How does your game fit the theme?
Your actions are looped on beat for each bar of the music. It's like editing a drum loop in a music software, but the way you leave the field have consequences that trigger every loop.

Super neat idea, but really difficult! (perhaps the fast enemies are a bit too fast)  I think with some more time to tune difficulty it would be even better!

One thing I will say is that I felt like my mics kept dying randomly, and I couldn't really figure out why. And another small nitpick is the manual calibration. It might be confusing to casual players what it is meant to do, so I think having it be automatic would be even better. Again though, this is a very small nitpick as I didn't add calibration either (I just assumed 100ms of delay).

But overall as a rhythm game enjoyer, this was really fun! Amazing work!

Developer(+1)

Yeah, definitely more playtest would have helped! Thanks for pointing out the difficulty.

And good feedback on the 'dying randomly'. When they become empty of energy they die, it is part of the mechanics, but it lacks feedbacks at the moment. I still don't know how I'll solve this one. Maybe I can just remove it haha, let's see.

And good point on the manual callibration too, I might have to simplify the steps. I still don't get what you mean by 'automatic'. It is theoretically impossible to get the exact delay of a player's full PC setup. But there are some techniques like making this adjustment under the hood while the player is playing something, which is a good path, but requires a lot of work to get right too. It might be worth, though, if I keep working on the project. Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks a lot for playing and the time to give your constructive feedback!

Hi! What I meant by automatic calibration, would be to do something like what osu and ADOFAI does. I assume they get the delay of each input, and then average it to get a pretty close estimate to the delay of the PC.

Congrats on the high audio score!

Developer(+1)

Thanks!

Oh, nice, I get it then. Like: "Keep tapping to calibrate" and then I adjust things under the hood. You're absolutely right, this would be a great solution

Submitted

Yeah, I think ADOFAI does it the best. If there's too much variance in your inputs it won't take it and will make you recalibrate again, or if you didn't tap enough it would make you do it again. Would be a good thing to mimic if you decide to further develop this game!

Awesome job! Really fantastic execution of a clever idea. I love seeing music and rhythm mechanics implemented in other genres. The aesthetic is beautifully nostalgic, and I could probably groove to that song on repeat forever.

I appreciate the difficulty, but I think one thing that could help alleviate some frustration would be using a first-in-first-out system instead of first-in-last-out when picking up and placing mics. That way I'd be able to make multiple mic movements on the same pass of the hand. I'd often pick up a second mic to move or to fix only to realize that by picking up a second one I had prevented myself from placing the first where I would have liked.

Overall, though, the frustration was minor and the enjoyment was through the roof! Definitely an entry to be proud of. And thanks for your feedback on Rhythm Rail!

Developer

Hi, thanks for the time and feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed the game overall!

The first version was actually FIFO, and I decided to change. I guess both FIFO and FILO lead to frustration, making me think there should be an extra verb you could do, like a second button to place the second on the line? I still don't have the answer. Many of the complaints talk about the lack of agency the core mechanic brings to a strategy game, which is usually not great. Thanks a lot for pointing that out! If I keep working on the game this will probably be the first aspect to try stuff and playtest.

  • I wish I could have more control over the “[space]” hand
    • I felt more frustration than satisfaction when I needed to swap the mic around
  • I wish I had control of volume

Hey Vhoyer. Just watched the video. Thanks for the valuable feedback

Yeah, the frustration of having to wait for the next loop is kind of a cursed problem that came from the core design. I did anticipate but did not find time to design a solution and implement. The three ghost lanes could be a great simplification! Also, I think the level itself could be easier, (including the energy economics, making the mic break by itself a less often event) I didn't have a lot of time for playtesting the difficulty :( maybe it is a good learning for the next jam already, reserving even more time to playtest (and maybe find someone else to work with could speed up the development as well haha)

Your video was really really valuable! Thanks a lot for the time and the effort o/

That was fantastic! It took a little bit to understand how it worked, but once it clicked I found this game to be wonderful! I haven't seen a rhythm game that makes management the focus of the mechanics rather than direct action. It was refreshing! It helps a lot that the music and art were a joy to witness as well. Marvelous job, you made something great!

Developer

Wow, thanks a lot! I'm really happy you enjoyed! I too have not seen rhythm games with management elements, so I set out to make one - and I'm so glad you picked up the vision and liked it <3 Thanks for playing and for the compliments!

Really cool game, but quite hard to beat :)

Nice artwork!

Thanks o/

This was super creative! As a rhythm game enjoyer, the music and sound effects work so well together! One of my favourites so far in the game jam!

Developer

Wow, that's so good to hear! <3 So glad you enjoyed! Send to your rhythm game lover friends o/ haha

Really incredible to have this game made during a game jam. It's really hard to make rhythm games, and this one is very well made! I loved the Plants vs. Zombies theme and its super creative approach to the jam's theme.

Developer

Thanks a lot for the compliments! o/ I had a bit of experience making rhythm games beforehand, that helped a LOT

Awesome game. Great idea. Banger soundtrack! Gj :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Yeah, the soundtrack is amazing. Leonardo Lima is a legend haha

He also made the instrument sounds that are played on beat when a mic shouts out a note. They are then randomized and played at the right moment according to the lane

Submitted(+2)

Awesome, really cool game! I love the art style, the beats, the gameplay, it's all great!

Developer

Thanks! I'm really glad you enjoyed! <3

I REALLY NEED A FULL VERSION idk what magice was used to make this but it's so good

Developer

Huuahsuahs yeah, it is being well received! I might work on more content on the future, who knows!

And I did not use magic, just a lot of coffee. Magic would be great though.

Submitted(+2)

A really interesting rhythm game, I had a fun time listening to the music

Developer

Yeah, the soundtrack is a banger from Leonardo Lima. He nailed it

Submitted(+2)

Love rhythm games, this was definitely hard on the mental stack and timing but very rewarding once you get into it!

Developer

Thanks for playing. I hear you! Maybe the pacing of complexity and difficulty could be improved to avoid some frustrations early on

Amazing take on the Tower Defense genre, super creative and groovy! Definitely deserves attention!

Developer

Thanks for the kind words!

Really cool, little bit too fast paced for me to get past the 3rd wave though. I feel like the window to place each singer is a bit too small. But overall really well done and great art style.

Developer

Hi! Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, maybe if a slower song could help new players, specially if they are not used to playing rhythm games. Thanks for your comment and the compliments o/
