Ambitious title. I found it challenging to figure out how to open a door. I was told to hit "E" to interact but then the same to stop interacting and it didn't do anything. I figured out you could click on the doorknob to open it but then the cursor went away and I couldn't click on anything anymore. Honestly I think you had a lot of really good in-world storytelling but it the whole experience had lots of little issues like this that made it hard to progress through. The in-world experience was charming PSX-like graphics which I would like to see more of in games.

Developer(+1)

I think you might of tried openong the key door shich gives you the mesaage you need to find a key! If you keep looking its somewhere 😊 Or its glitched πŸ˜…πŸ€£ maybe that haha

Thank you for playing and please give it another chance after I do a update patch haha

This game was one of the hardest for me to rate! I kind of love and hate it at the same time xD
Very provocative, but also unique, and, to my shame, way too engaging. I actually felt sad when the game stopped at the part where you enter the painting, because I wanted to see more.
I’m not sure if that was a bug - I just couldn’t move or interact with anything right after opening the entrance behind the painting. But I’d love to give it another try when I have time.
Also, I’m not a big fan of AI-generated images, but they really helped you create so much content in such a short time, which is honestly impressive. And the red lighting around interactable objects was a nice touch.
Thanks for sharing!

Developer

Thank you for playing 😊 Yeah divisive is deffinately most people's take away (or flat out hate 🀣).

The game does go past the portrait! Your missing some of the most gross stuff in the game xD Just when clicking through try to go slow, there is a bug I have not been able to hot fix yet when the menus close sometime 😢

Overall, I'm not sure how I feel about this entry. The gameplay was good, the exploration was nice, the mobs in the dungeon and how they were linked to the "hero" was a very nice touch but... well, as a lot of others said, it was just over the top in crass content that it veered into eye-rolling territory. If that were toned down a bit or had a bit more nuance/subtext, it would be awesome.

Developer

Thank you for playing! 😁 Crass and filth was the name of the game for this one for me so there was no plan for nuance and subtlety beyond making it fit in the SFW criteria. I knew this would be polarising but ive never really made anything this deranged so wanted to give it a shot! Game Jams are a wonderful place to try and experiment with different things haha! Anyway thanks again 😊

Submitted(+1)

Really fraked me the F out! I liked the Art style, and didn't mind that it was "crass" nice to have a unique experience.

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for playing, really appreciate the feed back 😊 Im on the same page I like to see jams that try something different (and like to try and do different stuff myself haha) .

Submitted(+1)

Ah, hard to rate that one, as it was a hair to crass for me, but that was the point I suppose. The music was a bit grating and the story a little bit too β€œstrange”. From a pure Dungeon Crawler perspective the movement was fast and controlled well. The battle system worked fine and was a bit funny to me, as we have a running joke at work, that you can get out of every situation, when you just shit yourself ;)

Developer

Yes, vile and crass on purpose haha! Wanted to see how far I could take it in the "sfw" limit for fun 🀣

That is a very interesting running joke for your work 🀣 Is there a interestingnstory to how it started? And thank you for playing and the review!

Submitted(+1)

You did warn me alright ...

It was ... something. I guess I enjoyed the ride? The game plays as fast as you press the buttons and the perspective is good, I thought it was mostly funny although I'm not proud of it, I didn't get all the ins and out but from trying to make sense of the few hints I could gather the player character might not be a totally respectable person.

The exploration and adventure game parts are fine, if anything I wish the turn-based combat was actually punishing.

Thanks for sharing!

Developer(+1)

Your not the only person that did not heed the three warnings 🀣

"Something" is a good way to describe it 🀣

I have never done a turn based/random encounters system before or a level/experience one for that matter and when the deadline loomed I decided just to try and make a simple system πŸ˜…

Thank you for playing 😊

I think the worst part of the game was the music :'''''( I don't know if it was on purpose (probably) to be so horrible but I ad to nearly cut the sound to be able to continue the game. Appart from the fact the images were AI generated and added to the weird look of the game, I really liked the way the interaction is implemented. However, the NSEW compass was just a fixed image (maybe on purpose), which really didn't help with how impossible it was to understand where you are (I found the sledgehammer by pure luck after nearly 5 minutes of running around).
Also, I've probably never pooped that much in my life ! :o

Developer(+1)

No no not horrible on purpose (I think it sounds rather good) but just short 30 second loops! I didn't ask Evilwizard to help out until a few days before the end and didn't want to kill him in such a short time frame so I asked for just shorter loops! (Prefer not to use ai in general if I can  get a person to do it but I cant do pixel art myself but music I knkw some really good people so csn avoid ai music at least!)

