That was a fun experience !

Compared to the intro and the end (both amazing) most of the level is empty and the

gameplay is a bit too generous (which is still much better than the opposite) but the art

and the music are gorgeous, and I a love the cinematic feeling of this sequence !

Pretty intense experience, it felt like going on a rollercoaster ride. Music and graphics are excellent, though I feel conflicted knowing they weren't made by you. Regardless, you did an excellent job at making everything work together. Note sync is spot on but the rhythm element doesn't feel important enough in the gameplay, some ideas to improve that:

  • Scoring or a combo meter as you hit the notes
  • You can only move the ship in rhythm
  • Hitting the note properly gives you a small speed boost

I would recommend looking at Thumper or Kingdom Heart Melody of Memory to get a better idea of what can be done gameplay-wise :) Definitely the most immersive experience I got out of this jam, I'm impressed.

Very promising game! The concept plays off with the gameplay very nicely too! Adding more songs to this would definitely add to the overall experience.

The mood an execution was top notch. I love when a shooter really leans into the music, and unlike alot of other rhythm games this jam the note timing and interaction with them felt really solid. Great build up and tension, and obviously an amazing conclusion.

As others said cinematic is probably the right word here. It would be an amazing intro level. Good integration of the tutorial into the lead up, but it did feel I didn't really NEED to fly the ship, and obviously some more feedback like a 'hit' counter and the like would be nice when you can update it.

For anyone else reading this though, its worth the download size, its an amazing experience for 48 of work.

Brilliant, glad you enjoyed the experience. Spent around 3-4 hours placing those notes by hand(Excluding the 2 spamming sections -- done by code), and another 2-3 hours fiddling with the music syncing and timing offsets. Completely agree with not needed to fly the ship, as there is no consequence(death), flying is actually pointless. Definitely will be adding better feed back when hitting notes, in a future update(4-6 days?) -- it's difficult to balance since you don't want to overpower the music with an annoying beam sound every few milliseconds. Talked about it with @fortythreesam, in the comment section below.

In hind sight, i should of spent an hour or two filtering through the project to remove un-needed assets.  To try reducing the game's file size. Noticed quite a few people dismissed this game purely because of the file size, which is very fascinating.

Anyway, appreciate the feedback.

Looks great. Like the style of asteroids in the begining of the game and model of the ship, visual effects and combination of this elements with the sound. I am not very good at english but your game is fine and have much of creativity in comparsion to other jam games.

Developer

Fantastic, glad you enjoyed the experience. It was an incredible rush to get everything done within the timeframe.

Your English is very good, and easy to understand. Don't worry about it, keep improving each day. You're doing well.

Great graphics and voice acting wow also great game

Developer

Cheers, happy you had a good time. Special thanks to @TheOwenEx for the last minute voice acting. Added so much more depth to the game.

reallly really nice!

love the idea!

and really well done, you guys have made sucha cinematic experince in such a short time!

and I also really love the voice over, nicely done!

my compliments ;)

Developer(+1)

Fantastic, glad you enjoyed the experience. It was such a rush to get everything done on time, yet still missed a few key features like the death mechanic, and better feedback when hitting notes. Bare in mind, this was actually developed by one person. Had to get a voice actor in the last few hours, and he(@TheOwenEx) did an awesome job.

Thank you for the compliments they are very welcome.

Submitted(+1)

wooow, only one person for this is really impressive!!! : (I also work on my own, so I know how that is)

my compliments again, really impressive ;)

Nice art and nice game. The color palette is warm that’s good. The gameplay is nice and it was funny to play.

P.S. It doesn’t launch on Mac, add binaries. I had to play on Windows.

Anyway good job! Keep it up!

Please check my game as well ;)

Developer

Thanks for the heads up, should of used an emulator to check the mac version. Will definitely mend that after voting ends.

Glad you enjoyed it, really hit this one hard -- only slept 3-5 hours in total during the jam. I'm curious, what did you find funny exactly?

