Always nice to see an implementation of a classic board game.

I never heard about the royal game of Ur before, but the game looks simple, yet really interesting. Reminds me of backgammon but with extra twist, since the existence of rosettes calls to place your rocks so you can reach a rosette with one of them, no matter what you roll.

Sound design is interesting, I obviously wish, there was some effect for moving the rocsks, but I really enjoyed the cheering crowd as an audio background (especially the laughs whenever a rock is kicked out - good stuff).

Great game, I hope we can see more implementations of historical games to a digital format.

Great idea and implementation, especially given the time constraints! Though I may be biased since I'm a huge fan of all things Mesopotamian XD

I too watched the British museum video and wanted to try playing this with a friend, so thank you for making this possible :)

I echo other people's suggestions of adding a tutorial. Another small recommendation (even if it's not historically accurate) is to make the rosettes a different color. For new players, it's a bit confusing that those let you roll twice while the other symbols on the board are purely decorative.

Glad you liked it! :)

Another small recommendation (even if it’s not historically accurate) is to make the rosettes a different color.

I had already planned to colour the symbols on the board, but skipped it due to time constraints. But it’s a good idea to make the rosettes stand out a bit more!

I'd also watched that video from the British museum, I can't believe you managed to make a full video game out of it (more so in only two days)! The implementation is really impressive and the graphics and sound are cute. The only downside I can see is that it is a bit complicated to understand for a jam, but it sure is a solid game, congrats.

Developer(+1)

The only downside I can see is that it is a bit complicated to understand for a jam, but it sure is a solid game, congrats.

True, I didn’t had time to make a good tutorial which might be useful for someone who do not know this game in advance. Thanks for playing and the feedback! :)

Thank you for making this game, i saw that video you talk about a couple years ago and set out to make it, but never actually did. I played a little, the audience sound effects could use some improvement and maybe the presentation as well. Playing it alone against yourself is quite weird, but i can see how it'd be hard to make a challenging ai in this short time.  Hope you keep working on it, good idea to use it for the jam and good job.

Developer

Thank you! Yes, the sound effects are not perfect yet. I just grabbed the first best sample I found haha. I’m already digging into board game AIs, it’s a tough topic but lets see if I can make one :)

Always cool to see board games reimplemented as video games, +1 for remaking a classic. Good job :)

Developer

Thank you!

It's probably the first entry in the jam without a visible dice :-D I saw the same video years ago and fell in love with the game for a while so you definitely hit that nostalgic feeling for me and I thoroughly enjoyed playing it (even alone)

The game is a bit rough, I think the first steps to make it more juicy would be to show the dice rolls, add some movement to the pieces and some sound effects, maybe show the saved pieces on the table could be cool.

I also like the tavern atmosphere background and you brought back some memories, good job!

Developer

Thanks for the comment and feedback! I want to include some real rolling dice, but I didn’t have time to figure out the best way to do it. There were some sound effects for rolling the dice and placing the pieces, unfortunately those sounds didn’t export correctly. I’m still not sure why. Thanks again for the feedback, I will put these things on my ToDo list :)

As far as I can tell this is an excellent computer game implementation of this game

Developer

Thanks!

Had never heard about this board game till now! Watched the vid of the trailer you linked in the description, really interesting stuff. Was nice to then play it myself, good job

Developer

Thanks! :)

This is super cool, I really like the idea of porting old (semi-obscure) games to the video game format. Would be very interested to try out an AI mode once it's developed, as playing against yourself isn't quite the same!

Developer

Thanks! I never programmed an AI for a board game so let’s see how long this take but it’s definitely on my ToDo list :D

A very chistorically involved entry! 🧮 ❤️ The implementation is very impressive with display of awailable moves and working 2 player match with changing perspective. Whoaaaa. I know that the game did originally look like that but it might be a good UX idea to mark end destination for both players, for ease of explaining. Loved the TL;DR tho xD

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! You are right, it’s really not a bad idea to add some kind of visual which shows the path and end destination, I’ll add this to my ToDo list :)

I had no other player at hand, but I played a match between two competing strategies (one favouring as many pieces as possible on the board and one more interested in moving the already furthest piece even further), and it was a very close match in the end, with the losing player only having one piece still on the board about 3 tiles from the end.

I think there’s a bug where it says the wrong player won though… brown still had a piece on the board (blue won the game) and it says ‘Player 1 has won!’

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Yes the game is a good mix between strategy and luck. So even with “better” strategy you can still loose in the end if the luck is not on your side.

Didn’t catched that bug yet, thanks! I plan to remove all bugs and add some more modes ones the jam is over :)

I have no idea how to play this game but I like clicking things and big +1 for supporting multiple players too :D

Developer

Yeah a tutorial is missing, on the game page are the rules but I understand people don’t want to read a wall of text :D

HERE TO RNG SEED, NAHT TO REAAAD

(for real though I will read the rules, looked like an interesting game :D)

Interesting, good job

Developer

Thank you!

Oh shit I remember watching about this on youtube amazing that you thought to make it into a board game

Developer(+1)

Thanks :)

Nicely done! One small critique: a sweet music might be better that an ambiant sound. The game is well implemented, I don't understand all the rules yet, but it's interesting!

Developer

Thanks! Yeah, the ambient sound might be a bit annoying over time as it’s just one loop :D It definitely lacks some tutorial, I added the description of the rules on the game page but I understand no one wants to read a bunch of text. Luckily the game shows all possible moves, so it’s playable without knowing what you do haha

Submitted(+1)

It's not really shocking to me for a board game to have to read rules. And your UI showing the moves is useful!
