How does the game fit the theme?
This game fits the theme as in general, items that you can collect tend to be on the risky side to get, especially the cookie crumbs, which are designed to be hard to get, for a nice reward. Oh, and the story incorporates the theme as well.

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
A couple snippets for the sprite flipping, laser beam (the Raycast code), and some other code related to the lasers.
A couple of the sound effects are edited sound effects from Pixabay.
The only other thing is that the font is Balsamiq Sans, and the other member working on this game made the music, and helped with testing.

I like that there are multiple mechanics that change how the game is played. Story plot is quite innovative. Well done!

Submitted(+1)

Fun game! I liked the idea of switching perspectives (topdown and sideways) on the same level, it has a lot of potential for future levels. Loved the music aswell. Well done!

Developer

You're the first person who mentioned the music, good to know it was appreciated! The other person who worked on this game did the music, and the genre is basically whatever we were feeling like. the main track is also (somewhat) adaptive, because we though it would be cool! (It's also like 6 and a half minutes long, which is pretty funny)

Developer

Hey all, many people have reported a bug where you get flipped over and can no longer jump, getting stuck at the start of level 2. To avoid this, just don't die whilst facing up in top-down 2D mode in the first room in level 2. That should save a reset. Sorry that it isn't fixed, I missed the 48 hour period to fix it, and despite someone reporting it to me in time, I had no idea what caused it until recently.

Submitted(+1)

I really like this one! Everything is fun, even the story! The only thing is at one point I ended up stuck on my back and couldn't turn over ^^ Other than that, it's a great game, congrats!

Developer(+1)

This bug is starting to feel like the slow laser bug... I wish I'd manage to catch it! (If you are wondering, the reason why that happens is because if you game over in a specific way, the game incorrectly keeps you facing up instead of down. I'm really irritated about that bug because I could've fixed it, but the bug fixing period is over :(... ) Great to know the rest is good!

Developer

Actually I have zero idea what causes that bug, could you tell me how you ended up like that?

Submitted(+1)

I don't really remember :/ I think I was on the wall, I jumped and landed like that

Developer(+1)

That's alright, I'll try to figure it out when I get to fixing the bug.

Great entry! The wall-switching mechanic is actually really clever, and I think there's a lot of potential there. Reminds me of Fez in a way. The dialogue was also pretty entertaining and witty. This is an especially polished entry--often game jam games can be a bit frustrating, but that was not the case at all. Keep up the good work!

Developer(+1)

That's good! Y'know, it is kinda like Fez, although that's a coincidence (a very neat one at that though!) I shall, I plan on updating it to fully fix it up (and maybe add another level with a new mechanic)!

I'm surprised you were able to make such a complete experience in this short of a time!  I played through the entire game and really liked the puzzles you created.  Only critique would be that the bottom left section of the final boss has 2 red buttons that can be pushed without opening the wood blockades - this can be done if you hug the outside of the white wall nearest to the buttons.  Still, I liked the game overall! Good job!

Developer(+1)

Even I'm surprised I did it in such a short time, thanks very much! One of those buttons was completely intentional to avoid, it just makes it easier, but I didn't know about the other one!

Submitted(+1)

the game is pretty fun but i ran into one bug where the mouse got stuck upside down and i couldnt jump

Developer

Yeah that bug was something that I was notified of, but I couldn't fix it in time for the bug-fixing cutoff because I had no idea what caused it! Sorry about that.

Submitted(+1)

I like the story and the gameplay is very fun. Great work!

Developer

Great! The story was something I had wanted from the beginning, but what the story would be, I didn't know, until about halfway through.

The levels were very well designed considering the challenge required to switch between 2D and 3D, and I really had fun clearing them in particular the massive dust monster level! The writing was also superb and I really enjoyed the humour. I did encounter a bug where my mouse was flipped over and could no longer jump. As with others, the laser rotation speed could use a little tiny boost (I read that you already fixed that). Apart from that, amazing game!

Developer

I was going to fix that flipped mouse bug, but the time for that has already past. I even had a comment before the 48-hour period was up talking about it, and it went completely over my head because I wasn't sure what they were referring to! Sorry about that. I should also just put in a laser rotation speed slider in the settings, I can't seem to dial it in! But, I'm glad to know that you enjoyed it so much!

Nice submission. I really liked the game play “switch” and the laser puzzle A upgrade to the charter could be nice.

Developer(+1)

Charter? Not sure which gameplay mechanic you are referring to, but I will say the options do need to be fixed, I had the audio sliders working and then they broke just before I released it, which was a pain! The laser puzzle seems to be a big point of enjoyment, that's good! Thanks for the review!

