Amazing effort and attention to detail -- beautiful art and fantastic writing. Not my personal preferred genre of game (I don't like rogue-likes, VN, OR comedy / meme-ish games, so there was a lot working against you there), but you still managed to impress me with the amount of care and effort you put forth. And some of the visual gags actually had me laughing aloud. Excellent work!

Developer

Thanks a lot! I'm really happy to see you appreciated the game even if it's not your genre!

I understand that the humor is subjective, but luckily the visual gags seem to have the best "hit" on the most people! XD

Streamed this yesterday with the dev present, but leaving this here for posterity:

  • +The game banks on humor, and while humor is subjective, it worked really well for me and I enjoyed all of it.
  • +The timing on the deaths was amazing and event choreography was great.
  • +The animation, limited as it seemed, was great, especially when the goddess abuses the hero.
  • +The art is cute and simple, and works well for the game. A slight exception would be that the mapping is deceptivel messy, almost suggesting you can do stuff in areas that are basically just blocked off.
  • -My one complaint maybe would be the sudden ending out of nowhere. Also for the spike traps, aside form bashing into them multiple times I did not have a good grasp on how to get past them, and it seems like they just stopped activating when the joke was done (fair enough).

I really enjoyed this entry, with the cave-at that as humor is so subjective, this might not be for everyone. But it sure as hell was great for me.

Developer(+1)

Thanks again!

I'm really happy you liked the humor. Though subjective, at least i'm glad it works on the right target! :D
For the characters I'm lucky to have a friend who draws them, and for the tileset the only fitting one I found was Caz's.
For the maps I think I should add more secrets: I wanted to add some sort of secret paths, but as you said it can be confusing.

I understand the problem with spikes, it's never clear that they swap when you get near them or that you can dodge the one on the secret path, so the player might get frustrated. I think for that I should add more suggestions during the death scenes (or after), like i did with the tree after a tester got stuck on that part.
And for the ending, I wanted to do much more, but I kinda mismanaged my time and underestimated the work to do. So I opted for that cliffhanger. But I'll ponder different ways to introduce that scene.

Whenever I try to play the game, I keep getting errors about missing files.

Developer (2 edits)

Weird... I think it's because of an image with the letter â in the name, and your pc doesn't support that.

It happened to another user with a different game, and he had a japanese-modded pc. Is this also your case?

Submitted

I wouldn't quite say Japanese-modded, but I did install Japanese fonts on this computer due to being interested in Japanese RPG Maker games.

Developer

Mh... i fear that with those fonts images with accented letters had their name changed. I think that if you watch in  the image folder the image called "0âtâHâO3.png_" changed name. Hilariously, it's called like that because it was converted from a Japanese name, which my PC don't support. XD

Knowing this I'll update the game removing accented letters from file names. But I can't update it until the contest ends, I'm sorry.

This dev worked his butt off to create a mountain of content for so many outcomes.  Each scene was so creative, I couldn't believe how many responses there were for dying the same way!

Some real laugh out loud moments, even if not all of the 4th wall breaking was to my taste.  Honestly the game won me over with the dedication shown.  The fact that he wrote all this as a non-native English speaker is so impressive.

Developer

Thanks a lot for trying this game! And I'm happy to see you liked it, even if it's not your genre!

Also for the 4th wall breaks I understand some people don't like them. I use them along other jokes to never have a boring moment in the game, so I don't think I'll stop using them. But I understand that I should be more careful on when to use them, or I'll end up as other games with lame 4th wall breaks. XD

Thanks again for your feedback!

I can't believe it, this game got into my head to the point that I was looking in every corner of the map for a place to die! Needless to say I found this game AMAZING, with a keen humor that explores the classic clichés of the genre. And I want it more. And more.

I wish you the best for this jam and I absolutely cheer for you, I can't wait to play the complete version when it's ready!

Developer

I'm really happy you liked it! I wanted to add sooo many other things and secrets, but for the lack of time I had to focus on other things. But you've been really helpful to "test" which secrets to add to the game! XD
I tried to express my humor into the game dialogues, and it surprisingly worked! I'm glad to get this feedback on the comedic part of the game, making funny dialogues is never easy!

This game was a surprise to me, and I love it! So I'm gonna continue it and make it more awesome after the contest! ^_^

Genius.

I enjoyed every second of this game. The idea is clever and fun, and I can't wait to see how you'll intend to continue this game! The portrait are ok, I guess. The style can be improved, but they're fine as they are right now. Their faces are so expressive!

