The outside environment looks great. It reminds me of another game (Sugar Rush) in this jam. I think this is too difficult for me. I wish that you use the E key (which is closer to WASD) to toggle the flashlight, and some other key for interact. Good job on your entry.

Developer

Thankyou! can you leave a link to sugar rush? I want to try that as well.

I think my favorite part of this was honestly the main menu. That was pretty neat. I love the use of the free assets, they really fit the fill of your game. The monster seems to be an illusion, though I might be wrong. I never encountered it either visually or physically. It seems to just be a flashlight countdown. My only real complaint is the monster scream. If it didn't happen every 5 seconds, it wouldn't be an issue, but began to grind after a little while. Really enjoyed the game though, well done!

Developer

The monster is an invisible 3d object just to raise the tension when the running footsteps get closer. Yeah I agree the audio system I went for turned out to be quite buggy in the end, I had repeating sounds, improper audio switching and was left with no time to fix it. The main menu is also my favorite part of the game. Also the scream only happens if the monster detects your light and starts chasing you. Thankyou for the feedback, it is very helpful.

It took two almost instantanious deaths to get that I have to turn it off regularly. After that I beat it, but only 6 candies. Not sure if that is "good", maybe I got lucky and found the key soon. Nice game

Developer(+1)

yeah that's a pretty good score, you took half the amount of candies from the maze plus the whole mountain of em behind the locked door. Thanks for playing the game!

Cool game, but I noticed that you can just turn off your flashlight without any consequences and beat the game easily. Didn't care for the fading flashlight either. Feel like there could've been more done with this, but cool idea nonetheless.

Developer

Thankyou for your kind words. This is a bug, the sanity was supposed to kill the player if it reached zero. But this bug was introduced in the latest build so didn't get time to fix it. Also I have one question, were you able to see anything inside the maze without the flashlight

Submitted(+1)

I managed to finished the game first try (without crapping my pants) it was quite tense I must say! juggling between managing my sanity meter and being able to use my flashlight for navigation is a genius idea. I had a good time with this, easy recommend!

It could have been better with more time but glad you enjoyed the experience. Thankyou for playing the game!

The aesthetics for the street and music are good for this game. Unfortunately I can't see anything when I get inside the house other than the HUD. I saw the indicator that the brain thing (sanity I assume?) is going down, but there isn't any feedback audio/visual to understand why.

Developer

Thankyou for the feedback. So you are trapped in the haunted maze and have to find a way out. You are equipped with a flashlight but then there is the jam mechanic twist where the flashlight becomes your enemy. You have to use it to navigate around the maze but keep it on for too long and the monster starts hunting.

Very atmospheric. Great use of the free assets.

Thankyou very much. The feedback is appreciated!

cool game
(spoilers bellow, hopefully no one reading reviews before playing the game)
I got 7 candies, keys and to the, laundry room? cool antijumpscare
it seems if sanity meter depleted nothing happens
and thats was kinda good because time between sanity feeling and monster coming was kinda anoying
TBH i did not like flashlight fading instead of turning off imideatly kinda added to the monster being a nusance
i really wanted a minimap, i do not even know how much of the maze i explored, its a miracle i found door
or mazes changes around the player, now that would be sneaky and call, kinda felt it happening at some point
although i have a lot of mixed emotions overall this was awesome.

Developer (1 edit)

The laundry room was supposed to be the candy room but it was a last minute change so the textures got messed up. Btw awesome find on the sanity bug. The intentional design was to kill the player if sanity reaches zero but it is not happening. And no the maze does not change it is just designed like that so that it is confusing.
Thankyou for the feedback and thankyou for playing the game :)

The main menu is a great introduction to the game's mechanics. Nice idea, well executed.  The house assets look great. Not really my sort of game. But I appreciate what you've started to put together here. nice work.

Developer

Thankyou so much for playing the game

Good idea! But man, it is really is pitch black lol. Great work on the trick twist, since that light is really desperately needed.
I did keep it on to see if I can spot a monster, but no luck!

Developer

Thankyou, the feedback is appreciated. Also the monster is invisible that's why you couldn't find it :)

Promising start. Loved the main menu. Really, really cool with the Raycasting flashlight to select things. It REALLY set the mood. I also loved the village. Were those KayKit assets from another pack or from somewhere else? I'm always looking for village and house assets. I'd love a link. The footsetpes were a nice touch.

When trying to open the house the screen was completely black in every direction and I didn't realize at first I needed to move forward myself. Once I was in the house, I died quickly. I had to refresh the page to play again, and then I had to go through the intro again. Continue didn't bump me ahead.

I think the difficulty level was just too hard for me. After dying the second time and not really knowning what was going on I quit.

Hey, thanks for playing the game. I glad you liked it (for the most part) yeah we didn't have time to fully flush out the game.

the house assets were created by me btw

Killer job on the assets! You should consider putting them up here on itch.
