and also released an Android APK. Give the game another play if you have the time, and consider downloading on mobile for a better experience.

I’m the artist, so I’m glad you enjoy the art. I found a really interesting dithering texture when I was creating the fish scales that I ended doing some interesting blending with that I think turned out great. I was going for a kind of underwater wavy dither pattern with the background, is there something you’d change to fix the noisiness?

Submitted(+1)

Nice game! Just found the controls a little bit hard to get used to, but overall very nice idea!

Developer

Thank you! We tried to design the controls for mobile, so it’s a bit weird using a mouse.

Submitted(+1)

Oh I see, that makes sense!

Developer

Hi, just wanted to let you know we’ve fixed some bugs with enemy spawning and added an Android APK download. Give the game another play if you have the time, and consider downloading it for mobile.
