Not bad. I found a safe point somewhere in the middle of the screen after a few rounds, getting 0/10 with 1 affected. It is like there is always a way to out whatever you face. I can see it can be a good way to let people pay attention to EMOTIONAL DAMAGE.

Haha so intense. I dig it.

Thank you!

Cool concept, good job! I like it when games try to bring awareness to real life struggles and their impact.

I found a dead zone  in the game (not the same as the one mentioned in another comment) which I will notch to including meditation in my daily routine :)

Cheers!

That's one of those "features, not a bug." Except it's super duper a bug! Just with an unintended benefit!

Thank you so much for playing!

Interesting game, though i'm not a fan of bullet hell games, because i'm very bad at them lol, my cups filled were 6/10 and 5 people were affected by my stress.

Thank you for playing!

I enjoy bullet hell games, and I love how you created a metaphor to dealing with stresses in life. At first I was overwhelmed with everything that was going on, but as I got through the days, I learned the patterns to dodge shapes and "deal with the stress". I think you took a simple concept and added to it with a neat thematic idea.

My highscore was 2/8 stress with no others getting stress and no emptying cup. As a bullet hell gamer, I did the thing that must be done and looked for a safe spot. Screenshot below lol.

Doing a run without cheesing it, I realized there was a bug where the stress gain rate didn't double when I emptied the cup. Did 9 cup emptying and ended with 3/8 stress with 2 others getting stressed.

I think my least enjoyable part of this game was the acceleration when moving. it made it really hard to do precise inputs for dodging when I wanted to and it felt like I had less control over myself. That's just from a gameplay perspective, but I guess you could say it fits in with the stress theme since its hard to control yourself when dealing with stress?

Fun little game.

:>

I was actually surprised that no one mentioned any bugs other than the safe spots (which I was aware of, but didn't have time to fix). I didn't run into any calculation bugs, but I put them together so quickly, I knew there had to be some. Finally, you found one! Thank you. If and when I get back to this, I'll check it out.

The poor feeling of control during the movement wasn't originally intentional -- it was a side effect of entering one or two lines of code to get the player moving and not enough time to tune it -- but became part of the metaphor when I realized that avoiding stresses aren't always easy, and should be reflected in how the player moves. With that in mind, I didn't spend a lot of time thinking about how to improve that aspect, as I was so busy trying to cram in everything else.

Thank you for your detailed comment. I greatly appreciate it!

Edit: I didn't realize when I first replied which game you submitted. Shadeshift is still my favorite game of the jam, so it means that much more that you found some enjoyment out of my game. Thanks again!

Nice game, rated it. pls rate my game also if you don't mind - https://itch.io/jam/brackeys-7/rate/1418152

Simple graphics but nice game. It really makes me stress.

Developer

Thank you! I hoped it helped you manage real-life stress a little bit better. :)

Wow cool game! But I guess there's an issue with the side collider there. I can go off the screen at some side and get less hit. Overall it's a great game, nice work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you much! I actually didn't use colliders for the side, but a variable float to prevent travel in units. The side was just to show you how far you can go. The issue is just I didn't code the stresses to cover enough of the field because I didn't play test enough. If I'm able to revisit this game, I'll fix it. Your feedback means a lot, though. Thank you!

Great game! Really liked the stress concept, pretty unique! Not sure if this was intentional but I was able to find a spot slightly to the right and down a bit where nothing ever hit you so I was able to play through the whole game without ever getting hit. It was still really fun though!

Developer

Thank you so much! It was not intentional, but I found it too late to fix it. Fortunately most people get the point. I appreciate the play and the comment!

Really liked this game! The sound effects and texts are simply hilarious! Good job :]

"My leaders aren't doing anything" US politics in a nutshell, some of these things are relatable, and luckily most of them haven't happened to me yet. I agree with other people that beating the stress in the game made me feel more capable of dealing with them in real life. Haven't seen anything like this in this game jam yet, I am glad I found this gem, great work!

Developer

Thank you so much. That means a lot coming from a talented developer like yourself. It was a challenge making "stresses" as broad as humanly possible. They started out very specific to what me and people close to me often feel and I had to dial it back to try and be more relatable. I'm glad some of them landed!