Submitted(+1)

I mean it was enjoyable to play :)

Ooh yeah I understand that’s happened in all hackathons or jams ;)

Submitted(+1)

Simply epic! The 'story' was really well done!

Developer

Perfect, that's what i was going for. If only we had one more day, could of refined the experience even more.

Cheers for the comment.

damn this is good

Brilliant, glad you enjoyed it.

Super cool - the ending of the song was so dramatic, made all the more climactic by hammering the notes in time. Great presentation and style of course, Something that might be interesting to experiment with is having the missiles at the bottom that you need to dodge be in lanes, with the player not able to move freely, but hop between them. I felt like I was floating around a lot, and wasn't too sure if I was going to be hit by a missile or not. Could reduce the experience though possibly, so I could see an argument for leaving it as-is.  Impressive game!

Developer(+1)

Interesting, that would allow the player to focus more on the notes. And i agree with not knowing exactly when the missiles will hit, that will be fixed in a future update for sure. Right now those red lanes are calculated based on the missile's distance to the player, so if the player turns sharply they can completely miss and have to circle around. With the floating feel, this will be mended with a smooth follow camera(not attached to the player), and giving the player's ship a random position to move to every few seconds (Within a 1 meter sphere, not effecting our left/right movement). To make it look more like you are actually flying rather than being on a set path.

Thank you for the feedback, everything is appreciated.

Beautiful game. Love the visuals. I like the idea of having to split your attention between hitting the notes and dodging with the ship. Woulda been cool to line up shooting enemies with hitting notes or something for more visual feedback. Also, found that you can just hold J to hit all the notes. I imagine that'd be fixed with the addition of a fail state in the future. Overall, nice job. Thanks for making the game!

Developer (1 edit)

Oh, didn't even notice you could hold it down thanks. The red circle means you missed the note, green for a good sync. Also, when hitting a sync, you actually do shoot the enemy fighters with a blue beam and can kill them, if you miss the note they fire a purple beam at you. Just needed one more day to polish it up, but oh well. (There are a max of 20 enemy fighters, that respawn every 5 seconds that decreases to 1.5 seconds later on -- wish i increased that value, wanted the end segment to swarm the player as the image below shows) Cheers for the feedback, will definitely be adding the fail state for sure and more polish.

Probably one of the most cinematic jam games I’ve ever played lmao. The design and overall experience were great and the sound felt super clean. It would be cool to see more feedback when hitting or missing a note but that’s just a small detail. Great entry!

Developer(+1)

That's good to hear, spent a lot of time on this.
There is audio, but was turned down since it would be annoying hearing a beam shooting every few milliseconds. We could add a camera rumble effect, or add physical damage on the ship perhaps. What do you suggest?

Submitted(+1)

The first thing that comes to mind would be a bigger visual indicator such as text saying miss, good perfect etc or maybe symbols to represent them. I can imagine an audio cue clashing to be fair. Visual damage to the ship would be cool but would be a lot of work I imagine.

Developer(+1)

Visual damage is coming soon for sure, want the ship to be damaged progressively until it breaks apart and explodes. Would there be a more engaging  way than just adding text you think? Animations, particle system, sprite swap, etc? Also what do you mean with a symbol, genuinely curious. Thanks for the feedback.

Submitted(+1)

Yeah text might be too distracting for the rest. By symbols I mean like a green plus or a red minus etc to indicate how close to the note you hit it. I’m sure there are better ways that tie into the idea of the game a lot better though.

Submitted(+2)

I may be biased since I did the voice acting but man that was cool, until the eventual crash but we all know the grind that is a game jam

Developer(+1)

Appreciate  the comment mate. If you don't collect the orange circles you can continue until the every end; get's pretty epic. Pretty annoying that tiny problem ruined the other 2 minutes of gameplay though, spent many hours fine tuning it.

Thanks again for the quick notice. Your voice lines added quite a lot.
