Fated to Die ranked 44th out of 6142 entrees in the GMTK game jam. The game showed up briefly in the final winner's video, but was not selected by Mark as one of his favorite 20 games. Thank you so much to everyone who voted and said such kind things about the game. This was my first game jam and it was a pretty daunting task to finish this game in 2 days as a lone developer. I will try and get an update out to fix some of the issues in the coming days. Thanks for playing.

Wow, it's an amazing game. Really dig the 80s computer graphics style. I love the atmosphere, got the "good ending" on the first try I suppose, but still got this bittersweet feeling, liked that a lot.
To write a game like this in 48 hours is definitely an achievement. The whole idea is very coherent and engaging. The music and graphics work great together, and the whole thing is reminiscent of old games. BUT! Most of all I like that the whole story is not so "cheap" unambiguous. The place we are visiting has its stories and secrets (I played a few times to check how different choices work). The atmosphere of the game is that, even though the game is finished, it still stays in your head.
Wow just wow... I am not sure where to even begin this review. I guess I will start by saying i loved this game. From the start, the visuals are beautiful, and I mean really beautiful, they must have taken a great deal of time, and I am very impressed. The music is also very good and worked really well with the bell sound that played when the fate timer was filled. As a whole all the sounds worked really well. Really great job on presentation.
Now game play wise is usually where these kind of text based games falter but not this one. For a start, giving the mouse and dice a sound was a really great choice and made the game feel grounded and not floaty, it feels good to play which is impressive. The way you integrated the theme and used the dice also made for a really cool way to experience this game, and having the skull tiles was sheer brilliance, at one point after I stole a gem I debated whether or not to go back the way I came or to climb out the window and risk death. I chose the latter because I was afraid I might get caught with the gem by a guard or something. As I climbed down and the dice rolled I was on the edge of my seat, I cannot overstate how exciting it was. You made a text based game one of the most exciting experiences I have had across the whole jam. When the dice had all settled I had survived and I had found an interesting event that I will say no more about because spoilers but I really like the ending I got ( I actually played 4 times haha and died in 3 of the attempts). Finally there is the fate time, I really liked this because it provided a really interesting choice of risking additional dice to get better choices and possibly getting stuck with a bad one or work with what I had ( the bell tolling when the timer was filled was pretty great as well).
I wish I had feedback for you something i could recommend you improve but I don't. This was a fantastic game, and I am very impressed at how much was done in just 48 hours. Thank you for sharing.
Shiii man this is an amazing entry. The presentation--from the sfx to the art to the music--was incredible and set the tone perfectly. The inclusion of the dice was also extremely creative, especially the fact that there was a punishment for trying to roll too many times. I really don't have anything to add in terms of suggestions, so far, it looks really solid. Easily one of my favourite games I've played so far, definitely going to be playing again^^
DAAMNN this is so good. Honestly one of the most creative games I have played from the gamejam and not to mention the amazing art presentation. I think the dice rolling mechanic could be a bit improved upon butbesides that I had alot of fun playing!
A really cool and well done game. The story and mechanics had me easily immersed within my playthroughs and the narrative experience was great. Minor easily fixable feedback, is that you can currently easily minimize risk and "reset" your time bar by force timing out in no risk decisions by spamming the dice even when no numbers are shown. One of my favorites in the jam!
Yes, these instances are actually a bug. Very late in the development like with 3 hours left I realized that rolling in traversal scenes was a real drag, so I removed the option and just made it so they were "free" zones. This really helped, but for some reason you can still roll in some of them, so I need to put a lock icon and fix anyway players can roll in non decision scenes. Also if you go the chapel and the priest is not there, it will require a roll and its only a move scene, but its supposed to be a free scene. So yes you can in some way exploit the mechanic. But it doesn't gain you all that much unless you are going for the "letter" ending. Because once you pass the door guard, the end game chance structure is not gameable.
So well done! This entry is the most atmospheric one I've tried for sure.
One little point of improvement: Making it more clear how many "slot" the bar on the left has would make the choices I make more informed in terms of risk. Just a suggestion!
Good work and congratulations on finishing the jam!
Very cool entry! Great art and story. Probably the most immersive game I’ve played so far. I really liked how it led me down a different path each time, due to the randomness. I did like the risk with the skull dice, but it sometimes felt like I died a bit cheaply.
Incredible game! One of the best I’ve played.
Very cool game! This is the first text adventure game I played in this jam. The story is really interesting and art is great too. Like this nostalgic style aesthetic. The only suggestion maybe that it will be fun to give player some control on dice rolling for more interesting decision making. Great game!
This was... amazing! The implementation of the theme, the monochrome pixel art, it was nice! The chance a die could roll making you choose a losing option (at least that's what I think happened) was cool too!
I enjoyed this, and will probably revisit to try to find all the paths. Great job!
This game is awesome! Its pretty much perfect for a jam game. There were some occasional errors with the story but for a jam game this exceeds my expectations. Amazing job!
very cool
i really didn't expect to find a story based game with this theme
the mechanic is so unique
the art is great too
and most improtantly the game is very interesting and enjoyable
i think the only thing you should maybe add is a small in-game tutorial
other than that
you should totally make this a full release, spend a month on it maybe and get it out there
this was definitely one special submission for a 50 hour game jam
and i believe you're the first person i will give 5 stars on creativity
great work!
Holy crap, this game is almost perfect in the 3 categories! :D First off, im kind of a sucker for branching stories like this, so, yeah, this story is great :) Also, i love the art! it kind of reminds me of ASCII art :) Overall, amazing game, great job! :D
Very solid concept and story. Love the aesthetic of the game! Great job!
Story and concept are really solid. The pixel art is great and the game was really good, overall. Nice work!
Incredible artstyle! I spared the king my first playthrough and accidentally killed the priest on my second one lol
