Well this got a perfect score for me. Art and overall direction is efficient yet oozing with style. The mechanics are simple yet perilous and will get any table's adrenaline pumping. I just love this. I can't find a bad thing about it.

Developer

Wow thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

This adventure looks like it would be an icy blast to play in or run. I love the concept of a vertica hex crawl racing to reach the top before it's too late. Art work looks incredible with a solid style and vibe throughout. Excellent work.

Developer

Thank you so much for taking a look! Hope you get a chance to play it sometime!

Rad Racer 3-D glasses! Cool!   Lurandurael made me laugh and so did Lucky Lucy :D  Adds great character to the adventure. I love the Hex Climb tables! Great 8-bit art.  Succinct, easy to run, looks like a fun time!

haha I'm a sucker for obnoxious, complicated elf names! Thanks for checking out my project!!

Inspiration: Great use of the three games you drew.

Usability: This would be a snap to run, and I like that it's built for speed, like all good Shadowdark adventures should be.

Vibes: The NPC portraits are amazing. And the Stolen Veggies. That cucumber has so much personality! All of the art is great, really. Even the "pixelated" Shadowdark banners. So clever.

Thank you so much for checking it out! The veggies were my favorite art to make for this

A hex-climb? Inspired!  I really enjoyed this one.  My critique is mostly that there wasn't more.  I'll like to see this expanded to provide more ways for the players to engage with the adventure.  In addition, there seems to be a switch in focus from the antagonist being the sorceress to the Mountain King.  Is there a connection?  Lastly, I really appreciated that you internally linked the PDF.

Developer

Thank you so much for taking a look! I would love to expand it and if I did I'd give more focus on the sorceress and her dragon. The sorceress and mountain king are inspired by faxanadu, with a king sealing a blade in himself to prevent the bbeg from getting it, but in the process becoming their thrall.

This is excellent, vibes, the whole lot. Love the idea of the hex crawl up the ice slope to the monastery, and felt really useable at the table too.

CORPSE TALK LIVE DAY 1 Reviews

Since I didn't have time to enter this year, I can't do a traditional vote, but I can comment and take the time to go over some of the popular favorites and my own. Hope this helps as you go back for edits cause this 100% should be a game mode for Shadowdark!

  • Vibes: Immaculate
    • Great art & aesthetics. Clear love of 8-Bit vibe. Especially liked the creature art. Simple, but made with care.
    • Hex climb is a cool, fun idea. Great premise, especially considering the inspirations.
    • Intro text explaining the adventure is well-written and concise.
    • Story is simple, but classic, thematic, and right up my alley.
    • Feature, Encounter and Hazard tables are cool and thematic.
    • Monsters are very on-brand, drawn from inspiration. Mountain King abilities seem really fun.
    • Cool, bespoke items, many of which tie directly into the adventure itself. Nice.
  • Inspiration: Clearly shows through. Well and concisely explained. Not just window dressing, but built into the core of the adventure itself. Awesome!
  • Usability: Very good, but I did find myself wishing there was more meat to the adventure itself.
    • Appreciate that the recommended adventure level is called out right away (on the cover).
    • Stylish fonts are cool, but hurt readability (only a minor issue), as they're sparingly used.
    • Very functional (and aesthetically pleasing) layout. Helps a lot with readability.
    • Given that a lot of the "juice" in this adventure is decided by 2d6 random tables, I'd be a little concerned of seeing the same 2-3 features/encounters/hazards showing up multiple times per run.
    • I appreciate the creature stats being directly in the adventure AND that there are hyperlinks to the stats (and items)  in relevant areas. Nice!
    • Good use of back page with Frozen Treasure table. Many treasures have a real use in the adventure (not just fluff).
    • I haven't done the math, but it does seem a little unlikely that the PCs will encounter the Mountain King, or might encounter him in an awkward spot (like... right away). I would be tempted to have him start stalking the characters once they reached a certain point in the climb (I recognize this is probably personal preference). He just seems like too cool of a creature to not show up near the climax, especially for a one-shot.

Final Thoughts: While I did find myself wishing there was a bit more to it, this adventure is really great, especially when it comes to vibes and inspiration. Layout and art also really well done. Talk about understanding the assignment - you crushed this!

Developer

Thank you so much for such a thoughtful review and breakdown! I similarly had a concern early on if there would be too much reptition in the results. Between the heyed locations and if the players are focused on racing up to climb, they wont be exploring every single hex which lowers the probability of generating too many repeats...ideally! Though that does play into your point concerning encountering the mountain king... Perhaps I could expand the tables in the future to ensure that though. I really appreciate the insight! I will have to think on that and what ways to fix that. Thanks again!

As I've said before, this one was an insta I want to run this. So it doesn't get better than that.

Developer

Thank you so much! I really want to hear how it goes for people who decide to run it!!

This would be such a fun one shot All of the art is great and nails the vibe. I'm still cracking up at the stolen veggies

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I'm glad people enjoy the stolen veggies bit, with the Ice climbers pull I knew I had to include it.

not gonna lie: I judge a book by its cover - and this was an auto download. LOVED the parody art style. Just beautiful.

loved the 32 levels and the 3d glasses.

I love too how one can plop this mountain into any current campaign or frozen hex crawl.

I'm keeping this one in my files.

and I'm always a fan just a document of keyed hexes/rooms. nice and simple to run without prep

Thank you! The art was super fun to make, and I'm glad the ease of dropping it anywhere cold came through in the design.

I'm going to be honest, this is fucking awesome. The hex-climb is such a cool idea that I wish I had used for something sooner. The art and layout of this is just so so good, I'm especially fond of the Snow Stealth image for the Mountain King. Actually just the whole Mountain king in general, feeding into the story of their magical corruption, and the secret item/ way to beat them with the Swallowed Sword is just incredibly cool. This adventure not only looks great, but it feels real and lived in. Not even mentioning how cool and unique the frozen treasure is! Like a map carved on a bone, COME ON! THAT'S SICK! I'm super excited to run this for some friends, this adventure is something I would be really genuinely proud of if I made it, I'm taking notes, you did such a great job with this!

Developer(+1)

The whole corrupted king with a swallowed sword is a huge inspiration from Faxanadu, then the stalking bit came from the ice bear in ice climber! I'm glad you enjoyed it, and let me know if you end up running it I'd love to hear how it went. Thank you!

Nice and straightforward adventure. 8-bit graphics, perfect, the smiling mushroom makes me think he's a magic mushroom. I'm glad I didn't look at other submissions before uploading, because I see we had a similar idea for the title bar of things with the pixelated ends to be similar to the Shadowdark rules, though yours are much cleaner looking than mine.

Developer

Thank you! Making the pixel art was very fun

What a clutch interpretation of the prompts. This looks so pro.
