This one's goooood. I got into the story enough that I was really sad to see it end after one monster encounter--it definitely makes sense when you think about why it would end there and it does definitely help with the innocuous resolution of the plot, but it did also feel like there was more to explore with the character and perhaps a further breakdown. I figure there wasn't time for that though, so ah well.

The audio's great, I only had an issue where most tracks failed to loop for me but the sound design is completely on point. It's weird, it stays in the confines of its character's perspective and elaborates on nothing else, which is exactly right for this narrative. The font you chose for all the text is a bit difficult to read when densely laid out (so the options menu/title screen are fine) but nothing too tragic. I like the horse and shall name it Daiwa Scalper. If I had any proper issues with this game, I'd probably point to the visuals? This is an instance where invisible walls would've certainly done you well rather than having a pretty small patch of sand or 4 jpeg walls keeping you in. I suppose if there's no 360 image available that you could've used for the skybox then the walls are probably among the next best things, even though it just looked weird to me.

This is definitely one of my winners so far. Would love to know what specifically it's based off of, since I can't find anything myself (the guy named Scalp Collector is completely different) and I was intrigued enough by the game to want to read up on the real guy. Great job!!

Hey there! Thank you very much for such a detailed review 🫶

I will definitely fix some unintentional bugs I didn't catch during the development, and poor game design decisions. I didn't have too much time, but yeah, I know it can actually be better.

Talking about the real foundation... well, it's actually more of a creative technique, haha. To stir up tension. It is not based on a particular document, but rather on historical and fiction/part-fiction books, such as "Blood Meridian," "My Confession: The Recollections of a Rogue," and "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee". The great works, by the way.

Ahhh, clever! You had me completely fooled there

This is a really cool game. It's a bit disturbing that events like this are real but it's really cool you based a game off them. I had one issue when there were the enemies attacking me. After the first wave I tried going back into the house because I didn't know there were more waves and then I got stuck on the front porch and all the enemies teleported up onto the roof. This is a cool game. Good job!

Thanks for the review 🫶

I'll try to polish the game better after the jam.

Excellent idea--I love that you picked a relatively-obscure historical narrative to tell in this game. I like the low-poly art style, which in my opinion limited the violence nicely. I was expecting way more graphic gore based on the content warning haha. I LOVE the look of the monsters (they're terrifying haha). I do think that there were some areas where you could improve this. Up until finding a house to hide in and the fight, the action was very regimented. I think there's space here to let the player explore instead of directing the action so specifically, so that they can discover the story a little more organically.

Also, while I think this character is incredibly cool for shooting from the hip while waves of shadow monsters charge him, I would have appreciated a reticle or that he bring the gun up to eye level for aiming. It was impossible to tell where I was shooting and if I had hit anything with each shot. I made it to the final wave by basically firing at random somehow but can't bring myself to go through that much chaos again at the moment, so unfortunately was unable to finish the game.

Very cool, unique game. I'm glad I played it--thank you for creating and sharing something so interesting!

Hey there! Thanks for such a detailed review :)

There is actually an aiming feature in the game! Maybe you didn't use it, or (more likely) there was a bug.

When you're holding the gun, hold RMB.

It works for me!

A simple and fun game, the visuals were awesome and the story was great. The only complaint I had was in the section where you needed to hide in a house, I think adding a marker to show which house to go to would be great, since I was lost for 5 mins looking for the correct house, but other than that great game.

So, the game plays pretty well but not sure about the theme of 'BLACKOUT'. I stopped at the scalping, you should put an NSFW warning for the scalping. I may come back and play later when I am not streaming game play.

Developer(+1)

Hey! That actually makes sense, didn't think about it.

I put the content warning.

The tail of the horse is awesome. I spent a few minutes just walking around the horse and looking how it was made. Yeah, the graphics in this game is simple, but it has its charm. If you decide to make this game bigger, do not polish the graphics too much. It is good as is