And yes, anyone in the US will hopefully find that one particularly relevant.

I'm glad you liked it. Thanks again!

I have done so! Thank you for playing!

Right from the start, I could feel the stress this game was trying to represent and that just made me want to try harder to "manage" it.  By the end, I felt like I really working to get a handle on the stressors and I started to relax a bit.   Very cool way to make people aware to the effects stress (and the way we handle it) can have on our lives and those around us.  Would love to see this game go further.  Nice work!

This game accurately represented stress in a lot of neat ways. I felt like beating the stress in the game made me feel just a tiny bit more capable of dealing with it in real life. Pretty cool.

Developer

Thank you so much. I am so relieved that the consensus is, "This does what you set out to do." I didn't need it to be perfect, but I was so worried it wouldn't, and I honestly felt very defeated by the end of development. There are obvious flaws, but everyone saying they "get it" is very enlightening to see. You might say the development added a lot to my cup, and likely to my AT LEAST my wife's cup. ;)

I very much appreciate you playing and commenting! It means a lot.

I really like this, you can feel the stress that it is trying to emulate, my blood pressure is currently 150/90. I feel great right now! It has a weird mix of learning the sound ques of the different "stresses", which actually makes for a really fun gaming experience! I would love to see this developed further!

Developer(+1)

Goodness! I didn't mean to get you THAT tense! I guess it's "encouraging" that I was able to stress you out, because that was my intention!

I'm pretty new to game development, but I've challenged myself to complete a game jam every month for 2022. I've learned a tremendous amount already, but one thing I learned during this is that games often don't come together until right near the end, and how important certain elements are to the overall experience. The sound -- while I fully intended to have it in the way it is implemented from inception -- was one of the last things added in development, and almost didn't make it due to time constraints. Playing the game now, and seeing all the comments about it, it is so crucial to the game that it is insane that it was near the bottom of my priorities during development. It seems so obvious now.

Thank you so much for playing! Maybe sit down and take some deep breaths! :)

Politics kept getting me, very relevant. I really like how every stress has its own sound cue that plays before it goes. Good stuff!

Developer(+1)

That is one of those happy accidents that Politics ended up being the hardest to avoid (although Medical was up there for me -- that stupid thing comes out of nowhere). I designed the stress patterns first, and assigned what they were after the fact. Maybe subconsciously I assigned them appropriately, but I really wasn't trying to make one stress harder than another based on the topic. Each stress people go through in life is harder for some than others. For me, financial would be #1, and that's by far the easiest to avoid.

Thank you for playing and commenting!

This is a very cool idea. At the start of the game I was overwhelmed by all the things that could halm me, but as the game progressed, I started to be more conscious of patterns and timings. I felt like, by paying attention to what was 'stressing me out' the most, I was better equipped to handle it. You could definitely expand on this in the future. Maybe make the effect of spending your points on each of the stressors a little more pronounced. Towards the end of the game, I still couldn't really notice a difference between the ones I had put points into and the ones I hadn't. Also, loved all the heartfelt messages about dealing with stress. Very wholesome.

Developer(+1)

To be honest, this came down to the wire for me. My plan was to submit it and move on with my life, because I really wasn't pleased with how it turned out. I was reworking major mechanics up to the very end, and the "reward" for getting a stress down to 0 changed radically up until the last second. I was so disappointed that I didn't even enjoy playtesting it myself, so to hear that you think it's good enough to be EXPANDED on is very heartening and encouraging. You hit on a lot of the ideas I was originally trying to go for, so I guess some of my point came across. Thank you tremendously for playing this and taking the time to provide an uplifting message. It means a lot.

I'm currently challenging myself to complete a game jam every month for the year 2022. This was February's submission. I won't be able to come back to this until that challenge is over, but it's definitely on the list of potential future projects in a way it wasn't prior to seeing all the comments its getting.

Submitted

I completely understand that. It's really easy to get caught up in all the things you wanted for the project and lose sight of what someone who comes to it with fresh eyes would see.

Doing a game jam every month sounds like a great idea! I wish you all the best with it and I look forward to seeing anything you do in the future.
