I painted all the graphics myself (:

Pretty art style and very good movement. it felt good to fly the spaceship. although i wasn't able to spot the indicating arrow at the start and i was wandering around for a bit
I adore this game - the art style is goddamn gorgeous, really reminds me of old school PC games where they were always experimenting with new and usually very physical looks - specifically Neverhood.
The flying and shooting gameplay feels incredible, it took me a second to understand the controls but once it clicked I literally had this "oooohhh" moment where I was blown away by how good it felt
My only criticism is the checkpoints - I honestly think they kinda ruin the game, I didn't realize they existed in my first playthrough, flew around for about 5 minutes having the time of my life and then had to reset to read the instructions and actually work out how to beat the game. Once I knew what I actually had to do the game was over in about 30 seconds and I felt kind of disappointed, I think this game would be much stronger if you made the enemies a little harder and make them spawn more, then make it a survival high score attack style game. Players need time to enjoy your controls, combat and art!!!
But ultimately my only criticism is "it's too short" which hopefully you take as a massive compliment.
heck yeah, the world needs more painted games.
thank you, my fellow painting programmer (:
The art is very good. SFX too. It feels like you are playing a cartoon. But unfortunately, I found zero checkpoints. Not sure in which direction I was supposed to fly.
thanks, the yellow stripe points towards the checkpoints
i really like the painting style! and sfx are very nice!
thank you
Really cool, especially the art and sounds!
thank you
the artstyle is amazing. Its very special and it gives the game a “childrens space poster” feel for me. Did you actually draw this stuff irl or is it some kind of photoshop brush?
thank you, i did it irl during my weekly painting club and then took pictures of it
PB: 18.42
First time I ever saw this kind of art in a video game. Look awesome!
Liked:
- Sound
- Art
- Control
- Mechanic of shooting the drones: Adds depth to the game and more decisions for the player to make.
- Death particle are nice!
Could be improved:
- Checkpoints: I feel pre determinded checkpoints on a per map basis would be better than randomly generated checkpoint positions. That way the player could learn the map design and improve his/her score with knowledge over the map. With the added benefit that it removes rng from the spawn point and getting therefore makes getting better times less frustrating.
- Obstacles: I would have liked to see more interaction with the asteroids. Bumping into them, shooting them to get rid of them ...
- Visuals UI: The arrows are sometimes hard to pick out during play. And because they are not arrow shaped confusing in their function. It took me about 10 tries to figure out that the second marker points to the next checkpoint after the current checkpoint.
- HP: right now HP feels very irrelevant. Instead of 10 maybe 3 to 5 would have been better.
All in all great game! Enjoyed it <3
thanks for the well formulated feedback and that's a nice highscore,
i like the idea of a random seed so you could optimize a certain run.
arrows would indeed be better
don't know about the health and bumping into asteroids, sometimes i see people play this version and they struggle very hard already.
31.26 I won't try harder than that.
At first I was scared of the banana and the pickle and was running away from them, until it turned out they are helpful pointers. I love the art style and smooth simplistic gameplay.
thanks, next time i should paint some arrows
Pretty chilling. I like it.
thanks
Sound effects are top notch, 10/10. :D
thanks
Nice sound design
thanks
I got about 100 seconds on my first try then on my second I got around 38 so that was fun :D
The controls are a bit slidey but it's a space ship so I will let it slide. Its a good game I love the artwork the background could be used as a screensaver, I really want it xD
big improvement. and you're right very driftey, i went for some realistic physics
It was still fun to play!
Sounds are perfect haha
I like the concept of hand drawing assets, that's something that I enjoy doing myself too but it's usually sooo time consuming.
thank you, i painted everything during my weekly painting club. took me 2 hours. but making the game itself took like 14 hours
This put a huge smile on my face. Loved the sound, visuals, and gameplay - painted games like this are always so charming. Excellent work!
PS: My score is 90.52!
thank you
The painted assets are legitimately really cool, I would love to see more games like this
there was one other person that painted a game with all watercolor. it had a lot of crows in it
LMAO, pew pew pew pew pew
homemade :P
I loved it, sound design rocks, that "pew pew" gets me every time
haha thanks
took me a few tries but got it barely under 30 secs :)
I love the handmade aesthetics of this, from the handmade sound effects to the art. Simple gameplay but really fun to nail a few checkpoints in a row while blasting through enemy ships. Took me a bit of time to understand what the "next checkpoint" indicators were but that was super useful, thanks for adding those in. The text sometimes overlapped but that's probably due to my widescreen resolution (I played full screen)
With upgrades and some music this could be a really great title. Great job!
thank you, i'll see if i can fix it
The art and your voice for creating the sound effects surprised me! That's really perfect.
There is a clipping background "problem". You can avoid it. Just repeat 2 different and adjacent backgrounds instead of only one. Anyway good job!
i don't understand what you mean. do you mean repeating background problem? if that's what you mean you're right it's 1 mirrored background but i don't know how else to make it tile infinitely. if you know a technique please send me a youtube link with an explanation
