The others have hit the nail on the head. Godot, GMS2 or Unity would be your best bet. Unity is best for tutorials and assets but it’s not the best for 2D. I’m using Godot. It’s simple but takes a while to get your head around it, so learning Godot for a total beginner for a Game Jam might not be the best idea. GMS2 is simple and there’s a free trial for 30 days, it’s probably the quickest to game jam with. Jonas uses GMS2 and is using it for Will You Snail I believe.

There are others but I’ve no experience with them so can’t comment. Also, one last thing on Godot: it requires a tiny bit more work to get it working on itch for html but it’s not a huge problem. Do not leave exporting to the last minute if you’re going to use Godot. In fact, just don’t leave exporting and uploading to the last minute at all.

Happy Game jamming no matter what engine you choose :)

Godot ftw!

Excellent level design. I really enjoyed this, great puzzler!

Music = excellent, art = best I've seen so far during the jam, in fact it was what drew me to trying the game when I saw it.

Was a little confusing at the beginning and as the toe you can be yeeted clear across the map, which is kind of funny tbh!

I enjoyed it, the blobs didn't make a huge amount of sense as the main antagonists. Worms or beetles would've been pretty cool! Spamming the attack and move buttons makes it pretty easy so maybe an addition of more mechanics in future would be good.

Overall, great entry, I enjoyed it, and played until the end!

Totally threw me with the discord ping, thought I was getting discord notifications! But great game, simple but fun. Some more phone interaction options would be awesome with different friends and responses.

It was quite immersive for such a small game, which is very impressive! Has loads of potential and would love to play it again if you add more features and keep developing it!

Nice game, nice implementation. I found it a little too difficult for me but that's me and not the game. Can't really fault it! nice work!

Ah the Wilhelm scream! Nice game, I suspect given more time you'd have been able to implement a lot more to it. I enjoyed it and played until the end as it's compelling. I wanted to know what happens when you get all the humans. Definitely continue development on this, could make a great mobile game like hole.io etc!

An option to upgrade your zombies and add powers may work and a police force who hunts the player which gets harder the bigger the zombie horde. Especially, as there's a police station in the game. Many things you can do to this going forward!

Nice game. Got a little challenging with the pink player but enjoyable! The player sounds are great. I like the parallax background as well and the art is great. I feel like the player movement is a little slippery, it takes a while for the character to stop which definitely adds to the challenge.

Personally, I think if the character stopped almost immediately it would feel much nicer, but I do prefer snappy controls so this is subjective. I liked the idea too, having different ways to play the game is great!

I echo the other comments with ease of playing. Nice work and innovative :)

Excellent game, super impressive that it was done in a week (less than a week looking at submission time!) nice stuff

Thank you :). Highly annoyingly I ran out of time to implement a re-spawn! :(

No problem will do!

Great game! Quite challenging (in a good way) and kept me hooked. Simple, sleek, easy to figure out but hard to master. Nothing major to change imo!

Improvements wise, maybe some background music, and a menu? Turret upgrades would be awesome too but will complicate the game a lot more.

I got to level 4 so don't know if the future levels implement this but a different background or something could add a nice change but that's just opinion :)

Can see this being mobile friendly too! Maybe a few more hints may help when the player fails a level.

Overall, excellent work! I have lots of lessons to learn :)

Yeah I’m also a little concerned about GDScript not being useful outside of Godot.
But for me as a relatively new programmer (1 year experience) it’s helping me learn the problem solving skills needed for programming. Not only that, it’s fun to use Godot to make games which is better for me than Unity, which I find frustrating. More games I make, the better I get at problem solving (hopefully!).

The C# support is getting better so I’m hoping to use that in future too.

Wow that’s such a great and in-depth reply, thank you Game Professor! I have recently switched to Godot from Unity and I must say it’s much easier to make a 2D game in Godot so far, so I’m in total agreement.
I’m not surprised by unreal’s push and use in AAA development so I see that as probably the main player in future as well as proprietary engines.

For me, Godot is exciting to use as I can get things up and running much quicker in it for 2D than Unity. It keeps me coming back. With Godot having less tutorials this also keeps me from staying in tutorial hell so I think my programming skills are improving more quickly

I was interested in using Gamemaker but I also want to become a better programmer and saw that as possibly teaching me bad habits. As well as it’s future looks shaky.

Thank you again!

what are your thoughts on Godot? Do you think it will ever be readily used in industry as Unity has?

Nice graphics, good concept and could be built upon nicely.

Nice game, enjoyed it a lot :)

Sure, I'll review all the ones on here before my post too if they wouldn't mind doing mine :)

Thanks :). Yeah, I repurposed some code from a Unity asset store asset. I know how to fully code these features but this would have taken away from the time I had to do the art (the weak point I wanted to focus on for this game jam) :). Thanks for the review!

This is the longest I've played a game so far from the jam, awesome! I found a cheeky glitch though ;). Press the rewind button whilst moving forward and jumping, the player character floats. I managed to glitch into terrain doing it.

Even so, very good game though! I enjoyed,

Real nice! Love the idea and execution is good. I think I found a glitch where you can move the dust mountains if you jump into them. I eventually got so many of them the FPS dropped bad. Nice idea though and so more different obstacle types would definitely make it more fun.

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! I'll check yours out

Nice, I struggled to understand what I needed to do but I got there. Maybe some more tutorials would help :) nice though

Glad you liked it and thanks for the review!

Thanks man! I reviewed yours :)

Nice, longest I've played a game from the jam. Awesome! I managed to fail and pass a level at the same time but it didn't break the game.

Nice idea, got stuck initially as wasn't obvious what the rewind mechanic was. verall, nice!

Thanks for the honest feedback! I’ll be sure to polish and make the controls better in future. I’ll check out your game sometime today, thanks :)

thanks! Ah I can see why. You need to go upwards, I’ll add an arrow to that after submissions :). Thanks for the comment!

I found it quite challenging, in a good way. Really nice game though and great idea!

A hard game! Definitely worth persevering with though as it's a good game! Nice!

Nice game and good to see a game made in Godot. Very good! Make sure to add a little window of time after the player falls off the platform to jump. it makes it feel much more responsive :)

Nice man, really good game. Tower defence too, very impressive!

Thanks! glad you liked it. Thanks for honest comment :)

Nice, very impressive for a 7 day game! Had loads of fun and want to see more of it.

One thing: I found a bug when trying to retreat to the quarters: the dialogue popup just kept coming up and I could only move one step before it popped up again. This was when I got to the helm and chose to stay there and after defeating the droid.

Nice, very clever idea! Good game. I think I came across a bug where it wouldn't allow me to continue with the dialogue on the first level. Other than that, nice game!

Nice, quite difficult but I really like the idea. I think I managed to break it accidentally by getting to the end and getting hit by an arrow at the same time. It counted as a win but I got both messages. Awesome though, great game :)

Great Art, a little confusing at the beginning but nice :)
