you have actually VOICED THE GAME? amazing

as an arcade game it's quite fun! it also gives a lot of life that there are more types of balls that are appearing, very good!

also graphically it's pretty good :) congratulations!

alejandro!! Thank you for the encouraging review, really appreciate it!

Really neat concept! I like that you added a few new types of golf ball as time went on, it was a good way to keep the gameplay feeling new. Good job!

Thanks ghostentity12!!!

Dude this is the most fun I've had playing these games so far. All 5/5 from me. Fun gameplay and nice visuals but the damn sounds are just priceless lol. Convenient little tutorial is a cherry on top. One thing I'm not sure if you intended to do or not is that you can dodge indefinitely which makes just mashing the space button the most efficient way to play. Other than that great job, I hope you make it to the top 1000 or top 100 even!

Developer

Thank you Duck Sized Games!!! Love the specific helpful feedback, definitely agreed we could have tweaked the boost!!

i hope no actual golf holes were harmed in the creation of this game, that scream sounded too painful!

Developer

LOL - thanks OmegaFalcon!

Antigolf sees you play as a golf hole who is fed up with being the target. You must dodge all sorts of golf balls in a bullet hell that constantly throws new challenges at you! This game is a great demonstration of how to apply VFX in an indie game.

Detailed Review

=========================

[ + + + + - ] :: ENJOYMENT

I love that you have the difficulty ramp up every few seconds by introducing new mechanics! During my second playthrough I was surprised that the difficulty level didn't reset! At first I thought it was a great bug feature, but I wished I could have started over and seen what happens at the 2 minute mark. I may never know.

Because of that, I was unmotivated to play it beyond the second and third playthrough. It seemed impossible to get a better time at a higher difficulty. Otherwise I would have given you 4 stars (assuming there really was more waiting for me after the 2 minute mark).

I think in order to achieve 5 stars you'd have to make the game more non-linear. That could be accomplished by changing the terrain (maybe uneven ground, or areas of faster/slower movement), or by having resources or powerups to collect. Something that gives me more motivation to play longer.

Edit: I saw both Enjoyment and Creativity as being 3.5 stars. I decided to put an extra star here rather than let the half-stars go to waste. Hope you don't mind! :)

[ + + + - -] :: CREATIVITY

Reversing the role between a golf player and a golf ball is definitely an original idea! I love how you had the ball narrate their perspective. It worked well as a bullet hell game.

I think a 4 or 5 star rating would require another leap in creativity. As it stands, it boils down to a bullet hell. What other twists could you add? Maybe there could be a society of golf balls who live underground and coordinate their revenge against the golf players? Maybe it's a bullet hell BUT you can knock the bullets back? Just some ideas.

[ + + + + - ]  ::  PRESENTATION

I was leaning towards giving 3 stars for this, but how could I? You had camera shakes! You had particle collisions! You had trailing effects! You did a great job! That, and you also gave the ball a voice. It definitely enhances the experience! There was a sound for everything. Loved the music too!

I can't give it 5 stars because what you did has been done before in the same contexts. None of the effects stood out to me as groundbreaking or unique. Perhaps you could enhance certain moments with a scrolling in-game cutscene like what they do at bowling alleys? Just an example: maybe you could create more intensity for a collision between 2 homing balls by creating an animated graphic of your hole doing a matrix-style jump as the two balls come crashing together.

You still did a great job! This was definitely your strongest point.

That was a simple but fun and memorable experience. I really liked the character narration explaining the controls in the comical fashion. Great take on the theme too, great job!

Thanks SoloBro!!

Very enjoyable.The voice acting set the scene, the graphics are nice and its great that the balls stay on the green as a persistent hazard. Even ebtter is that you want to knock red ones into others to destroy them. Good progression keeps it challenging too

Fuzz Force!! Thank you for your encouragement! Loved your shark game BTW, super funny and great look :D

You had the same idea as one of mine at the start of the jam. Although the mecanics you've come up with are very different to what I was planning. I always find it interesting that different people come up with such different interpretations of the same ideas, even when the idea is pretty specific (in this case "Golf, but you play as the hole").

I love the way the game develops over time. You get the idea, then homing balls, then the giant balls... No idea if it goes any farther than that, I only lasted just over a minute on my best attempt.

I also love the humour and personality the voice-over gives the game. Touches like that make such a difference to how a game feels, it can cover up a lot of sins!

How is this any different mechanically to a bullet-hell dodge-em-up? I get that thematically it's a reversal of roles, but when you're playing, what is the unique perspective?

Exploit: Tap space constantly to move faster! Seems the boost isn't limited by a cooldown or anything.

Bug: Restarting doesn't fully reset the state. I still had homing balls and the large ones flying around at the start of a new game.

Graphics seem a bit inconsistent. You have high-res balls and shadows. Mid res hole. And super-low-res golfers as if they're from an Atari 2600 game at the sides!

Overall, I enjoyed my time with this game rather a lot! Well done.

Developer

Hey thank you so much for all the feedback! I love we had similar original ideas... You're totally right on some of your improvement ideas from mechanics to graphics, definitely areas we could improve. Thank you for the advice!

Submitted(+1)

It's great how a simple idea can be useful for developing such a fun game. I love how you introduce both controls and mechanics in an introduction. The best part is the narrator, absolutely hilarious! Congrats!

Thanks Isabel!!

Very fun game, I really like the voice acting it reminds me of the old 3D worms games voicelines. I'm not sure how many other golf ball types spawn later so I apologize if its in there but I think it would be cool to have a golf ball that's attracted to the player so it curves around them like it has a gravity force around it. How did you go about the pseudo 3d effect with drop shadows and height in general?, I've been thinking about remaking an old 2d golf game I've made and I don't think my old implementation was the best.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks for the feedback! It was a script done my co-developer, David Schmitt! I'll have to ask him or have him reply here!

Developer(+2)

Thanks for the feedback, Tom! The red golf balls do curve toward the player like a gravity effect, but we could add another ball type with a much stronger gravity force toward the player.

For the shadow effect, it took me a while to find it, but on YouTube people seem to call the effect "Fake height". My implementation is heavily based on this video by GucioDevs:

I added a small vertical offset to the shadow so you could still see it when the ball is on the ground, and I changed the horizontal and vertical launch speeds to be based on the player's distance from the golfer instead of random ranges.

Thanks for playing our game, and good luck with your work on the golf game! ⛳

Thanks for clarifying and his video looks super useful!

Very fun and addictive. The voice acting and human sound effects are genius - super well done.

Thank you TingGame!!

Love the fast paced gameplay! This is the kind of game where high level players look really cool! (like bullet hells or most rythm games)

Developer

Heck yeah!! Thank you Norrland!

Submitted(+1)

Cool game! I've seen other reversed golf entries, but I like how this one actually turns it into some kind of bullet hell game. Also enjoyed the voice acting.

Developer

Thank you Thomas Bringer!!