I do understand the 30 second loops can bring back childhood trauma of Haloween Town in Kongdom Hearts 1 though sorry 🀣

Compass i wanted to do more with but time constraints! I wanted to decorate the underground a bit better to help guide the player but Yeppoon..  my bad πŸ˜… There is actually a small lighting hue change though for each pathway. Blue hue to go from graves to exit and green from exit to knife and purple ( I think ..) from exit to sledgehammer.

Thank you so much for playing and I hope you never have to poop so much again 🀣

Submitted(+1)

By the music being horrible I only meant the fact it's such a short loop, I was fine the first 2-3 minutes but after that I nearly lost my mind >.<
I noticed the hue changes so I knew approximately where I was but then I didn't know which way to go so I kept looping around back to the ghost somehow :/

Developer

Ah okay cool I'll make the passages less of a pain then haha!

Submitted(+1)

This game sure is one of a kind! LOL. I thought it was really interesting how you made a very dislikable main character. You don't see that in games very much. I agree with WanderingTheDepths' comment about first person perspective, and how it would have been amazing to show more of the tile you are standing on. The crypt level in particular was very disorienting at times. I really liked the interaction mechanic with the doors, and environment as well. Overall solid submission, albeit a little gross. :P

Developer (1 edit)

So originally Darius is a DND character in a group I play with 🀣 He's pure evil and there to spice things up in weird ways haha! I think every game jam ive done my characters are always "good" so just wanted to try and have the polar opposite! I've followed wandering depths advice and started to fix up the camera perspective! (Thankfully it's 3D so not too hard to fix).

Thank you for playing even though it's gross! 🀣

Submitted(+1)

Fun game. Wayyy too vile/gross for me :), but considering that's the intent I'd say success on that part? Generally like the concept of the anti-hero discovering that the hero is a dickhead, but would have loved to see it more fleshed out. I'd loved it if you had teamed up with an artist instead of using generative AI though :). Combat was pretty basic, but overall impressive for a nine day jam!

Developer

Im glad you had fun and thank you for playing! 😁 Feel like being successful at being vile is the same at being successful for taking the biggest shit but that was the intention 🀣 I think i said in another comment I wanted more of showing Ich'ael is a prick with like notes and portraits around but time constraints (basically had a new baby born to take care of during this jam haha ). I dont actually know anyone that does pixel art and ai think I might of made them hate me with some of this needed art 🀣 But wish I could of found one! I did try to make the ai stuff a little original though, all the statues and portraits of ich'ael are actually based on photos of my cousin, the ghost is photos of me and the female statues (minis the angel) are generated from pics of one of my friends!

Anyway thanks so much again!

Yay, I made it.... kinda.

Had some issue when arriving at the last location, I could move around with the combat screen open. I completed the combat and it went away and I could complete the game after that.

Thanks for the sausage.

Developer

Thanks for playing 😊 Yeah ive heard that final encounter is a little glitched...I need to figure out whats happening πŸ˜…

Submitted

Final encounter worked fine for me, it was the first encounter in the cemetery area.

Developer

Oh when the ghost talks to you or a battle ?

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

A normal battle. Happened around the entrance next to the fountain I think, but I went into the grave area when I completed the combat and it was removed.

Developer(+1)

Thank you I'll take a look!

Submitted(+1)

interesting concept, and nice visuals during gameplay.  i was having some issues with using a controller but will revisit. music got a bit grating after a little while, would love to hear something a bit more dynamic

Developer

Thank you for playing! 😊 by controller you mean a actual game pad or something? I didnt even program that in I think πŸ˜…

I managed to beat it but I think it bugged out because I lost the last fight and then when I started to go back I was on the win screen. I just mashed attack on the combat screen as that seemed to be the most effective. I did try the third option at one point and was glad it didn't work at that time lol. The game itself has a good lo-fi 3d aesthetic to it that sort of reminds me of older play station games but the game itself grossed me out! I guess I should have heeded the warning on the front page.

Developer

Oh thank you ill sort that bug out later today with the ending triggering by accident!

Thank you for playing it! Hope you enjoyed it 🀣 But yes that content warning is deffinately not a understatement! Basically my goal was to make something vile but "SFW". So yay it grossed you out 🀣

Anyway thanks again!

