I definitely didn't expect to see a platformer in this jam but I am pleasantly surprised! The controls feel surprisingly smooth and the actions are balanced well with your speed, it's a little unforgiving but I can always appreciate a challenge. All in all, great work!

Developer

Thanks for playing and taking on the challenge!

Great little game, you are a cruel cruel person and I love it.  Definitely gets a little tedious when the timed sections are preceded by hack'n'slash bits with little challenge but I see you've already addressed that.  I loved the way the gfx progressively get glitchier and the virus chase was really well done.

Developer

Thanks for playing! I’m glad you noticed how the environment gets more glitchy as the levels progress.

Wow! Really enjoy this one! It reminds me of Hollow Knight in terms of difficulty, and the enemies reminds me of Maplestory. Really great submission! It takes me multiple tries per level to pass, but I really enjoy it. Add some music into the game and it would be golden!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and taking on the challenge! And yes, I agree about adding music, that’s definitely something I’d like to learn more about and explore in future projects. If you managed to reach the boss, you might notice it has some resemblance to the Fourth Chorus from Silksong.

Great game. prefect mix of dark and comedy :)

Lots of cool ideas incorporated into the game. The controls are responsive and it feels good to play. It's a shame that the game is so unforgiving. A challenge is great, but fighting your way through enemies without any challenge for another attempt is not (Level 3).

Developer

Thanks for playing! Sorry about the difficulty. I’m the type of player who enjoys punishing and challenging games like Dark Souls, Hollow Knight, and even some old-school NES titles, so it can be a bit tricky for me to gauge everyone’s difficulty preference. But I really appreciate you letting me know, I’ll consider adding checkpoints after the game jam ends and make some adjustments to ensure a fair challenge.

I think my comment sounds a little harsher than I intended. What I meant was that you have a lot of great ideas in the game, and I just think it's a shame that many players will probably drop out before they get to see much of it. I'd be surprised if more than 30% have even seen Roachmax. If you're going to use Hollow Knight as a comparison, when you look at the chase sequences in Silksong, if you make a mistake, you don't start right at the beginning, you lose a heart and respawn at a nearby point. This makes it much easier for players to learn from their mistakes and it doesn't feel quite as frustrating.

Oh, your comment isn’t harsh at all, don’t worry! In fact, it’s completely valid, and I really appreciate you taking the time to play the game. It is a bit of a unfortunate that some players may have quit before reaching the full content. The game is definitely beatable with a bit of effort, and at the very least, it doesn’t have any game-breaking bugs.

I was aware of the checkpoint issue, but I ran out of time right after I finished designing and adding the sound effects. Checkpoints were also one of the lowest priorities on my list because I was worried they could introduce bugs, so I decided to play it safe and focus on completing the core game first.

About Hollow Knight or Silksong, I didn’t mean them specifically. I was referring more to games known for their punishing difficulty, like classic NES titles such as Castlevania or Ninja Gaiden, where failure can mean restarting the level at best and the entire game at worst.

For Level 3, before I received the first round of feedback, I honestly didn’t expect it to be as unforgiving as what other reviews suggested (as I was the only playtester).

For Hollow Knight, Silksong, or any Souls-like game, the respawn system is essential because Metroidvania-type games rely heavily on backtracking and have large interconnected maps. Without frequent respawn points, the pacing would completely break since players need to revisit previous areas to progress. I just meant that their overall difficulty can still drive some players away, since the checkpoints are quite far apart and sometimes easy to miss without a guide, not necessarily in the chase sequences themselves.

Just to clarify, I don’t mean any of this in a negative way. Constructive criticism is always valid, and I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts. Writing in text can sometimes make the tone easy to misunderstand, so I just wanted to share a piece of my mind. Once again, thanks for playing all the way through!

Great job! I love a good decaying game world setting. I really liked the way you did the beholder eye turn red and body fades away effect. Very nice touch. I gave up at the 50% glitch area because there was too much time between the checkpoints.

Developer

Thanks for playing! I totally understand where you’re coming from. I really appreciate the feedback, it helps me see how different players experience difficulty. I’ll consider adding checkpoints after the game jam ends.

Feel free to check out full gameplay, so you don't miss out on anything, thanks again!

The idea is pretty cool, and the art is great! Platformers are pretty fun. It would be a lot more fun if you added things like input buffering, coyote time, and checkpoints. You did a great job!

Developer

Thanks for playing and suggestions! I will look into these implementations.

Amazing work and design.  The game is so smooth and enjoyable

Nice game! I liked the cyber twist of the fake reality where you are trapped.
My suggestions would be to be very careful on fine-tuning as a level has to remain difficult but not frustrating. Furthermore, an input buffer (for a jam is an overkill, but it really does help) would be so great!
Anyway, really good job (also considering you are a solo dev!!), I really felt the pressure to reach the end of the level!