The only complaint is that it's rather short, but once finished, this is gonna be a masterpiece. Period.

Developer(+1)

What can I say to your comment... I'm really happy you enjoyed this game! I always wanted to realize a game where every moment can be enjoyed, and I tried to do it with humor!

Owari's portraits really helped with the game, and she really improves every drawing she makes! After seeing how nicely she colored the hero, I noticed the difference with the already drawn goddess. There will probably be a little redraw, but she surprises me every time! ^_^

Sadly I mismanaged my time, so I cut even more content than I thought. But now I have all the reasons to put them with the right time in a complete game!  I love this game too! <3

This is gold.

It's really funny despite being short, I really enjoyed playing it!

Maybe sometimes the dialogues are a bit long (I just want to see how I could die again! XD), but, well, I guess that's the point of all the game, so I really don't mind.

I really liked the puzzle, I wish there were more

Good job!

Thanks a lot!
I really thought about adding a skip dialogue system, but it wasn't essential for the demo, so I spent that time elsewhere.
(Well, it technically exists, but it's a bit clunky so only slimes are using that, for now XD)

Thanks a lot for the feedback! Comments like this really make my day! ^_^

This game like Cat Mario online.
hahahaha
i can't stop :D

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks a lot! ALMOST inspired by that, I got some inspiration from Mario Maker's troll levels. :D

Tried and finished the game. Even if it’s short, you put a serious amount of work for your entry and it really shows. I really hope others will like this game as well. The only thing I fear is this feels more like a Demo (not a bad thing) and making a complete game can be really a daunting task with all of this variables and texts, I hope you won’t run out of comedy ideas! I liked the humor, it’s not your average game, but more a parody of the tropes we can easily find in fantasy stories, RPG Games and RPG Maker Games. The death animation which really improves the overall game, the minimalism of interacting with the objects and puzzles and the music. It’s like a Adventure-Puzzle game with Visual Novel elements, the target is really narrowed, but I am sure a Skip Button other than the “gotta go fast (dialogue edition)” would be perfect for who just enjoy the other part of the game even if that means not enjoying the game fully. I wish you good luck for this game, for the contests and the next ones.

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Love your feedback! Yes, I loved this project too much, that I wanted to expand it over the jam version. So this might be considered a demo.
This game wouldn't happen, if it wasn't for my previous game experience in writing dialogues, writing stupid dialogues and... trolling. XD

For continuing the game I have various ideas in mind, and I find really fun writing new dialogues, so it shouldn't be a problem! ^_^

The skip button was delayed for lack of time (and clunky programming of it), but for the demo it's not a big deal, I hope.

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

Since the now demo is official, I confirm is not a big deal the button. It’s more clearly about the fact of reading is a part of the game!

Submitted(+1)

The dialogue system was really nice!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! The game is entirely focused on it, so I made the extra effort!

Submitted(+1)

Very fun and original game with cute characters and beautiful mechanics.

Developer

Thanks! I'm really happy you liked it! ^_^

This game is not for me, the banter gets a bit on my nerves a couple of times and it is pretty subjective comedy with 4th wall breaks that didn't really land for me emotionally.

The mechanics are interesting though. You kinda have to die to get hints and you need to solve the conundrum by trial and error in some aspects. And overall, its visually appealing, which helps a lot in its presentation.

Developer

I'm happy you still tried it! I tried making a game where dialogues never gets boring, since some other games I tried had this problem. Clearly the solution is not just comedy, which probably wouldn't impress everyone, but I really wanted to express every ounce of my humor in this game.

Just for feedback, what specifically did get on your nerves? The inability to play before reading a long scene maybe?

Submitted(+1)

Its mostly the whole protag being an asshole, having a bit of an ego, the meta elements felt like they were horned in. I'd argue the goddess can use it but the protag? His personality oozes chuunibyou syndrome. A bit of an unlikeable trait. The whole 4th wall breaking moments just loses my immersion. The reading is fine, I'm a bit patient but if I'm bored I tend to just speedread through the dialogue and just gleam a bit without understanding fully what you're trying to convey.

This series felt like Konosuba but without the 4th wall jokes being in your face. And the comedic timing is better in that show. Despite the differences, the comedic elements somewhat match to a degree.

Comedy is subjective though, this might not be for me. Someone else might like it more.

Developer

Thanks for your time and feedback! I wanted to know what to explain better in game page, so people understand better what to expect! ^_^
