Very nice game! I loved the art and the overall mood (even though it was a bit to dark in my opinion, I got lost pretty often due to the darkness).
I also loved the idea of a 3D typing game, there are some interesting mechanics that might come from it. For instance having some words to type flying around you, or using the perspective to trick the player.
As many others mentioned, it was difficult to get the hang of the controls. I feel like you do not need to control completely the camera with the mouse. It could be as a classic dungeon crawler where only 4 views are possible?
Anyway, overall very nice idea! (Obviously I did not get to the end of the 666 levels).
Hmm, interesting idea about the limited views. I will see how it feels with 45 degree turns (8 views) rather than 4, as being backing into a corner to get furthest away and face the witches is a useful tactic. Or maybe 22.5 degree turns? Worth experimenting anyway.
Anyway, thanks for giving it a go.
I played your game on my stream, but the witches never hurled curses at me for me to type the counter-curse! Not sure what went wrong :(
Thanks for playing it on YouTube. You were so close to the witch that the curses were hitting you pretty much immediately. You need to keep your distance to see the curses coming towards you, as that also gives you time to type in the counter-curse. Also, don't step backwards after entering the room or it's likely to be game over...
If you have time, please give it another go.
Controls made it quite hard
Yeah. One of the perils of doing things at breakneck speed for a jam... I naturally did something that I found worked for me.
I like the graphics . nice game !!!!!!!
Good to hear and thanks for playing.
Nice graphics I liked it. The movement with the mouse was a bit too slow for me. I esp. like the ambient you made there with the lightning and shadows. Well done!
Glad you liked it and thanks for the feedback. Sounds like mouse sensitivity needs to be there in a settings screen...
Rather neat concept and fun idea. I do have to say that the controls could use a wee bit of work, numpad or arrow keys with mouse middle mouse button to turn... And 66 levels...
But from what I've played, was quite decent! The looks, the vibe, the style, really fits well!
So, I toyed with the idea of having 666 levels, but thought that would be a bit too much...
Yes, the controls are a common theme in the feedback here, so I have been giving that a bit of thought. The only thing I can think of is left-click and drag to move, but I have played games that have that mechanic and you end up forever picking up and putting down the mouse, which also interrupts movement.
By the way, the middle-mouse click and drag is how you control the camera in both Blender and the Godot 3D viewport. It just takes a little getting used to.
And thanks for playing and the feedback.
Good presentation, and the concept of a 3D typing game is very compelling. The controls are very difficult to master, but because you need the keyboard to type, it makes sense. What I didn't like is the tutorial being this block of text. Could push some players away. Teaching the game in a small little practical tutorial would've helped a lot! But it's a jam, so it's ok. Awesome entry overall!
Glad you like it and thanks for the feedback.
I will break up the text into some sort of in-game help after the jam. I was concentrating on other things up to the deadline.
Oh! First jam game I've played that's a typing game (like mine).
I like that the controls are a bit odd. It clears up the keyboard for typing and also makes me feel like I'm playing an old school dungeon crawler like Daggerfall. Makes the game a little harder to play but really adds to the atmosphere (which is great btw).
The procedural level generation is very done well too. I didn't notice any joins or big pauses when playing.
The only thing I'd suggest changing is making the "Saving" notification appear in a corner rather than the centre of screen. Its not really something the player needs to be 100% aware of once they trust that there is an autosave system in place.
Daggerfall! That's a blast from the past. I only ever tried that in DOSbox and it ran like a dog. Should maybe give it a go again, now that PCs are a lot faster.
Anyway, glad you liked it. For the "no apparent joins", I simply cheated and pre-loaded all the sections. Before I did that, there was a noticeable bump each time you got to the Devilish Shoppe. The memory footprint is pretty low overall, so pre-loading just helps everything feel smoother.
I put the saving notification in the middle as it appears at a point where it will not interfere with anything happening in the game. But yeah, point taken.
Glad to see that I am not the only one to think of doing a typing game. It just seemed so obvious to me that I thought there would be lots more.
Ah, one big preload is smart.
I like where you've taken the typing game idea though. The counter curses being opposites of "negative" words works so well - its basically training the players to think positively when they see negative words. It would be interesting to see if you could remove the UI for the positive words at a certain point and still have the player type them. I didn't get up into the high levels so apologies if it already does something like this.
Great visuals, music, and atmosphere in this game! Looks like you had the same typing idea as I had in my submission but it is a no-brainer to say your work is way more polished than mine. :P
The controls in the beginning concerned me because I do not have a numpad on my laptop but I’m glad to report that the arrow keys still worked for moving around. :) The font was not the easiest to read but I can see you picked this one for stylistic reasons.
Well done!
Yes, I did think that there would be a few people doing typing games, but it was the first (and only) idea that popped into my head as soon as I saw the Curses theme. My first thought was to try 2D, but I don't have much experience with 2D so just went for it in 3D. I am quite pleased with how far I got, given that doing this for a jam is from a standing start. It would have been even more polished, but I lost a chunk of time to giving myself a crash course in Python for something.
Yes, the font is a style choice. I had a good old rummage before settling on this. Maybe I should have another rummage when I come back to the game after the jam is finished.
Thanks for playing and glad you liked it.
Really scary atmosphere and original idea! The models chosen were very nice looking, the mood was well set, the curse-countercurse mechanic was well executed. I also liked how the witches creepily stand before they see you.
I couldn't make it to level 66 (I accidentally fell into the void, forgot that was a thing!!)
I would've liked a more classic fps control scheme (move camera with the mouse, no press+drag necessary) but I could adapt to this scheme.
It'd be nice to have a pause menu that lets you reread the intro text, as it has a lot of info that the player might forget mid playthrough! (like I did :P)
Cool entry!
Thanks for the feedback. Glad you like it.
Totally agree that it needs an in-game info screen and it's on the list in my head! Great suggestion to re-use the intro text. I will take that on board for whatever comes next.
cool idea, though i struggled a bit with the controls
the graphics were nicely creepy
Thanks for playing and the feedback. I was going for creepy.
On the controls front: When I have been testing, I found the best thing to do is to get into a good position in a room with witches, before they start throwing curses, then stay put while typing the counter-curses, then move around again when all the witches have expired. For example, dive through the door then back off into the nearest corner, then stop moving and use both hands to type the counter-curses. It helps if you can touch-type...
Also, make sure you get all the potions that the witches drop, as you can't go back and collect them later (the room won't be there).
thanks for the tips, I did much better this time, I'm quite impressed with the whole gam
It's heading in the right direction... needs more work once the jam is complely done.
