Nice game !  Really liked the idea & it looks great.

You get overwhelmed by asteroids very fast thought. maybe slow down the spawn rate increase a little bit ?

Also the game started to lag quite a lot when I finished to fill the outter ring. But that might be just me (I played on an old laptop :s )

Appart from that, really great work. It was fun to play :)

Developer

thank you!

.... The turrets don't properly reload once it starts to lag, so uh, yeah. Definitely need to work on that.

I like this TD a lot and hope to see a after-jam version of it.

I would suggest a slower start, like first only one ring and then unlock the second and then the third. Also it would be nice to see the prices for the turrets on the buttom in the center (maybe in green if you can afford it and red if not).

Else I would suggest a better balance between the pricing and asteroid too :)

Developer

Currently planning what's going into the after-jam-version :D

That idea about the ring unlocking is pretty neat. perhaps separate levels, perhaps in level progression.

The different turret prices were a last minute (as in last 30 Minutes) addition, so, uh, yeah. That definitly needs to be improved. Especially if i'd introduce different turret types, or price scaling per slot used on ring or something.

So, thank you! feel free to post any other ideas you have as well.

This game has some solid potential. The ideas and presentation are very solid. I think there’s some balance issues in the game, though.

I think the player should start with a little more money than just $5. Being able to put out only a single turret isn’t really enough, even in the opening part of the game. The station does not have that much health, the laser doesn’t do that much damage, and it can’t cover enough space, even with control over the spin of the rings.

The best I was ever able to manage was three lasers on the outer ring before the station was destroyed, simply because I couldn’t get the ring to spin fast enough.

There was a point where I was able to do better than that, but it was because there seemed to be a bug where the game did not end after the station’s health hit -1. At one point, the screen was almost filled with asteroids all exploding on the station, but it sat at -1. I had plenty of money at that point, though.

Over all, I think this game could be really enjoyable, but I think there needs to be a better balance between money, asteroids, and station health, in my humble opinion. Still… great work for two days! :D

Developer

The "secret" is to wait to place a turret until you see the first astroid, and then be a little lucky with the spawn so that you can manipulate the turret rotation until you get enough credits for the second turret without loosing too much health.

But once you get ahead of the curve, it immediatly becomes to easy and you can fill every slot on the station.

So, yeah, balancing is definitly an issue. In general the entire game is a bit... unwieldy when it comes to the user experience.

Yeah, the "-1" bug was a '==' instead of an '<='.... already fixed on my local copy of the game :D

So, thank you! i do currently evaluate what i can do/fix/add with little effort, and what needs more effort. Plan is to at least adress the balancing issues with the current setup after the jam.

Very nice work! It took me a couple of attempts but I was finally able to outfit the station completely with 1 health remaining. Once that happened nothing even got close.

Developer

Thank you!

Yeah, you don't even need to place anything on the innermost ring for it to become invincible :D

I've always enjoy playing game in this genre and this is no exception.

I love how you assembled the asset, looks really nice and that transition from 3D to "2D" feels really smooth and satisfying! A bit more visual clarity on the turrets will make it even better, perhaps just a glowing outline will do.

The game started of being manageable hard but then it just gets too easy at the end. Having some difficulty scaling will keep it fun for a longer period of time such as adding various types of Asteroid, like rubble pile  (which will break into more parts), metal asteroid (with lots of health), etc or maybe even space ships hahahah. Turrets can have various upgrades too that does each unique effects.  Anyways it's just some ideas that pop up when I was playing, but yeah for a solo game jam, you've did really well!

Overall  it's a very solid game with lots of potential, well done game! Keep it up!

Developer

Thank you!

And thank you for all the ideas. Currently i am compiling a list of ideas, and i hope to put up some sort of roadmap of things i can do with the source code as is, and things that i would want to do and how i'd need to change the source code for that. So, if ya have anything else, feel free to post here!

I love this concept, and it looks gorgeous!

I wish the turrets contrasted a little more with the space station though, it's kinda hard to tell where I've already built.

With a few more enemies and turret types this would be a fantastic game

Developer

Thank you!

Another good point. I should make a list....

Really cool game! Gets you hooked instantly :D

Thanks!

Super cool visuals, I loved the menu and the transitions between 3d and top down. The idea in general is also really interesting and could be expanded greatly by adding a greater variety of towers, maybe some that make rotating the rings even more important. (Of course this was only a jam game with limited time so its no big deal that its missing :) ). The difficulty also falls of very sharply as surviving the first like 20 seconds means you pretty much won the game.

Developer(+1)

Yeah, like the first half a minute where you actually have to adjust the rings is what I wanted it to be.  But being solo this Gamejam meant that i just did not have the time to do more game design beyond that. But it's definitely an entry where I do want to add a few things post jam ... If i can find the time.

Thank you!

Submitted(+1)

Totally understandable and I'm excited for what's coming if you continue to update the game ^_^

Very Interesting tower defence mechanic.

