Very nice game! although would be better if some keyboard shortcuts were added for the size button, and just an idea, that rip button could add a sort of checkpoint that takes you back there, but only once and with a limited amount of checkpoints, I feel like it would work nicely with the content in this game.

Fine game, nice entry

Good work this was a nice little platformer to play! I really liked the art style and the music and atmosphere was perfect. I think that some indicator for the devil cow in game that you are supposed to dodge the balls would have been helpful because I got stuck for a bit before I read your description that he just wanted to play dodgeball. I also think the ui felt a bit crowded at times, especially in fullscreen, or if I was near the top of the screen. Well done though I really enjoyed this submission!

Really interesting game, and quite fun to play too. I really like the level design, as it makes it very easy to learn the game. However, there are a few things I would change if you were to take the game further:

  • It can get kind of confusing what is and isn't interactable. I would recommend replacing black and white with dark and light grey respectively for the non-interactable objects
  • I'm not too sure about the player's jump. It feels way too floaty due to the long hang time and the levels haven't been designed to leverage that in a way that improves the game. I would recommend watching this video to learn how to improve your jump
  • The music doesn't really fit the visuals of the game. The artwork is very minimalistic whilst the music is very polyphonic, and has way to many different timbres to suit your game. (My general rule of thumb for texture of pixel art game music is that the music shouldn't have more staves than the amount of colours in your colour pallet). If you were to continue the game, I would advise you to choose some different music (I wouldn't mind creating something for this)
  • Sound effects would help the game feel way more polished. You can use websites like Open Game Art for free sound effects for your game
  • Also, I would switch from your CapsuleCollider2D to a BoxCollider2D for your player hitbox. It doesn't feel good being able to slip of corners

Thanks so much for your long review. I really appreciate you taking the time to give me some good critique!!!

It's a decent platforming game, but what's the purpose of those flowers? There don't seem to be any interactive options.

Developer

Thanks for the review. And the flowers are just there for decoration.

I love the game, though I do feel that the UI is really crowded, with too many big UI elements on screen at once. Also, I'm not a big fan of the 'going small' mechanic being a UI button. Oh, and also, I honestly suggest you add some sounds when you pick up stuff, kinda stale when the only audio playing is the music. Nor do I like the fact that there are some parts in the game where the player goes off-screen, and you have to guess where he'll end up.

Developer(+1)

Yeah, the whole UI issue is on me. UI has always been something I fall back on when it comes to introducing game functionality, which is a habit I need to break. The shifting button definitely could’ve just been mapped to the spacebar, and the restart button probably didn’t need to be there at all as it was only a debug command for me to fix a bug i fixed before releasing the game.

As for the lack of SFX and the parts where the player goes off-screen, those were actually intentional design choices meant to set the game’s atmosphere. I mentioned it in the description, but it’s easy to miss. I wanted the world to feel a bit eerie and isolated: where the only sounds are ambient noises and music. Adding pickup sounds felt like it would pull the player out of that mood.

The off-screen parts work the same way. It’s a subtle psychological effect. It makes the world feel uncertain and eerie. It also (accidentally) added a touch of difficulty to those jumps, not that much just a little, which I ended up liking.

Nice little platformer! Really like the visuals + eerie atmosphere of the game. Sort of reminds me of those secret areas in FNAF world. If I was to give some feedback I would say that you should definitely add variable jump heights - Essentially when you release the jump button, if you’re still moving upwards in the air it should half your y velocity. Would make the game much easier IMO. But other than that great game + visuals!

Developer

Thank you so much for your feedback and review. This is actually the first platformer I have ever made so I wasnt aware of things like variable jump heigh and coyote frames so I didnt have them in my game but they will definitely be in the next platformer I make. Thanks again!

Nice game, i like the mechanic. I died on boss. Is it possible to pass there

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for your review. And yeah it is a bit difficult to pass the final boss but its possible. You need to be Big and dodge 3 of his ball attacks. Then he will fly up for a few seconds where you can turn small and run under him. There is also a way to completely skip the boss fight entirely. Its a little easter egg that no one has yet to find so I wonder if ya can. :)

Nice music, very atmospheric. pretty fun!

Thank you so much for your review!

You have a good aesthetic going for it and I always enjoy a decent platformer :)

Developer

Thanks so much for your review. I really appreciate your kind words :)

The style, atmosphere, and gameplay fit perfectly together. I´d just adjust the platform jumping a tiny bit to make it smoother when jumping from the edges. But i loved playing it, awesome work!

Developer

Thank you so much for your review, I appreciate it greatly!

I like the unique mechanics and the overall art style lining up with the theme really nicely! I think the movement feels a little floaty but no major critiques, really good job!

Developer (1 edit)

TYSM for your review. I am always happy to hear that my artwork is liked.

Submitted(+1)

I like the art style. Nice animations too. But it's a bit tedious to start always at the beginning. Maybe some respawn points would help?

Developer(+1)

I felt like the game was too short though to justify having respawn points. Its about a minute of gameplay, maybe less, if you do everything right. I do really appreciate that you liked the art and animations. :)

You really sold me on the atmosphere and minimalism for the game, the issues with platforming has already been mentioned so I’m not gonna repeat them. Overall great use of the theme!

Developer

TYSM for your review. Im glad to see that you enjoyed my game.

Really loved the aesthetics of this one, it had an interesting mechanic and the platforming in general felt really solid. As I mentioned on stream, I would make switching between small and big an actual keyboard button (and controller button if you add controller support later) - having to click something on stream felt immersion breaking and interrupted the flow of the gameplay.

Overall really great job though!

Developer(+1)

TYSM for playing my game on stream. And yeah i agree that i totally could have made shifting just be the spacebar. And the reset level button 100% could have been removed. Both cleaning up the UI. I only had the reset level button there because a game breaking bug occurred right before i uploaded the game that caused the player the stick into the ground and get stuck so i added the button so the player could reset the level and get unstuck but i fixed that bug before posting the game but never removed the button. My bad. I've also never played with controller so that didnt even cross my mind to add support for it but i will definitely look into it for the next game i make. But once again, thank you so much for playing my game and giving me good feedback on it! :>

That’s what I like jams for—finding something original and unexpected, even if it’s just one small feature. In this case the shrinking mechanic is such a feature, but it makes the whole game unique. Great style, and the dedication to the theme is appreciated.

Developer

TYSM for your kind words about my game. I honestly didn't even really think that much of the shrinking mechanic when i was making it but everyone loves it and i guess i can understand why... the little stick figure is pretty cute

Submitted(+1)

That shrinking mechanic felt unique! Nice job —the game looked good with its minimalist drawn graphics.

Developer

Thank you so much for your review, I appreciate it greatly!

Cool entry! I enjoyied shrinking mechanic :)

I loved the music and art sytle, it gives the game that unique vibes. Some of the comments below already pointed to things like the coyote jump, but overall is a really nice work.

Developer(+1)

Tysm. I love hearing that my artwork is like. The music, while not mine, is nice and really sells the atmosphere. It is actually two tracks that i stacked on top of eachother. One is the drums and the other is the ambient noises.

Submitted(+1)

Wow I love ur game so much its seem simple yet has such a cool gameplay

Developer

Thank you so much for your review. Im so glad you enjoyed the overall vibe i was going for. I was worried people would be put off on the simplicity of it.
