How does your game represent "Slick"?
Syncing platforming to music is the slickest thing anyone ever did try in a video game. Dash effect's movement, animated backgrounds, and carefully crafted levels make everything about this game slickkkkkk

Really fun blend of platforming and rhythm, nice job

I think the game has some potential that it may have had a hard time tapping into in the 10 days it had to be made, but with more time and polish, there's certainly something stronger here. I'd like to see where it can go!

i like this one! i love  the idea of rhythm game mashups, and i hope that whatever work you put in it takes it and expands to its full potential!

Submitted

I can see the vision on this one but I think it would probably need a bit more polish to make it shine.

I feel like the core gameplay could be really fun with a bit more tinkering. Would love to see where you take this one.

Developer

Thanks for playing! I'm excited for the full release, there's a lot of work to be done with this idea.  Lmk if you have particular ideas for how to polish or tinker with this game.

the rhythm-platforming blend works great, the music slaps, and when everything syncs up it feels super satisfying. seriously impressive scope.

Thats crazy to include a level editor in your game for a game jam, really impressive! Great music too, and fun to play :)

Super creative concept! Really enjoyed the tunes and the rythym mechanics. I did notice after I died the music fell slightly out of sync and I had to slash slightly early on every subsequent attack, but overall it was sweet! I suppose if I just get gud and don't die I don't have to worry about that c; I can't imagine how hard this was to code in such a small time, so huge kudos to you!

Developer(+1)

Glad you enjoyed!

Haha yeah that's a bug with the web version I ran out of time to fix, the javascript library doesn't like to seek quickly enough to the current music time.

Submitted(+1)

Oof, I had a similar issue with the cutscene I programmed having a web version exclusive glitch that I wasn't able to fix so I feel you!

Great use of sound and an interesting blend of genres! My only critique is that I think it would be better if there were fewer moments where you have to stand still to kill enemies. For me, the most fun parts were the ones where you had to move and simultaneously slash enemies in rhythm. When you stand still, the platforming aspect just doesn’t bring much to the table :/

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for the feedback! I agree that standing still is much less exciting, we had trouble balancing difficulty with the movement. I hope you got to the later levels, there's a ton of movement in them.
For the full release maybe we should consider auto-movement for the easier levels? Or more teleportation enemies?

Neat ideas in this game! I'm not much of a rhythm gamer, though, so I didn't get too far.

fun idea and like the character sprite. great idea here

This is right up my alley, I love rhythm games and mechanical difficulty and this game definitely has it! I was able to reach the end with mostly A+, I liked that the new mechanics were gradually introduced. Everytime a new mechanic came in I thought wow am I going to be able to handle that but it was always just easy enough to keep me from frustration. The only bit I didn't understand how to go about (and ended up tanking) was "love is an oasis" section on the penultimate level, it's a ton of teleport enemies but I didn't understand where to hit from to make it easiest
One thing I would say it that this seems like the kind of game that would have a marmite audience, personally I loved it, but I think the slickness requires the player to be mechanically good at these kind of games. If you wanted to work on it further, I think it could be improved by somehow allowing less skilled players to feel good too - but of course you don't want to detract from the experience in doing that
Nice work!

You.. reached the end!?? You're the first that I know of. Also A+ is pretty rad

Yep this game has a huge difficulty problem. I'm open to suggestions to make it easier besides including a bunch more easier levels. My dream is that the community starts making levels with the level editor.

I'm interested in continuing on to make a full release of this game.

Thanks for the detailed comments

It's one of my favourites I've played, I really like the depth you put into it! The level editor I gave a quick look at, I thought wow that's a crazy thing to include in a gamejam game, the scope creep must have been a LOT. Best of luck with future development!!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! The level editor paid off big time turns out, would recommend having starter code you can grab to whip up editors.

As a fan of rhythm games, this is definitely interesting and I enjoyed it quite a bit. does need a bit of polish tho, minor things like the player sliding slightly and the attack feeling slightly delayed. Great game and mechanics though.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for playing! Attacks happening on key release was a mistake. We should fix that! And make charge attacks a different button

Incredible look and soundtrack! What a fun little rhythm action game!

Very polished, great music and great sprite work. Unfortunately I'm not great at rhythm games so I wasn't able to make it very far.

Dude!! You gotta release the soundtrack to this game.  Very cool idea and I noticed no latency issues as you stated.

Jared, the composer for this game, will release it on youtube soon!

Really slick graphics and very well synced!

Very fun game, like the amount of enemies and mechanics for it.  Visually very appealing and slick looking game.

Wow very slick. Cool to add an editor in. I noticed no audio delay 👌

The interactive tutorial was very nice

This game is sick! I like the concept. The moments where you're moving quickly and fluidly feel really great! I think the art and music are really cool.

I think for a rhythm game the attacks probably should happen on key press instead of key release.

Cool game, well done!

Developer

Thanks! Yeah we debated on key release vs press, but key release supports charge attacks from tutorial 3!

The blend of platformer and rhythm game is an interesting idea. Nice job