The game becomes playable after the 120s for me, fps drops rapidly with the amount of asteroid spawning.

But I still enjoyed shooting space rocks. : )

Developer

Thank you!

I did not have the time to add more content, so i kinda just filled the game with more asteroids... Which really doesn't accomplish much.

If i come around to add stuff, fewer but different astroids is the plan over just spamming more.

Submitted(+1)

The concept is great, and the 3d transition to 2d looks super cool, but quite quickly you fill all slots with towers and then just watch the asteroids get destroyed.

Developer

thank you!

Most of the values on turret cost, damage, rewards and what not are still the first placeholder values i never had the time to revisit.

Great gameplay!

I liked how simple it is to play the game (I'm a sucker for Tower Defense :P)
The placement of towers is super important at the beginning: failed a few times before getting it right.

Oh and there should be a limit of elements on screen: I got to a point where my computer would slow down since there were SOOO many asteroids coming.

Good job!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

yeah, the beginning having to manage the turret rotation is the part i am most satisfied by how it plays... Then it all just ramps up way to quickly to the top end of filled slots and spawn rate maxing out.

If i add to this, I'll definitely look into more things to slow tower placement down and make positioning relevant for longer.

Edit. Also, big thank you!

The transition from the 3D side view to the top down gameplay is so satisfying!

Developer(+1)

Thank you!

Submitted(+1)

That was super satisfying to play pitty i finished it in like 2 mins could see this being a really cool tower defense game if you expanded it after the jam :)

Developer

Thank you! The code requires some cleanup to work on it efficiently, but i seem to have struck a neat idea. We'll see how much ill do with it.

Submitted(+1)

Haha yeah as to be expected with jam games

Submitted(+1)

Really cool idea - I like tower defence type games, and I love the transition between 3D menu and top-down gameplay! I think that the game needs more balance as its almost impossible at the start. Plus the turrets seem to re-acquire targets based on proximity to the turret as opposed to continuing to attack an asteroid until destruction... I think that you could easily extend this to having more turret options with different effects, and give the player more starting money so that they can at least build a passable defence grid for the start of the game. Good job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you!

The turrets always target the rock closest to the space station itself. Did not have the time to put a proper behavior GUI, so i stuck with what i assumed would be the default. The start definitely requires some luck, most times you take 2 to 3 damage as it is right now.

Though, changing the rotation speed of the rings is an integral part, so i lean more towards making the meteor spawn smarter instead of totally random, so the player is not punished by randomness.

Submitted(+1)

I like how in the beginning the game is a bit more challenging, but then it gets weirdly relaxing when you can just explode everything lol After a while I just stopped to watch for a few minutes. I can see how it could be hard on some computers, but I really liked that you chose 3D assets, the menu looks awesome and the transition when the game starts is really cool too. Good job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you!

Fun fact: the upper and lower ring switch places once you are in the top-down view, so nothing is obstructed. But i liked the menu shot way too much to make that swap permanent, so once you lose, the swap right back before the camera starts panning down.

Submitted(+1)

Spinny shooty space station of death! Really fun first few minutes, but wish there was more to the game once you filled every slot with turrets. Still a solid submission for the jam!

I really liked the transition from the menu to the start of the game in the beginning, that was really cool!

Developer

Thank you!

If you die, the turrets actually stay on the station until you restart, so you see them in the menu shot in between. It was the most fun thing to make in the whole jam :D

I agree, it needs more content to be a proper game, but perhaps ill find the time to continue working on it post ratings.

Submitted(+1)

Loved the presentation of the Port Poly at the start!

Developer

Thanks!

Unfortunately I do not have VR Equipment, so i cannot rate back :/

Submitted(+1)

Kind of glad you are unkillable in the game. Was worrying at the beginning I was missing too much by my health dropping. Once I realized I couldn't die, was able to start dropping turrets in and see what the game had to offer. The destruction was incredibly satisfying, I hope you take this further, would like to see it as a full game

Developer

... it's not a 100% reproducible thing, more of being lucky with the timing of the demise that leads to being invincible :D

Glad you liked it, though it will depend on whether I find the motivation to clean the codebase up as this is on the messier side of the spectrum as i valued sleep over crunch and almost ran out of time.

Submitted(+1)

I filled every spot with a turret and then just watched the thing destroy asteroids for a good 5 minutes, extremely satisfying! Also it was interesting having to change the rings speed a lot at the beginning to cover more space with a few turrets. All in all one of my favorite entries in the jam so far

Developer

The ring turning thing is the core, so if i decide to add more stuff, keeping it relevant for longer even with more turrets would be the primary goal with more additions.

Heh. i guess it has some sort of bubble-wrap-popping effect seeing your turrets shoot down those asteroids?

Thank you!

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

The game is great but completely destroyed my laptop with what looked like 50 asteroids all exploding at the same time every second but apart from that I'm loving the transitions between menus and overall the game is pretty good and tactical!

Developer

Thank you!

Yeah, optimization was the least of my concerns, certainly something that could use a little more love.