Developer

Thanks for playing all the way and useful suggestions! I will consider looking into these implementations.

I really liked this! I have always been a sucker for platformers. The horror implementation also felt very unique.

Developer

Thanks for trying it out, glad you liked it!

wow, It's really tough.

I finished level2, and level3 is too hard for me.

more checkpoint maybe can help me go further~

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for playing, I will consider adding checkpoint after the jam is over.

It's a cool concept and the part with the giant virus in the background was great, but the normal enemies end feeling like a chore.

It's still pretty damn good for a first solo project, keep it up!

Developer

Thanks for playing and kind comments!

I like how progressively it's getting more and more complex and yet still is very nicely paced. Well planed levels and interesting tempo changes with "glichtinetss":)

Developer

Thanks for playing! I’m really glad you noticed how the levels evolve as you go, that progression was fun to design.

Submitted(+1)

You exceeded my expectations! At first, I thought the game would be too “simple,” but it brought me more pleasure than many “complex” games! Well done!

Developer

Thanks for playing! I’m glad you were able to explore more of the game’s content.

I love me some good eldritch virus entities!

This jam has taught me that platforming is not my forte but the controls were really smooth! I wish there were checkpoints, just so we wouldn’t have to restart every level from the beginning but I liked the sound design and gameplay!

The art was quite charming too. Simple but carries the point forward. Nice work!

Developer

Thank you so much for playing and taking on the challenge, even if platforming isn’t your forte! I’m really glad you noticed the intention behind the simple art style. I’ll definitely look into adding checkpoints at the right moments after the jam and make a few tweaks to keep the difficulty challenging but fair for all players.

Submitted(+1)

Interesting jam submission, would say for sure that it's pretty good for your first solo jam! The platforming controls are very tight and responsive, which is a pretty important thing to get right for a platformer. While the art style was crude, I think your story premise does a good job of alleviating some of the issues due to the fact that we literally are in a digital world. However, being a little critical for a moment, I would say that the third level's difficulty spike feels a bit unfair and would've likely benefited from a checkpoint system of some kind. The falling rock segment especially felt incredibly punishing, and the runback to retry it is pretty harsh. I would say that having a checkpoint be stationed right before the falling rock segment would be perfect, especially since the challenge that is provided with that part of the level is fully based around platforming and movement. I did like the virus design and monsters, once the level started getting glitchy overall. Pretty good game submission, and Great Game!

Developer

Thank you so much for playing and for leaving such a thoughtful review! I really appreciate the detailed feedback. I’ll definitely take your points about the difficulty spike and checkpoint placement into consideration to make the challenge feel fairer and more balanced. Glad you enjoyed the virus and glitchy visuals too!

Rated High For Me Because The Platforming Controls Felt Very Responsive And Fluid. The Deterioration Of The Artstyle Was A Nice Touch, And The Boss Fight (From Your Youtube Video) Seemed Extremely Well Thought-Out. Solid Work For A Solo Project.

Developer

Thanks so much! I really appreciate that. I put a lot of effort into making the controls feel tight and responsive, so I’m glad that stood out. The visual decay and boss fight were some of my favorite, and most time-consuming, parts of the design, so it means a lot that you noticed!

Felt like a solid framework for a good platfomer. It was a bit lacking in the graphics and music department, although I can totally get why since you mentioned being a solo developer.

Some chase sequences, like the medusa one that mix horror with gameplay tension could really shine if given a proper chance with better music and graphics.

I only managed to get to the third level (although I definitively would've gotten farther if there were proper controller support, I'm not too used on playing platformers on keyboard) because the rock falling section required inputs a little too precise.

I did manage to get past it twice, one time I fell into a pit right after, but the second time I got past it something funny happened: a rock still managed to crawl and fall down the ending of that section, so I just got hit by a boulder from off screen. Tried to record it but screen capture wasn't on. Was funny.

As for the rest of the game, with the enemies being essentially sitting ducks (up until the point I reached, anyway) I felt it would've made the combat more dynamic if the dash also dealt damage, or the base attack had longer reach.

That aside, nice game

Developer

Thanks so much for the thoughtful and honest feedback. Music and sound design are definitely my weaker areas, so there were some limits given the time. As for control flexibility, I’ll consider adding key customization and controller support in the future.

You’re also right about the difficulty in later levels, the game is meant to be challenging and sometimes punishing, but in exchange players get more flexibility and control. I’ll keep your notes in mind when balancing future updates or projects.

WIth that being said, feel free to check out my gameplay video here in case you miss out the full context:

Wow I love the variety of enemies and the movement. The movement felt quite good considering the time constraints. I think this game could be something pretty special with some improvements to combat but overall very cool jam submission. Good work!

Developer

Thanks so much! I really appreciate it. I’m glad you enjoyed the movement and enemy variety, I definitely plan to refine the combat more after the jam. Thanks again for playing!
