This was a wonderfully inventive idea, with some great writing and a cool mechanic. I managed to survive until all my peers were dead. I loved the presentation and I loved the writing in the cards.
My one piece of feedback, if you were to take this anywhere, would be to have some kind of change to the cards you get depending on your stats, as this would make it feel like you're moving forward in time.
But yeah, brilliantly dark and fun idea, and I had a lot of fun playing it. Great work!
Aw thanks for the thoughts! I agree with your recommendation, it would def be a good way to keep it feeling like more of a progression as you go. Cheers! :D
The game is dark and philosophical, and I really liked it!
Appreciate it! Thanks :)
This is the most nihilistic game I have ever played. The more I played the more I got the sense my choices didn't actually matter. You try to pick the best choice in life but in the end it's a roll of the dice. Well done.
That's high praise! Thanks so much for playing :)
Damn, the idea worked great!
I didn't outlive everyone, made dumb mistake at then end but still lived 100 years.
I guess it's only missing a bit more choice and balance, but well, game jam game :D.
Fan of the Reign game, fan of yours too, well done!
Thanks! Dumb mistakes are a part of life, right? Appreciate the time you spent :D
I'm not a fan of strategy card game thing, but this game is pretty cooll the graphcs are perfect and good job !
Thanks so much for giving it a play! Cheers! :)
Outlived everyone at 104 :D
This is a really interesting game, life is the ultimate "roll of the dice" and I think you did well coming up with a good game design around that idea (it also reminds me of the "Reigns" series). Now of course it's a jam game but I can see many things to do with that concept, like having "special choices" sometimes that can affect the theme of the next cards until your death (like choosing a career, things like that), not having everyone look the same, or maybe a "lineage" mode where you play the parent first and then depending on how succesful you were, your child will have a headstart or different cards to play. I'm just throwing ideas, your game is quite inspiring :D
Great work !
Thanks so much for your thoughts! I wasn't familiar with the 'Reigns' series before the jam but I am now :) Congratulations on outliving all the old people. Those are some solid suggestions, I really appreciate you taking the time to share!
I like the game! The jokes are funny and the game is pretty dark lmao. It's a bit easy to stay alive but reading the cards is very fun!
Thanks for playing and sharing! :)
I really liked the game! My only suggestion would be as the game progresses, you might tilt the balance more in favour of the bad alternatives if you want to amp up the existential dread considerably. Apart from that great game!
BEST OF LUCK:)
Thanks for playing! It's a good suggestion, given more time I would have done such a thing :)
I really like it, would be cool if card choices affected the card pool though, and maybe if you could see how your peers died haha
Morbid. I love it <3
Congrats on finishing your game! Nicely done.
I commend you for not using actual dice in your game. And it still fits with the randomness that the theme promotes. But you still used the theme in your game name lol
I liked the premise for your game at the start. It was amusing to try and guess which card would benefit me the most, even if some where a little unclear. In such a text heavy game, it might benefit having a proofreader to help with this text as some of them were a bit unclear. I think the game just dragged on a bit too long. A lot of the choices felt like repeats, or had too little impact. I had nearly max stats by around age 25. I decided to just spam click the left most card and made it all the way to age 60. Being able to double my click counts without actually being strategic just reinforced that there isn't a whole lot of variety or high impact cards. In a system like this, I think you may just have needed more time. More than 48 hours unfortunately. Being able to only provide cards with applicable effects to your age range, for example. I was offered "you are a marine biologist" at age 14 which was amusing.
Still, you made a cool thing. And your art was a little unsettling, but that was a great fit for the game.
Overall, well done. Keep making games!
Thanks for playing! You're correct that I was just running out of time writing up the cards, and if I had developed it further, splitting them out by age would have been a thing. You are kinda hitting on the point though, that the unclear results were part of the game - someone once said, life is like a box of chocolates. And then he jumped off a boat, I think.
Pretty funny game, love the style. Solid entry!
Thanks for the kind words! :)
Very neat! Made it all the way to the end on my first try. Some of the cards' effects were surprising, which is pretty much a given for games like this, but much less so than Reigns, and never catastrophic. If you want to really crank up the existential dread, you could balance it more towards negative options as the game goes on...
Thanks! If I did go back through it, I would have weighted the cards towards your current stats and age :) Cheers!
This game was pretty funny, high marks!
Thanks so much! :D
this game seems very random in its mechanics. there's quite a lot of different cards, some of them are quite funny.
Yep, pretty darn random. Thanks for the kind words and for giving it a go :)
Is this one of those art games?
Anyway, it reminds me of the iOS game Reigns but mixed with existential dread. I'm curious, what actually is the logic on determining whether you die? I assume it's a die roll based on age and probably health, but does happiness, intelligence, and money factor in?
I died from being too poor, so money probably factors in. Love the game btw!
Thanks so much :D
You've got it! Age is the highest factor the older you are, the more likely you are to die, but the other four stats do all have an equal impact alongside your age so if you want to make it to the win condition (living longer than the other people), your best chance is to make all those things high as you can. Thanks for playing! :)
