How did you interpret the theme?
The game takes the “Blackout” in more interpretations: The physical blackout: The fish experiences a physical blackout, he is weak and hungry from the pollution in the water. He tries to find food to survive, but due to the pollution and due to his state he doesn’t get far and he then has a blackout (dies). The game then shifts to another perspective with a different blackout The fisherman has a financial blackout, he needs to gather money to survive and to pay his taxes, rent and electricity bill. The fisherman decides to go fishing and to sell the fish he caught, so he can escape from this situation. After the fisherman gathers enough money, the game has one more interpretation of the blackout. That is moral blackout: The fisherman after successfully gathering the money, he throws his orange juice bottle in the water. He doesn't care about the pollution, he thinks that no one will see it and notice that he throws the bottle. The people with the same thinking caused the fish's blackout. In conclusion the game takes the “Blackout” in three interpretations: physical, financial and moral.

cool game!! love the games perspective for both fish and fisherman. great idea that the game takes blackout in three interpretations! its a nice touch to details. overall its pretty fun to play including the arcade mode!
Thanks!!!
I really enjoyed the music and the fishing section. Even the fish swimming section was fun. The music is fantastic and fits the vibe so well. The realization that you are fishing in the same spot you were swimming in earlier is a cool moment in the game. I like how this game has a plot in story mode. I think the timer should pause when you are on the upgrade screen in arcade mode, and maybe the game should have at least one more upgrade. But yeah, I enjoyed this one. Fabulous!
I am glad you enjoyed the music and the game!
If you have any idea of a new upgrade you can tell me I will be happy to hear it!
Pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this one! I personally think it gets the story across pretty effectively, it's a creative take on the theme (I'd only use the word 'blackout' in one of those instances, but it's not that much of a reach tbh,) and though I'll admit that Story Mode isn't the most fun, Arcade Mode definitely picks up the pace and takes advantage of the mechanics you have. The fish is seriously floaty, sure, but taking advantage of the character controller and thusly only moving clockwise or counterclockwise without daring to let go is actually quite a lot of fun. I got 126. I am far worse at the Fisherman Perspective but I also can't give it a lot of time before I go to work today--I can't say I didn't get into it! I only had one bug, that being in Story Fisherman, where I had 2k to my name and bought an upgrade that cost 1k, it upgraded it twice instead of once and took all my money. Small bug in the grand scheme of things but a bug still.
If the game has any weak spot, it's the visuals. The colors are all fine and well, I don't really mind if the spritework's rough, but what I mean more is that--as a non-artist--you do not necessarily have to limit yourself to flat colors and paint buckets. Have some fun with gradients! I get that that'd be harder to pull off in the ocean (where the change from flat color to flat color matters a lot, and you've telegraphed that very well) but it's certainly manageable. You could also have a few bubbles in the background, or even little particles, or much tinier fish just kinda going about their business. That's all flavor and flair I suppose, but for Arcade Mode (I'm not sure it would fit the story too much) it would be very nice to have a visual on where the nearby fishes or even nearest fish is when they aren't on screen, since wandering around a single-color screen holding left or right and making sure I'm not secretly at an invisible wall is frustrating when I have a timer over my head. It's recoverable but it's put me in a bad spot every time I tried.
if I can say something less about the game: I would be more open to the criticism you're receiving from the people who've missed the story in one way or another or didn't try arcade mode. I don't think you have a bad attitude whatsoever--I get the need to defend your work, especially if the person on your tail hasn't seen everything you put into it, but one of the first things I learned as an adult/college student is that you won't always be there to defend your work. Sometimes your work will be seen, and you'll be given an unexpectedly low grade or have the bulk of your game passed up on without you personally being able to make the player see your perspective. Think of it less as, "this player missed a thing!" and more as "how did this player miss this thing?" or perhaps "why would this player assume anything except my vision?" That is one the most difficult parts of game development, to the point where you could readily look at the comments of my own game and call me a blazing hypocrite for letting people know that the game is hard because there's a bug. I think there's a material difference between that (plus you stating that letting people cheese the story fish perspective was intentional, that feels incredibly allowed to me) and disagreeing with people missing the story but I have to go to work in like two minutes and can't think much more on that.
To be clear though, above all else, I think you did a very good job with this and I'm excited to see what games and stories you have in store going forward :)
I will take your advice!
To be honest I don't know how that bug happened but I will look in the code and see if I can fix it.
Thank you for the feedback!
If it helps you at all, I had a similar instance happen in Arcade Mode where I bought a cheap upgrade but had money for the next two so it bought the next two. In that instance it was actively beneficial to me so I didn’t mention it but the root cause of the bug is probably the same
I think it is how GDevelop manages the variables this happened to my first game jam game when you pressed to mute the global volume and it would do the action two times, then I saw that if I put the wait 0.1 seconds, it solves the problem! It's probally the same in here too! When I played my game I didn't saw this bug and that's why I didn't put the wait 0.1 because this only happens rare for GDevelop to do this!
After the jam ends I will probally put a fixed version where the wait 0.01 seconds is in the button's code
Btw
Thanks again!
Interesting game, the switch in perspective is a cool concept, maybe it would be nice to make accessing the index a bit clearer at first?
I am glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the feedback!!!
I like that you chose to use your game to get across an environmental message. However, I think that message could be better conveyed in the gameplay itself, and that the gameplay could be improved to make it more fun at the same time. It felt a little off that there wasn't any interplay between the fisherman side and the fish side while playing as the fish--no hooks in the water and no other fish. Also, it would be interesting if the fisherman's activity was more closely linked to the amount of trash/the dying fish during the gameplay itself, rather than just as a note at the end. Maybe as you upgrade, more trash shows up and the fish get scarcer?
