Use of the limitation
In the game we have to evolve the species called Darwins on their path to ascension, but to evolve we need evolution points which we can only gain when the Darwins die, which can be considered a failure to our main purpose while also fueling progress towards the same. Press Enter to open upgrade menu.

Very impressive for a first game. The level generation, AI states, and menus are great. There could be better balance, though. The orange slimes seem more aggressive and primitive than the Darwins. It would’ve been nice to see other Darwin tribes or races instead. The water requirement also felt more unforgiving than the other needs, and I couldn’t find a solution for it as maxed-out stats didn’t seem to help.

Developer

Yeah the balance was a bit off but still thanks for trying out our game :)

I had a good time figuring out when the Darwins could start surviving, and I managed to reach the end (not sure exactly when the Ascend button appeared but I noticed it once everything was maxed out). The execution is well done. I might have added an explanation screen to show what the color bars represented, but it was also fun to figure it out as I played. Good job!

Developer

Thanks!

Aww I love the lil guys! I wish I were better at keeping them alive, haha.

Love the procgen terrain, I’m always afraid to mess with procedural stuff for short jams but it turned out really well here. Great job!

I found the font a touch hard to read when not in fullscreen, but I was still able to use the menus just fine.

Thanks for making this!

Developer

The lil guys are a lil too prone to dying XD. Thanks for playing. Btw credit for the terrain all goes to my friend.

Fun afk game.

I'm a huge fan of proc gen/personalized elements in games, noise based tile worlds specifically are just so charming. I know the progression is mostly based around modifying variables right now, but I'd love to see this get updated with a more advanced ai that builds like a real civilization and keeps track of resources. One thing that comes to mind is a system that generates paths between commonly tread tiles. Overall really unique game and there's a lot here to build off of! Awesome work!

Developer

Thanks for playing our game and yeah there are definitely a lot of ways we could improve this game as this was our first finished game. Maybe I'll come back to this game once I have more skills 😄

I'm going to be as honest as possible here. This is probably the best game of the jam. I'm a huge fan of idle games and God games and this scratches a very particular itch for me. I managed to ascend, and I will say those little idiots deserved every bit of what they got. Great job!

Wow thanks for the kind words. Kudos for completing the game, even I thought some of the later upgrades were too expensive 😅

Love the concept and there was clearly a lot of love put into the generation. Progression definitely felt very slow, but other than that, it was a solid game that really fit the theme :D

This has some dwarf fortress vibes. Watching my silly little friends struggle to survive gives me life. The upgrades keep me going. I like the music, it feels authentic to old-school games.

The game could use a quality-of-life feature like increased simulation speed. But otherwise, a great time.

Developer

Glad you liked it and that's a really good suggestion don't know why it didn't cross my mind

It's kinda like some kind of game of life. Adjust parameters and voíla!

Small ease of use improvement could be made, like add icons to the menu items, make the buttons the whole area clickable, have the descriptions visible at all times and open and close the menu from same key so it's faster.

Nice idle game/simulation.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback, would keep that it mind for the next game :)

Lol the art was really funny xD, good call for the name darwins! I like the aspect that you have to upgrade them each evolution
Though initially I thought there are no controls (then I checked out the actual description), and that makes sense (I have been pressing every button, clicking and never the enter button lol).
I didnt ascend though, it take a bit long time to do, and a bit repetitive! but that maybe just me hehe

Good idea for a nice game!

Developer

Yeah we weren't able to balance some things properly I guess so it might take a bit to ascend. Nevertheless thanks for playing our game :)

little wizard art but the concept was very interesting

Very unique concept, good use of the limitation and it matches the theme (evolution) as well.

Developer

Thanks!

A little hard to understand what's happening at first but then it was fun!

Developer (1 edit)

I'm sorry for that, realising now that I should've explained the how to play better. Thanks for playing.

Submitted(+1)

It was hard to find how to play first, but then it was fun

Developer(+1)

Sorry you had to face that, but thanks for trying out our game!
