Surprisingly intense experience for such a cutsey look! Also - genuinely impressive for the first game jam game. You have a good sense of style and do basic game design things right. Great work!

Great work and congrats for making something (especially for a jam!) not using an engine. I totally agree with the sentiment about engines getting in your way, especially if it's not your day job. If you want to change your focus from the coding to the other aspects of gamedev, especially if you want to expand the scope of your project (jam or otherwise) I do hope you give an engine a try though!

Surprisingly gruesome sound effects. Pretty good top-down endless runner, and the jumping was handled nicely. Got to 25 candies after playing it a bit.

realy nice game the only critism i have is that the player can get too fast and be on the endge of the screen so he doesnt see any pumking infront of him but exept that realy nice game i like the vibe of it good job

Cool entry! Trick or Terror nails the retro/TV-static aesthetic and the frantic runner energy. I ran into a moment where jumping would sometimes feel unresponsive, especially when a monster was close — it made a few deaths feel more frustrating than fair. You might try increasing input sensitivity or giving a small forgiveness window on jump timing. Also, the white dot for jawbreaker attacks caught me off guard — maybe make it more visible or scale it up a bit so players notice it faster.

If you’ve got a moment, I’d love it if you checked out my game and dropped a rating: https://itch.io/jam/gamedevtv-halloween-jam-2025/rate/3971977

— thanks so much and best of luck in the jam! 🎃

Effective use of the gamejam's TV theme!  The game itself blended very well into the TV graphic, and it was an integral part of the game, more than just a frame around the graphics.  The music selection fit in perfectly with the game's stages, and it was neither overbearing nor too subtle.  The game mechanics were okay, but maybe could use a bit more fine-tuning in my opinion; maybe they could somehow be a little more responsive to user input than what they currently are.  Good job!

No game engine? Wow, very impressive. Great job!

A few thoughts and bits of feedback:

  • At first I didn’t know why you need the jump mechanic, but it really helps in avoiding the mobs. Though there are times where I jumped right into the mob rather than over them.
  • I thought I was supposed to collect the pumpkins too in my first run.
  • Not sure how to kill monsters with the jaw breaker, then saw the white dot. Maybe make it bigger? It wasn’t obvious at first.
  • It might help to make the game a little easier at the start and gradually ramp up the difficulty.
  • I found myself more concerned with avoiding monsters than collecting candy during the run.
  • Does the game end or does it go on forever?

Good job without engine! Just browsed your code a little, even the crt-effect (which I couldn't make in time). I think the horizontal movement should be a bit faster, currently it is hard to switch sides before you run further than the collectibles. Nice game :)

Hey pretty impressive for no game engine, and I like the retro look!  I thought it was kind of too difficult to control, though.  After a few tries, my high score was 3.  😆

That is exactly how my nightmares of being chased by a zombie horde go if I dreamed in 8-bit. It was a very creative runner. Really nice aesthetic.

The scream at the end hurt my ears and I was using speakers.

Well done.

The high pitched screaming added a proper horror feel to it :), combined with the TV screen look, it made for a interesting designed game.

I'd have loved a bit more speed on the character :D, but I imagine keeping it slower made for part of the drama you was going for.

Nice job! :)

Very addictive and stylish game, I really enjoyed it — it plays great, the atmosphere is immersive, and it’s a wonderful runner!

you really nailed the theme - well done!

What a fun and spooky infinite runner! I'm amazed that you did this all in TS and CF workers. The screams did distract me a bit, but overall very cool concept.

Very cool game, nice gameloop and replayability. One thing about the screams. They were too loud, not much scary, rather annoying after a while.

Yeah I over did it a bit there. I wish I would have just added it at the end when you die and have another damage sound.

Remarkable you've made this with TypeScript! I teach people Web Development and have never even attempted game dev with it, except for one time dabbling with Phaser and JS. What framework did you use?

Anyways, I love the tv view and the screams were so hilarious I was laughing out loud haha, love it. Nice job!

No engine. Just Typescript and the Canvas API.  I build cloud infra in TS and Go for my day job and every time I get in an engine it kinda gets in my way.  Its probably just because I haven't taken the time to learn it tho.

Crazy what you can do with so little.  Glad you enjoyed it!

Very cool atmosphere and attention to the effects you're creating. It's nice to see a simple concept re-imagined and executed so well. Its got a perfect horror/halloween vibe. Great work.

I think the timing of the sfx was right on.  And the death scene with the TV jumping to static felt cool.

I really like the game, but I just did 10 points haha Nice visual, congratulations!
