Extremely cool, with the simple concept I was originally not expecting anything too interesting, but with the visuals it became a very chaotic experience, the music was also very nice.

Developer

Thanks! Because the mechanics were so simple I was able to spend most of my time on the aesthetic haha. I'd been wanting to test making a game that is synced with music for awhile, so I figured to focus on that aspect and keep the gameplay loop simple.

this was fuckin dope as hell! i'm so excited to listen to your music. this is easily my favorite game of the jam so far. I wanted to do a pong game where you could play against yourself, but i didn't know how to do it (im a noob still), so i loved seeing this. the theme of it was so creative and added such a layer of depth that i never knew pong could have and the music and effects were awesome. so many great little details like the falling asteroids etc.

also I just listened to some of your rap over on youtube and this stuff is cool! i'm impressed and wish good things your way

First off, thank you so much for taking the time to explore my various media.

You can find all of my hip hop content on spotify under the artist name One Flow Man. I am working on a Space Cowboy concept album that I hope to release this year. I also rap in a group named Treestyle which also can be found on spotify. I'd highly recommend checking out our last music video Slowpoke on youtube, it's pretty high effort, we shot in some insane hard to get to locations.

As for other types of music (more similar to what's in the game), I haven't posted much instrumental music anywhere yet. I do have a "collaborative" project called lofi.Cowboy, where a friend and I (TheMedisin) post random music that we don't feel fits with our main projects. I've been thinking about releasing my video game music on there (I create lots of music for games that I probably will never finish lol). I'll probably get to that sometime over the next month. If you liked the soundtrack of this game, then you'll definitely like some of the stuff I want to release on there. I'll post this games soundtrack in that release.

Anyways, thanks again, and definitely keep at it if you want to learn to make games. I wasn't quite sure how to approach the ball physics in this game either and so I just found a Unity tutorial on making a pong game. Their code was kinda buggy though, so I had to fix it up a bit haha.

yeah the soundtrack to this game is the vibe that i'm really digging so im excited to find mroe stuff like this by you!

This was quiet an interesting game! i do enjoy the artstyle used, and has a good amount of juice.

It is quiet epilepsy inducing though, so i kind of quit before i killed myself.

A little food for thought:

  1. The screen size on itch wasnt big enough.
    1. When i started the game, i didnt know what was going on, it was bouncing left and right, and i had no idea what to do, until i made it full screen, and then at that stage, i could see the paddles.
  2. The score inside the eye, was quiet difficult to see, having that not so hidden, would be great.
  3. When the earth appeared, it killed me instantly. went a bit fast.

Those are just my 2cents, but other then that, it was an interesting entry! i did like it :)

Thank you for the feedback!

All nausea experienced while traveling through the cosmos at faster than light speeds is part of the immersion lol. For real though, it is a lot. I eventually got used to it play testing it over and over. Gotta get your space legs I guess haha

I fixed the windowed mode sizing. I apparently broke it for the 2nd time shortly before you played it haha

If I didn't have epilepsy before, I for sure have it now. First perfect rating of the jam thus far. That was an intense experience from moment one and the aesthetic was literally so dope. As I'm writing this review I'm actually wanting to go play it again! The music was so cool too. Did you make it??

Developer(+2)

I'm glad you enjoyed the experience. The music was actually the first thing I made. I'd been considering the idea of this creative work flow where I create a piece of music and then build a game around it for awhile and I figured a game jam was the perfect opportunity to give it a go! It was a lot of fun doing it that way, and has me wanting to explore the world of sound design in games a bit more. The way I coded it is definitely not scalable lol, so I need to take some time to think through a better and more modular/reusable system.

Submitted(+1)

Yeah! I was reading some of your bio stuff and I really like your idea of developing a library of reusable systems. It totally inspired me with my own games to start thinking in those terms as well. What'd you use to make the music?

eyyyy abba dabba doobie, good to see you here too. i totally agree with your comment and review. intense, dope, creative, and fun! :)

This game is absolutely cracked. I was not expecting this. The tone and visuals are great, the music is tight and the syncing of both really pops it off. This is the only game I’ve played from this jam so far that made me laugh out loud. Great stuff and surprisingly difficult! The Earth pong part was unexpected as well and super fun. Love everything about this, stoked for future projects from you.

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Music and gameplay synchronization is something I'm looking forward to taking further in the future!

it's so hard, and it should flicker less, but I like the artstyle and concept which are bot 9/10

Developer

Determining how hard to make something is always such a challenge. I am pretty consistently able to get to the last challenge, and sometimes beat it. I was out of time and couldn't play test that part any further, so ultimately I ended up making the speed of the black hole at the end only a tiny bit faster than the Earth part. I think due to it being bigger though, it is comparable to the playing field being smaller, which also increases difficulty, so in retrospect, maybe I should have left the speed the same as the Earth's.

It's kind of obscure, but in the first part, all of the points you score on yourself end up being the boss' HP at the end. Each time you hit him with the blackhole he loses hp, until he dies, and you win!

In the future it would be neat to code in a little bit of tracking that could relay back to me how far people get on their average play. I might have to set something up to use for that in the future.

Anyways, thanks for playing!

I definitely agree a progress bar would work very well in keeping me engaged. I checked out the video, and I think the fact that I thought the game should have more stages really shows the potential, good job on this on!

Developer

I added a video to the description if you want to see the full playthrough without having to spend hours practicing lol

The presentation is definitely the highlight of the game. The way the game flows from the tutorial/testing stage to the main part of the game is seamless and very well executed. I find it interesting that this game requires no knowledge of the rules to play it since everyone knows how to play Pong. I like how every time the ball hits something, there's some screenshakes and particles that makes it satisfying.

One criticism I can give is that the main menu BGM is too intense for my ears. I would personally prefer to have the screeching toned down a little.

Still, well done on the game!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the detailed feedback! One thing I realized while making this was that I really should learn an audio plug in like FMOD. I foresee myself continuing to incorporate music into my games in a more detailed way. I think it would help me with not only mixing all the volumes well, but also open up new doors for things I can do with music. This project I just slapped together a spaghetti coded event system related to the time elapsed on the song playing, it was easy to implement, but it would never scale well beyond this length of a game haha

I love the visuals and the music. I wish missing with a paddle reset the ball back to the middle, but other than that it was fun to play

Submitted

Banger visual design!

Wish I would have known that you can use the arrow keys as well -- playing two-handed is a much more comfortable experience even if you have to still manually switch paddles.

Also, I wish that dropping the ball on either side would reset the ball position back in the center like standard Pong.

Also liked the "playing for Earth" at the end -- nice touch!

An enjoyable experience. Please fix the missing paddles. 8/10

Developer

Windowed mode was cutting them off, but I think I was able to fix the game page so that won't happen if you wanna take a look now!

Submitted

I thought the game was lovely, but I can’t find my paddle. It seems to be off the screen. Nonetheless I enjoyed the drug trip.

Developer

That's strange! I was having similar issues when not full screened, because the Unity windowed mode was defaulting to a weird resolution and cutting off the sides. I manually overrode it in the embed settings, but it's possible different browsers or devices might have issues still. Did you try full screen?

Submitted(+1)

I was in the randomizer mode, which didn’t let you try full screen. I’ll try again later!

I was using Firefox on Linux/X11.

Developer(+1)

I think I fixed windowed mode just now!

Submitted(+1)

It looks great! I love the setup. Playing pong against yourself is weird but also fun.

Cool game. I liked it
