I think the game has a nice setting and an interesting concept. The sprites and areas are really pretty, I loved moving around the world and through the environment.

I don’t think there’s a problem necessarily with a rock-paper-scissors style of combat per se, but centering the whole combat system around it to the point where you need to consistently win versus a random AI made the game very luck-based and tedious at times. I hit ties very often against the foe, and having it not progress the battle at all wasn’t enjoyable. I’m glad to hear combat will be updated though.

Overall I really liked the concept though, would be excited to see updated in the future! Great work!

Really neat concept and you nailed the gameboy spirit with both the simple graphics and the very pokemon-like music. I love how the character is low in pixels but still very eye-catching and nicely done. I actually like the idea of going with the rock-paper-scissors combat since that is basically what pokemon is to a degree, but just using the raw rock-paper system makes it feel much more luck than anything else. And it could take quite a lot of time in some fights because it was a coin flip. But I think there is plenty that could be done to polish it into something fantastic. And again, the setting and art is fantastic so I still really enjoyed it. Good job!

Really interesting game. Pretty fun overall. I couldn't figure out how to use items though. I don't know if it was a bug with my web browser or if I just wasn't doing something right. Either way, I still enjoyed my playing. Very nice animation and art direction.

Really fantastic artwork! Moving around the world and interacting feels great. Combat... was not fun at all. And I ran into a bug with the bag and had to restart once.

Developer

yehp thanks  for trying out our  game.

combat will be reworked, as for the inventory bug mind explaining what happened?

Looking forward to seeing what updates you make! I'll do my best to explain the issue, but when I went to use the bag during combat, I could not back out (the black part of the bag screen remained). However the items would shift off screen at times, I can't recall if it was from the dpad or pressing b.

Rock paper scissors, what an awesome idea to interpret in a combat system! Ingenious. The world is amazing. I would have liked the movement to be with the left hand, as in the handheld though.

thanks for playing. your the only one who seems to like the combat, but yeh its definitely incomplete and would need to be reworked

Well, it is a common "combat" (decision) system in anime, so, why not?! I liked it and would never thought to use it like that. :-D Maybe other players didn't get it?..

Developer (1 edit)

I think I get the other players point though, the combat is definitely  unforgiving, so were just gonna have to change the way rock-paper-scissor is incorporated...

A little too complex and animated for the game boy, but the artstyle really captvated me! Great game!

Took me a while to get used to the inventory system.

The combat is really hard, probably because enemy’s attacks are random. Hence, it’s hard to come up with a strategy.

Overall this is a solid entry. My favorite part is the overworld art. Does it feel like a gameboy game? DEFINITELY.

Thanks for creating this game!

Very cute little game! love the pixelart

Game is fun but battle a bit longish, especially since its fully random :). I think you should lower the HP and maybe add some patterns (with hint based on monster sprite).

Congrats!

Thats extremely good music, the pixelart and the animations are not left behind neither, the gameplay its interesting but I find the combat boring after a while, nevertheless this game is just a pleasure to look and listen at :>

Absolutely luscious presentation. The lively animations, the tasteful sound effects, the catchy music... even the menus and UI elements are bursting with character and flavor.

The world also seems engaging and mysterious, although I wasn't able to glean much of a story from what I encountered.

My main reservation is this: I don't think that rock/paper/scissors is a deep enough mechanic to serve as the core of the gameplay. It's OK to bring it in at the margins, but it shouldn't be at the center.

Also, I was not able to use the potions or defeated enemies in my inventory; not sure if I was doing something wrong, or if this just wasn't implemented.

thank you for playing our game.

And yeh we've mulled it over and even when we finish and flesh out the combat, it might just not be for everyone.... so we've decided to just redo it  and go for a more traditional type of combat.

we ran out of time so inventory and items are unusable atm, besides just being able to view stuff you pick up. and as for monsters dropping items we were minutes before deadline ended so just made portals drop monsters regardless if you win or not.

The art is phenomenal and very cute! The little witch sprite is visually one of my favorite player characters I've seen so far this jam. I'm obsessed with her hat animation. I love the direction this game is going and think it's the type of game that could definitely warrant further development after the jam ends. The rock paper scissors mechanic is rather tedious though and it doesn't seem like I could actually use the potions I acquired. The interpretation of the jam theme also felt like a bit of a stretch without the inventory being a more core part of gameplay.

This game definitely has that "Gameboy Soul" though. Great job!

Love the Art! So sick looking, I really think you should keep working on this, but I think you need to replace the rock paper scissors format, Or make battle more snappy, like best out of 3 type thing :)

best art and sound i've seen so far, gameplay was a bit dull not fun spamming stone paper scissors all the time, zero strategy. theme is a bit of a reach.