I think you could make the catching minigame a whole lot harder, because the differences between the types of fish wasn't noticeable for me until the fourth level fish and I think I only lost one or two fish throughout the whole story mode. I also didn't see anything negative happen when hitting the trash.
I hope you keep making games and improving, because I can see that you're very creative and want to tell good stories!
Well try arcade mode you will see that in the fish perspective you will see more fish (dead ones), I didn't put any fish in the fish perspective in story mode to show that he doesn't find any food.
The trash will take some of your money probally you didn't observe it, try it again if this happens again than I will go check again the code cause the trash will take you money and if you miss in the minigame you lose some money too, depending on which fish you lost.
I thought to not make the game harder to keep it simple and easy so the story mode can be enjoyed by everyone if you want a harder version try arcade mode, you will see that there the game will be more fun and chalenging!!!
Thanks for the feedback!
The first part where the fish looks for food I put the fish at the very top because I know that the trash spawn 'Y' coordinate may not go all way to the top, and I was right, it didn't. So, I just sat that and I never saw 1 fish I could eat, so I died.
The Fisherman should have a target to cast to. Not one fish got close enough for me to hook. I never did the 3rd part.
Fishing games are usually great fun, you just need some work on yours. Keep at it!
Well that is intentional done in the STORY MODE to make the game easier for no one to block at that section and enjoy the rest of the game, pls check the arcade mode and you will see that trash will spawn at the top too, and you will see some dead fish too.
In the story mode the fish is meant to die to show the pollution.
The fisherman HAS a target probally you miss it but it says that you need to gather 9000$, the upgrades will help you gather this very fast!
You can check it again and try arcade mode you will see there the game is harder and more chalenging.
I will highly sugest you to try arcade mode, some people enjoy that section more than story mode!
I finished the whole story mode in only 7 minutes and I played slow not speedrun! Check the upgrades they will make your life easier when gathering the money!
Add a few more visual effects and it'll be a banger!
Thanks!
I LOVE IT! I just wonder that why we loose the fish when we miss it? And also why the quick time event is same as other fishes?
Well for the quick time minigame, it gets faster for each type of fish, now I know it is not so noticeable. I thought to not make the game harder if I would have put different minigame for all fish it could confuse the player so I thought that I should just make the arrow faster!
I did the minigame yk to not just be "you touched the fish you caught it", at first I thought to make it like once you catch the fish you need to bring it to the surface but then it was very time consuming so I chose to change it to the the arrow minigame
I am glad that you enjoyed my game!!! Thanks for the feedback :3!!!
Wow you really got a lot of use out of the theme! I liked the gameplay and the music was really cool. There were just a couple of little things. The first thing is in the story modes first minigame I was able to just go to the very top of the screen and not need to move. The other thing was I wish there was a way to skip the dialogue faster. I found myself finishing reading it pretty quickly but then having to wait for it to change to the next one. Just a few little things that I don't mind but still thought I should say. You did a good job with this game!
Thanks for the feedback!!!
For the fish thing in the story mode that is actually intentional, you might ask why to do this, I thought that if a player strugles with the fish perspective from the story mode he shouldn't be stuck and not enjoy all the game!!!
If you check the fish perspective in arcade mode there you will see that trash comes in the top of the screen!!!
That is actually a pretty smart thought process. Adding a way for players who are struggling to keep playing your game is a really good idea. Have a good day and good luck with the rest of the jam!
Thanks, I wish you the same!
absolute cinema
:]
A simple but addictive fishing game. It has unique visuals and the music fit the game really well and the arcade mode was also pretty fun. But I feel like the beginning of the story mode when you are the fish is a bit unnecessary. But I still think the game is pretty well done.
Thanks for the feedback! Actually, the fish section at the beginning is very important to the story because it sets up the whole message about pollution. It also makes the story circular: the fisherman's careless action at the end is exactly what caused the fish's blackout in the first place.
I am happy that you enjoyed my game!!!
Really cool, flash game aesthetics. Nice work!
Thanks!!!
Hey! I really liked the game, it was a simple yet interesting experience :)
The music is beautiful and fits the gameplay perfectly.
The only things I would like to highlight are an inability to skip the story dialogues and the absence of the pause menu.
I guess that I should have done a skip button, really didn't thought about it!!!
I thought that the player will play the story mode once since there is arcade mode, but yea I should have done a skip button!
For the pause button I don't find its use, in the story mode there is not a timer and in the arcade it's a fast game, but if I am missing something with use of the pause button you can tell me, I will be happy to hear your thoughts!!!
Thanks for the feedback!!!
cool game
Thanks :D!!!
It's fun, reminds me of old fishing games, for when i was a little child, really nice game ya have there, great job!
I am happy that you enjoyed it, yea I took inspiration from the old fishing games :) !!!!
My favorite part of the game was the fisherman's perspective and the different layers of water. It reminds me of older fishing flash games I played back in the day. I also like that you draw attention to environmental pollution with this simple game.
I am glad that you enjoyed it, I took some inspiration from the old fishing games, happy that you caught the reference!!!
pretty good!
Thanks!!!
IT fun i really like the arcade and fisherman perspective but the timer is ehhhh it will be more fun if the timer was not there but i like the movement is soo smooth and so peaceful. GREAT WORK!
Thanks!!!
I thanks you for making such a great job!
Very good game i like the Sounds
Thanks!
The discarded bags looked like cheese and it murked me haha
I kinda see it too now, hahahaha!
Actually the fisherman was designed to look like cheese, but it seems other things ended up looking like that too, hahaha