It's tough to leave a comment with a game that is hard to like, but I also know that it's nice just to get any comment at all as feedback on something you put some work into, so I hope you can take this in the friendly constructive criticism spirit that it's intended.

I wanted to like this game but it turned out a little too crass and juvenile to be an enjoyable anti-hero/antagonist romp. I don't mind gross/weird ideas but I would prefer them to either be more clever or better motivated. I do think the puzzle type event in the second area is darkly clever but I don't think we needed the visuals in order to get the idea. I also like the "even demons think this guy is totally vile" bit.

I love the general idea of the story, which was what motivated me to play this. The idea of a gross anti-hero who slowly discovers that the local hero is actually a pretty horrible guy is a great idea. More fleshed out, you could have more of a setup like wandering around the tavern hearing people talk about how great he is, how he saved the village from something (which you later learn was a problem he caused), or later play with the idea of who would even believe this gross drunk about what he uncovered. But that's also just the realities of only 9 days of development time.

I like the artwork, and I like the lo-fi dungeon aesthetic with prerendered assets, it feels very much like a mid-90s game in that way. Same for the idea of colored keys and doors, a very old school dungeoning concept.

This is not a major criticism, but just something I always notice in first person RPGs, and wanted to note: it is good to give the player as much information as you can about where they're standing in the first person view. Meaning, if you can provide more info than "I'm facing a wall," like "I'm facing a wall and there's a corridor to my right and another wall to my left," that's usually preferable. The main way to do this is treat the view as if the character is standing at the back of their occupied tile rather than the center.

For combat: once you learn how to do it, it's way too easy, however for the type of game it is I did appreciate that it was able to be easily mastered to let the player reach the end without getting stuck. Too easy of a game is better than too hard! Also I never noticed the urine meter decreasing, which must've either been a not-fully-implemented mechanic or possibly broken in this build. If it was my game to design, I might do something like:

  • you can level up to increase max HP
  • even defending causes you to take minimal damage, so sometimes you might make the choice to power through and hope to kill before you take a lot of hits waiting for an opening
  • fountains recover HP but lower urine, so eventually you run out of healing
  • but you can find ancient dungeon booze to refill urine

But again, it's not my game, just something that I think would work with the existing design.

I thought it was a good length for the jam.

Oh, there was also an odd thing, when pressing escape it comes up with a menu referring to shooting and crouching and going into first person mode, must've been an engine remnant for another game or something.

I don't think it was terrible and it could totally be fleshed out into a more interesting and cohesive whole, with more time behind it!

Developer

"That does not mean it has to be mature".  I think this at the start summed up the game pretty well and is a good warning 🀣 And thank you for the nice warm up to start with but I went into this knowing this would be a vile divisive game! 😁 so you dont have to be so nice πŸ˜… For my game jams I always try to do something different or experiment in a different area or to try and learn something. I also never have done a main character that was such a lowly piece of trash so I just really wanted to push that. But also its a bit of a juggling act with what the character does.. if there isnt a juvenile side to it then it can get a little too serious or potentially close to home for some. So keeping it dumb was the plan!

So basically I have a two week newborn and my partner was in the hospital for seizures and coma for a week. That deffinately cut into my jam time but okay so a few points 🀣 (shes out now and recovering thankfully 😊)

  • The menu (i forgot thank you) is a generic one I have. I use Unreal 4 and have a generic build I made for jams that has a few quality of life stuff that I dont want to have to re do every jam (menus, music player, cutscene player etc)
  • Your suggestion for the pee meter is exactly what was planned but.. time
  • I actually was going to move the camera back to behind like you recommended but I didn't have enough time to tweak the graphics filters and such so left it as is!
  • I did actually want a exp system and more stats based combat! I've never done it before though and time (the typical culprit). The RND would of taken me too log and ... not too great with math πŸ˜…
  • I wanted to have portraits and scrolls of lore dump around the place to teach more about Ich'ael but.. you can guess what I will say...  But Darius Vol is a friend's character in our DND (yes hes juat as messed up in the dnd campaign)  so he already have his whole background to work with.

Anyway thanks for the big response even though you did not like the game. I really appreciate the feed back and I'll implement some of your suggestions for a post jam uodate 😊 ... the story is staying crass and juvenile though sorry 🀣

Submitted(+1)

Totally understandable. Good to hear that they're recovering!

I should've guessed the main guy was someone's RPG character, that's exactly the kind of shenanigans people get up to at the tabletop.