Submitted(+1)

I meant the player character, the rat. Just thinking adding some animation to it could be nice.

Developer

Oh, absolutely! I didn't end up having enough time for it but it was something I was thinking about.

Submitted(+1)

Cool game. The wizard theme is nice and the gameplay switching is very good.

Submitted(+1)

loved the gameplay, really cool switching between top down controls and platformer controls, really unique!

Developer

That's great! The swapping mechanic was actually made from an initial idea of forced swapping, where every 15 seconds you would be forced into the mode you weren't in at the time. I might do something with that after the jam, might make for a good bonus level...

Submitted(+1)

I mean it’s always excused to have bad level design in jams but it’s really refreshing to see jam games with this level of game design, goodjob on that! the gameplay is nice, the story is a nice addition, the sfx is fitting, overall very solid entry

Developer

Great to know! The levels were tested a lot by the other person working on the game, we both tried to find the problems (found a big softlock at the end of the game jam, thank goodness that was spotted), Thanks for the compliments! I was slightly concerned that I had still left in something that would've made the game annoying, glad to know it's a clean experience!

Submitted(+1)

The level designing here is really clever ,using different gravity styles to complete a level was awesome and was executed very well , it did confuse me sometimes on what was the like "die" are for which gravity style but maybe its just me..great work :)

Developer

Thank you! All things that damage the player damage on both layers, only the pits are disabled when you are in platforming 2D, but I get why it may be confusing, with there being two different gameplay styles and all.

The story telling and setup was a nice touch, gave me a deeper sense of motivation for what's happening. Enjoyed the switching of planes to solve puzzles, also liked how you'd have to use both planes to solve a certain puzzle, like the spinning red cross. I did find it a bit difficult at times to press E while moving and jumping with WASD, which caused me to fall off or take damage. Also since needing another hand to move the laser, maybe that hand could be used to switch the walking planes as well. On a very minor note, it felt like taking damage on static obstacles should make me jump a bit so I have a chance to recover at a distance, also to add a bit of physical damage indicator. Other than that, great work!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! I will say, swapping is definitely something that should've been keybinded to something like the left mouse button, good point. It would help with the second problem as well! I actually tried to add a bit of a jump to when you are damaged, but I didn't have enough time to figure that out, will do for a later version.

Cute story. The gravity switching made for some interesting puzzle solving and platforming. The levels were interesting to puzzle out and explore. Lazer puzzles were fun. I really liked the rounds where I needed clear 100+ just by pressing a button. The fun and easy game is refreshing between the more challenging puzzles.

The purple blob look was used for a few things, some safe, some dangerous, some to block an exit. They only looked subtly different and I assumed their effects would be similar. I think they should look more different from each other. In other case, you had something spiky that was obviously dangerous, lazers looked like light, wood looked like barriers. I really needed to test the blobs to guess what they did.

Developer(+1)

I attempted to differentiate between the types of purple dust and also tried to clear up some of the inconsistencies, but I must've left in one or two inconsistencies, whoops! Good to know everything else was very consistent. Also good to know the little minigame level was enjoyed, I wanted to put in a variety of gameplay styles, and I thought something like an easy version of a space invaders-type game would do the trick!

Really cool concept for a game! I like switching with gravity, tho switching back to normal gravity could be a bit smoother and more forgiving. I'm really surprised by the size of the game, I would look back to play through the whole thing again!

Developer(+1)

That's great! The gravity switching was something I got in first, and never ended up polishing up that much (I was very involved in dealing with other problems), So that'll be something that I'll improve later. I also plan on adding some Paper Mario-esque flipping when you turn for some more player animation. Honestly with the size, I was surprised I even managed to toss this much together, thank goodness I didn't do more! (I had plans to do something like 10 levels, that would've gone horribly :) )

Submitted(+2)

took me a while to get used to switching between the two gravities and not walking into the holes in the wall lol but this is a really cool concept! Executed really well with some clever level/puzzle design, and also a cute story that I can maybe relate to.

Developer(+1)

Trust me, even as the developer, I problems with it as well for a while!

Submitted(+1)

nice game, really enjoy the puzzles

Developer

Awesome! I tried to get a mix of puzzles and action, but it seems that the lean into puzzles was a good choice!

Submitted(+1)

Really love the laser mechanic in the game, it reminds me a lot of Fireboy and Watergirl, which I love! I also think that the ability to switch between 2D platformer and top down game is really smart. Well done!!

Developer(+1)

Epic! I thought of the laser mechanic at the very beginning, thought it would be neat for some puzzles (and it was). I originally thought to be able to have both layers have their own separate lasers for more spicy puzzles, but I dropped that pretty early seeing the time constraints.
